best/worst read in January

Hope everyone's reading year got off to a great start! What was your favorite and least favorite book this month and why?

Best: Mary Poppins by PJ Travers. It was just fun and quick to read.

Worst: The First Phone Call From Heaven by Mitch Alboim. I've been a huge fan of this author and this was disappointing. Not his best work by far

Re: best/worst read in January

  • I don't have a best and worst. The only book I finished was A Nomadic Witch by Debora Geary (4*). I'm about 3/4 of the way through Washington: A Life, and it will be a solid 4 stars as well when I finally finish.

  • Best:  The Golem & the Jinni by Helene Wecker.  I loved every little thing about this book...the characters, the setting, the details...all the moments.  It was just fabulous.

Worst:  Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris.  I guess I just didn't connect with the author's brand of funny.

Worst: The Visibles by Sara Shepard. I really wanted to like this book, but the story fell flat.

Worst at 1 star:  Both are romances that I just didn't appreciate.

Yes! I didn't want to finish but I had just had another dnf and so I struggled through.

It took me a while to get into it.  TBH, if I hadn't been reading it for book club, I probably would have quit.  I'm really glad I finished it.
  • Best: David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell
Worst: Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson - I liked some things about it- the prologue really sucked me in, for example- but it just wasn't a super stand-out for me. I never got very emotionally invested in the characters, so I wouldn't rush out to read another book in this series.

  • Best: In the Devil's Snare: The Salem Witchcraft Crisis of 1692.  Very well researched and interesting read despite the incredibly academic writing.

Worst: Between You and Me.  No more books from the ladies who wrote The Nanny Diaries.  Blech!

  • Best?    _World After_ by Susan Ee (Penryn and the End of Days #2)   - the first one in the series was good... this second one?  Awesome, IMO.

Worst?   _The Redemption of Callie and Kayden_  by Jessica Sorensen  - the first one of these two was good! The second?  Bleah.

I'm struggling to finish this one. It kills me because I usually LOVE Sanderson's writing, and there's nothing inherently bad about this book, but I.just.don't.care. about the characters. =/
