UPDATE: Opinions Needed - Wedding Wear

I also posted this on my wedding month board, but I'd also love to hear the opinions of the great ladies of GP!

Ok, so we are going to an evening wedding next Sunday at this place.  I've got these three dresses to pick from.  Which one should I go with?  Keep in mind, these are all longer on me and hit me either right at the knee or are calf length.

Option 1: Red Dress.  I'd pear it with a thin gold belt and black heels with gold buckle.
Option 2: Black and "Cream" dress.  It's actually more of a blush pink, and not cream.
Option 3: Silver foil dress.  I'm thinking either silver, purple or gunmetal heels.

  • I like the red one best. But I'm not fashionable at all so take my opinion with a grain of salt ;-)
  • I was always told to not wear red to a wedding (my mom and grandmother said red at a wedding means you are slutty). Even without that, I still like 2 the best!

  • My vote goes to 3.  I think the red one is a little flashy for a wedding and the middle one, while really cute, just doesn't scream wedding to me.

  • That looks like a very elegant venue. With that in mind, I'd go with #2. The silver one just seems to..."party girl" for a place like that.

  • To be very honest, I don't think any of them are appropriate for the venue. Especially since it is in the evening, I would think something a bit more elegant or "fancy". That being said, I actually think all 3 are very pretty and would look great on you so take my advice with a grain of salt!!

I agree. Although, my main issue with most dresses these days is the length. Maybe I'm just old, but 2 and 3 are far too short for me. And, 1 looks too much like a bridesmaid dress.

If I had to choose one, I would choose 3. It's cute; it just needs more length :)

    image
  • I love 2 and 3, but 2 seems a bit more "daytime" to me. I agree with Lucky that 3 is a little more "party girl" but I think it all depends on the style of the wedding.  My wedding was on a Saturday night at a venue that is considered "elegant," but that silver dress would have fit perfectly with our feel and decor.
    imageimage
  • Thanks for all the input ladies.

I'm only 5'0" so all of these dresses are MUCH longer on me :)  I love the red one the best as far as fit goes because the other two will need alterations, especially #3.  I am a little worried about wearing red to a wedding, but from what I've read on etiquette boards, the only color that's mentioned not to wear is black, which people do all the time.  The groom is one of H's friends that I've only met once and I've never met the bride, so I don't know if they'd be offended or not.

Ugh, I really hate picking out outfits for weddings!  Especially when I don't know the couple :( FWP.

  • As long as black isn't the color of the bridesmaids dresses, I see no problem in wearing black.  In any event, whatever you choose you will look amazing!

I really like the red one and the black lace and pink dress. I had a black lace/pink dress I wore to a wedding with pretty jewelry and nude/pink pumps, and I got tons of compliments. If its long enough it will look elegant when all dolled up, hair makeup etc. The 3rd one, isn't really my style, looks like a party dress to me too. Whatever you choose, you'll rock the dress girl, so go with what feels best. :) xo Oh ya girls, this is Cloudy, the same one..

  • Ok, so unfortunately 3 is being returned.  I thought it would only need a simple side seam take in, but it's going to require a lot more in alterations which I don't want to do.

I think I'm also going to pass on the red one.  I asked the wife of the best man and she advised against it.  I also see what some of you are saying about the black and blush one.  It's borderline Sunday Brunch wedding vs and evening wedding.  I'm sure I can dress it up with nice heels, updo, and accessories though, if it came down to it.

Since I am returning the silver one, I found this one I can exchange it for. What do y'all think of it?

  • You could probably get away with the second one, but I agree with others that a long dress would be more appropriate for the venue and it being an evening wedding.

Are there any at the store you will be returning #3 to that are royal blue or a deep purple and floor length?

  • I think the new one is really pretty, but the floral pattern kinda says "upscale Sunday brunch in the summer" to me. I think with the right make-up, accessories, and shoes #2 could definitely work for an evening wedding.

From the invitation, I think their colors are going to be a deep blue, so I think I should stay away from that color family.

Ok, so how about this one then?  I feel like this style is more on the verge of bridesmaid though...

I like that one.  I could see how it would be a little bridesmaid-ish, but only because you mentioned it; it wasn't my first thought. Hopefully the BMs don't wear anything even remotely close lol.
