NBR: Who's at work?

Re: NBR: Who's at work?

  • Oh, and I used to say I wanted snow days...until I realized schools have to make them up at the end of the year. No way.
My husband is a teacher and with today he's going until the 25th or 26th of June, they also have a summer session that starts the Monday after the 4th, he's less than impressed.  They have had so many stupid days off where it wasn't even snowing, today is justified.

I think there have been so many this year that kids are going to lose part of their spring vacations AND have days added at the end of the year.
Has it really been that bad of a winter? I can only think of one or two days that were that bad.  I know that I don't have to think of the safety of thousands of children going to school or anything, but I don't feel like this winter, so far, has been that much worse than others.

Perhaps I'm just glossing over the winter and dreaming too hard about spring to notice?
Here it has been bad.  We're normally are at something like 25 inches of snow at this point of winter and this year we've had over 60 inches plus all the freezing temperatures.  After a few mild winters, everyone is freaking out.

Schools have had 4 snow/cold days already and they are now tacked on to the end of the school year.  An old friend is getting married June 14.  The last day of school was supposed to be June 4.  She now has to work until June 12.  Oops.
I have heard about Chicago a lot this year.  Especially with the cold.  But yesterday I could see grass in parts of my yard.  Maybe it's regional?  I wonder, when does Chicago start school in the fall?  June 12 seems to early to me. We've gone until almost July.  Though it's entirely possible it's because we start later here.
Grass?  I don't even remember what that looks like.

Our school district starts mid August.  Like around the 18th.

Exactly! Normally we have feet and feet or snow hanging around, but there is grass this year.

That makes sense.  We start after labor day for the most part.

  • Day three of being at home.  (Not due to snow, though....   the grass is green and my spring bulbs are all coming up.)

My daughter is sick and I am working from my bedroom while she is in front of the tv.  I should start planning my acceptance speech for the "Mother of the Year" award.

So, did anyone else have to dig their car out from under the ice and snow and drive, really carefully, to work?

We've only got a level 2 snow emergency here, so I had to at least make the attempt.  I succeeded.  Oh yay.  My hubby is lucky and can work from home.

I am amused about one thing though.  Last week Ohio State closed due to the cold but Columbus State Community College only delayed classes until 11am.  Today, OSU is open and CSCC is closed.  I guess CSCC is more worried about students getting to campus than freezing once they get there.  Of course I don't have classes tonight, so it doesn't affect me at all.

Maybe it'll be worse tomorrow and we'll actually get up to level 3!  No work, no class.  I could handle a Thursday holed up at home.  I've got vacation time I can use. :D
I thought that was weird too...my hubby skipped classes this morning at OSU after he saw our neighbor spin out in front of our apartment, but he still has to show up for clinic this afternoon.

    I'm home.  Snow day!

  • It took me over an hour to get to work (double the normal time) and I started out late to give more time to the plows and salt trucks. No dice. It was like no plows existed.

It has been a miserable Chicago winter. This damn snow NEVER melts because of the cold on days it doesn't snow. The public works guys are so tired. This morning I turned the hottest water possible in the shower and I was colder in the water than out! I know my MIL gets out of school before Memorial Day (farming area) and this year they're going into June.

  • My college closed today, so I didn't have classes, but I still have to drive to that same city for work later today. I work at a hospital, which ya know, doesn't close. I'm supposed to work 4-11pm and we're getting freezing rain right now so I'm not looking forward to my drive in.
DH is a school teacher, and he has a snow day today, which is his 3rd I think since they went back in January. They've had a lot of delays, though.

  • Just got home. It wasn't too bad this morning driving 30mins for swimming lessons. However it took over an hour to get home. Plus I think I had 3 heart attacks due to the driver in front of me. He kept driving on the complete wrong side of the road.
  • Oh, and I used to say I wanted snow days...until I realized schools have to make them up at the end of the year. No way.
Schools around here have a certain number of snow days already built into the school year calendar. Every few years they have enough snow days they have to actually extend the school year though.

  • Luckily this storm Brett was actually home for and not at the fire station. We were able to take Sammie to Pre-K this morning and Emmett to the Dr for his well-check, but he had to snow blow twice yesterday and a third time this morning.
