FRIDAY CONFESSIONS

Re: FRIDAY CONFESSIONS

  • @mrsvedo - my mom posted on FB that I was pregnant before we were telling people and couldn't understand why I was so upset.

About the Olympics - I think it was the onus of the Olypmic committee to change venues (which they should have done - Russia argued that everything was nearly ready and couldn't be stopped, but according to news reports I've seen, this can't have been true).  I agree with pp - for someone whose entire life has been focused on going to the Olympics, only have the rug pulled out from under them because of a crappy siting decision and overall poor planning, that it would be absolutely awful.

I also think that you should be eliminated from being able to compete in the Olympics if you (1) have been on your country's team many times before, and (2) are a paid professional in your sport - and I mean getting paid for playing your sport full time as a job, not that you don't work because you win prize money or make Gatorade commercials.  I realize I'm in the minority for these views.

I don't agree.  If you're talented, you're talented.  You should be able to compete in the Olympics.  It shouldn't be held against you that you get paid for your talent.

I would be so mad! We're definitely making it clear that he cannot post or tell until we give the go ahead. I know my mom will be thrilled and I trust her not to blab. Hopefully she can keep my dad in check too! ;)

  • I'm "working from home" today and I'm normally much more productive here than I am in the office. But, I cannot get it together today. I'm on the couch watching netflix with my work email open.

I think that if you're going to allow paid professionals in a few Olympic sports, you should allow them in all.

  • It's definitely getting harder and harder for me to stomach the dehumanization of my LGBTQIA friends.

And the young people I know, babies practically, that are so sure they'll be rejected that suicide seems logical... It is getting harder every single day.

I have started wearing my rainbow ally pin on my school lanyard. It may not make a difference, but it could... I hope.
  • Congrats @mrsvedo.  I had to be super explicit with my mom about not putting it on FB when I told her I was pregnant.  She would have posted it while I was talking to her if I'd let her.

  • Last night our next door neighbor rear-ended my husband's truck which was parked on the street.  I was home alone, and went outside when I heard the noise.  He was sitting in his car, door open, on the phone, so I don't know if he was going to come knock on the door or not.

His little Toyota Celica put a giant dent in the rear bumper of an F150 - the giant 4x4 F150 - and moved it forward about 3 feet.  He must have slammed his foot on the gas, I really don't understand how he could have hit the truck that hard.  I mean, those things are practically indestructable.  He said he thought his car was in reverse?

He said his car was already messed up, so he wasn't going to file for insurance, gestured at the dent and paint transfer, and asked if that was okay.  Uh, WTF are you thinking, NO!  After which I nicely asked him to hang up his phone, give me his driver's license and insurance card, and called H and the police.  And by nicely, I mean I used my awesome vocabulary instead of creating a scene in the middle of the street.

  • I'll watch the Olympic sports that DH wants to see, just to show some support for the athletes who have worked so hard to get there even though I'm deeply saddened by a lot of the things coming out about Russia.

I love the Olympics!  Summer & winter!  I think what these athletes can do is absolutely amazing!  Every two years, I sacrifice sleep to watch as much as possible!  ;)

And if I am spoiled before the broadcast, I will be pissed (which is why I don't follow any of the "official" Olympic social media feeds - they spoiled way too much during 2012)!  X(

Olympic sites are chosen, what, 8 or 10 years in advance?  I don't know if they would have been able to switch the location on short notice.  Unless they went back to the Vancouver or Turin???

  • Oh!  And I agree with the poster who mentioned not allowing "professional" athletes compete.  I find it bizarre that the Olympic hockey teams are made up of a LARGE amount of NHL players.

That's what made the "Miracle on Ice" team so amazing!  These "amateur" athletes from the US beat the "professional" equivilent team from the Soviet Union!  Awesome stuff!!!

  • I confess that I'm having beer for dinner.

  • My cousin's friend's mother just posted on facebook that my great aunt died before I knew about it. We were very close to my grandmother's sisters growing up, so I know great aunts aren't a big deal to everyone, but it's a really big deal to me. I hate facebook and people who can't think about anyone other than themselves right now. One more reason why I can't stand facebook anymore.

  • The only Winter Olympic sport I watched was figure skating and since Michelle Kwan retired and they changed the scoring system, it's dead to me...so no Olympics.

My other confession is that if one more person I know gets pregnant, I'm going to start bathing in Fiji water because it's obviously an epidemic.
