Anyone else in serious debt ?

Re: Anyone else in serious debt ?

  • I'm curious, anyone that doesn't mind getting too personal, what are your salaries and what schools did you go to that you have that large amount of student loans ?

Personally, H and I's take home(monthly) is $6200 and my student loans are 20k(not near as bad as my car loans), went to a couple different state schools(in PA), and the worst part is I haven't even completed my degree yet, makes me sick, but life gets in the way.

Ours is always tricky to estimate because we are both self employeed.  Haven't done this 2013 taxes yet.  In 2012 DH made $65,000 (gross) and I made $10,000 (gross), after deductions we made $18,000.

I went to the music conservatory at UMKC for 5 years and William Jewell for 1 year and racked up $45,000 in SL.  DH only had to go to an art school in Denver for 2 years to get his photog degree. Surprisingly his loans were about as much as mine for only 2 years!  His parents paid for part and he paid the rest off himself many years ago.

  • I graduated college 4 years ago with a bachelors degree. I have 109k in student loans and just my salary is 47k. thats right - more then double my salary. I could probably make an additional 10k with a different company as i am underpaid - but the flexible hours and my awesome boss and coworkers make it worth it to me. My hapiness and my sanity are very important. My husband makes 32k and is underpaid - he was making 47k 3 years ago and has gone down ever since after being laid off twice. So he also works a second part time job which he loves.  DH only has a two year degree and his parents paid so no student loans from him - thank god!

In college, My parents had no money to help so every single expense went on student loans including my laptop and all my books and there was a semester or two where i took out an extra 2k to pay back other money i had borrowed from people. I also grew up in a more expensive state so tuition was slightly higher even in state schools. First year i stayed on campus at a state school. I hated it. That loan is about 28k now for just that one year. The next semester I transfered to my dream college (private university) trying to get my dream job and still lived on campus.... Only to discover i hated the school and the field and i didn't want that "dream job". That one semesters loan is at about 26k  After that i finally transferred to a nearby state school and lived at home.... About 6 months later I met my husband and discovered my real dream job field - which ofcourse doesn't even require a 4 year degree for - but at that point i was too far in to turn back. Then the day after graduation i moved out of state with him and got my current job which with my starting salary the minimum loan payments even were impossible so they got deferred and kept earning interest for another 2-3 years. Which at 8% gained me another 15k in debt - awesome.

I was a walking financial mistake. No 18 year old should be allowed to make that kind of decision - i had no idea what i wanted or what i was doing and right now thats about a 50k mistake. If i would have just commuted and went to the school i graduated from after HS - I would only have about 60k in debt which would be SO much more manageable.

Our take home pay averages $7,800/month. DH had $37,000 in loans from undergrad (English) and grad school (Education) at a state school- we paid that off in January 2013. I had $0 in loans- got a partial scholarship for Undergrad (Math), my mom covered the rest, and my work paid for grad school (Economics). I also went to a state school. We have no car loans- mine was paid off in 2009, DH's in 2011. Both were purchased certified pre-owned from a dealership and are 11 and 8 years old now, running great, and have 60,000 miles on them each. We have a mortgage (with taxes, $1,300/month for a 15 year loan refinanced in 2010) and 2 girls in day care full time ($1,700/month). Right now, day care is our biggest expense. Once they're in school, we'll probably get newer cars and potentially move to a larger house.. day care is just consuming all of our free money (after utilities, bills, savings) right now.

  • Between DH and I, we average between $4400-$5600/month take home pay after taxes, insurance, etc. DH never went to college so he has no student loans, but I do have ~$9000 from my year trying for my Bachelor's in Architecture. I had to leave due to an expanding family and far commute. I went back to a community college where financial aid paid for all my schooling there. DH works for a ship yard while I work as a secretary.

Currently, I use my monthly salary ($1600) to pay off our debt. Without cars and SL, we currently have $6000 in CC debt. We will be paying that off by May. We will then be saving up for a house and other life goals. SLs have a small monthly minimum balance with low interest rates so we chose to put a little more than the minimums so we can save up for the house. We also have a LO in daycare. We also save any money that we have at the end of the month towards our savings.

  • I went to a NESCAC school and graduated in 4 years, H spend 3 years in school and never graduated, and my job is paying for my masters degree through one of the Ivys.  I make $38K at my job and H brings home about $42K once holiday-season overtime is accounted for. H has about $45K in Student loans and I have about $12K. We're down to $3K in CC debt from $24K.

We live in an area where most people are grossly underpaid and housing is not inexpensive (a 500 sqft 1BR apartment will cost you $800 a month). The average salary in my field is $55-60K. I have also noticed that there is massive gender inequality in salaries through my employer. My first job here I got paid $12.13/hour H got a job here, doing pretty much the same thing, without a bachelor's degree, and was making $17.85/hour

I love my boss and my job, but I think eventually housing prices here and higher earning potential elsewhere will force me to leave.

I can totally relate to having loans from a school/major that you didn't like and feel like it was a complete waste of time and money, so frustrating! Just try to stay focused on the future and how amazing it will be when the loans are paid off..eventually. My husband doesn't have loans either(he's in the after market car customization field) and reading everyone's responses made me think about that and be incredibly grateful.

  • cbee817--Congrats on paying off the school loans and having no car loans that's incredible ! I can imagine how excited you must of been ! I'm shocked at how expensive full time day care is. I'm a nanny and at that price you could almost hire someone to babysit, that's insane, I always thought daycare was a much more affordable option.
  • smbenevides1989-- 9k in SL isn't too bad, I'm sure you can have that paid off soon with some good planning! Love the princess Tiana outfit on your daughter, we're going to Disney in a month, woohoo !
  • GDaisy09: that's awesome you put such a dent in your cc debt, that's my goal as well !
  • Going to Disney ?  I hope it is not added to your Credit Card debt.
  • Def not adding the trip to the debt, its paid off, which will make it so much more enjoyable !
  • I have about $98k in student loan debt from law school.  I'm in house counsel these days, and between student loans, mortgages, and daycare costs, I feel like I'm drowning.  I actually have started my own business on the side in an effort to help pay down those debts sooner so I can get rid of the emotional burden of them...

We've been really thankful.  DH and I graduated the same year with engineering and business degrees, debt free, thanks to scholarships and using our own cash towards tuition at times (with some help from parents).  When we got married 3.5 years ago, we grossed around $83,000, today we gross $119,000, and our take-home after taxes, 401(k), medical, dental, life/disability insurance comes to approx $6,500/month.
