  • I think giving stuff up for lent is lame. I would much rather do like a RAOK a day than focus on my waist. I feel like giving up chocolate or sweets is thinking about yourself and that isn't what lent is all about.
  • I think raising the minimum wage substantially (more than .50/hour) is stupid.  Most people that make minimum wage usually don't think farther than the impact an increase would have on their own income.

I feel like maybe this is one of the crappiest UOs I've ever seen in here.  And that is saying a lot.

Have you ever had to work for minimum wage?  Because I have and it fucking sucks.  You cannot live on minimum wage and there are so many hard working people who deserve so much more than they are currently getting.

  • Well that's unfair. I've worked hard to get where I'm at and I also have the student loans to prove it. I would love to protest for (and get) a 39% raise. That's how ridiculous it is.

You can't possibly think it's a good idea to pay the guy at McDonald's $9 or $10 an hour to flip burgers.  Those jobs (and wages) are intended for people who need a part-time job (ex. high school students), not for someone to actually make a living off of. People are in control of their own destiny and instead of wasting time protesting the minimum wage they should be applying for better paying jobs or college! Work smarter, not harder.

And where do people think these raises are going to come from?...... Businesses will raise the prices on almost everything and probably start laying people off.  Doing things like drastically increasing the minimum wage leaves the middle class worse off and paying more for the same items without any pay increase.

And, like I said before, I'm not opposed to increasing the minimum wage.  I just don't think it's a good economic decision to raise it so drastically.  I'm sure everyone here remembers when gas prices skyrocketed seemingly overnight. Economic changes need to be done carefully and over time whenever possible to avoid major upset.

  • Ah, the ol' bootstraps argument.

The minimum wage we currently have hasn't kept up with levels of inflation (not that many starting salaries have). The minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Forty hours per week brings home a whopping $290 a week, $1160 a month. I don't know about where you live, but my first apartment with DH was $1050 a month and wasn't near any public transportation. Factor in electricity, food, etc., it's nearly impossible to live on minimum wage.

    I can't walk away from this thread. I just can't. I know I should, but I can't.

This economy sucks. There aren't any better jobs for them to apply for. Many of the minimum wage earners are college grads with hefty loans already, and many of them are working 2-3 jobs just to make ends meet.

Don't even get me started on the cycle of poverty that contributes to this problem.

  • There's a reason it's called an UO. No need for personal attacks or name calling. This will be the last one I ever try to participate in.
  • UO isn't blanket permission to say ignorant shit and not get called out on it.

Run away from it now if you want, but I'd respect you more if you owned it or conceded.

  • You personally attacked anyone who makes minimum wage and basically said that they don't deserve the means to live comfortably.

^^Is that because you are working harder or smarter?

I just need to know if you've every worked at a minimum wage job like McDonalds?  Becausethose people do way more than just flip burgers. I cleaned fuckin' nasty ass public bathrooms on my shifts. That right there earns someone $9-$10 an hour.
Yes, I have worked at McDonalds... for three years during HIGH SCHOOL... and then I worked retail during college. I've been there, done that.  During college I found a job I didn't like but it paid the bills.  I worked full time and went to school full time. I did what I had to do to support myself by MYSELF. I stand by what I said and am willing to agree to disagree on this topic.

Well, if it worked for you, it'll work for everyone. Good to know! I'll just cheerfully tell the next barista/server/salesperson that I see that if they just work a liiiitle harder and go to college that the world can be their oyster.

ETA: I suck at gifs. How about this instead - imagine someone jerking off slowly.

Aren't you so lucky to have had such wonderful opportunities. Some people aren't that lucky, especially in this economy. Had you not been given those opportunities could you live comfortably on what you made then?
