RE Scheduled

Just made my initial appointment with an RE. I found someone 10 mins from my job who works with Columbia University and came recommended. My appointment is next Tuesday which is the same day I am leaving for vacation. AF is due any day and my OBGYN is Friday. Now I can just get all my paperwork in hand on Friday and bring it to the RE. I'm excited and bummed...

That's more than our insurance covered.  Once all of our testing was finished and we were given the "IF" label, we were pretty much all OOP.  Had we done TI, our insurance would have covered a bit of it, but our IUIs were all OOP.

That sounds like great coverage to me! I only have diagnostic testing and treatment of underlying cause covered. So basically it covered initial bloodwork, the HSG, and my lap surgery, but after that, we became 100% OOP.  Wouldn't even pay for DH's s/a or bloodwork. That's awesome that they cover so much for you!

What is your responsibility (coinsurance, deductible)?
Are meds covered under regular pharmacy plan or under medical?
Is there a waiting period before trying TI vs IUI?

    What is TI??
I have no deductible but my copays are mainly $50 but can go up to $500 if it is testing that has to be done in a hospital.

  • The amount of phone calls you have to place just to make the appointment was insane. I'm still holding onto a string of hope that my random spotting will go away and not turn into something more but deep down I know that's not true.
It will be nice to finally speak with someone whose #1 goal is to get you pregnant. The consultation is an hour so I will have to write a nice list of questions to ask.

    What is TI??
I have no deductible but my copays are mainly $50 but can go up to $500 if it is testing that has to be done in a hospital.

TI = timed intercourse (generally what people do on a regular Clomid cycle)

Also, copay is different than coinsurance. Copay is a flat fee for service. Like $20 for an office visit with the doctor. Coinsurance means the percentage of payment you're responsible for. For example, my insurance covers IUI/IVF at 50% meaning they pay half of the negotiated rate and I pay the other half. Yours may be 100% paid, but it's something to be aware of.

    *Stuck in the Box*
I would ask what your maximum out of pocket expense is also.  Your % of coinsurance counts toward this.
So if you have a 20% coinsurance after you meet your deductible of $1,000.  Then the 20% you pay for each testing/procedure, will count toward your maximum out of pocket expense.  Say, $2,000.  Then you know that in a calendar year the maximum you could pay out is $3,000.  Minus your co-pays (some plans count those toward the maximum OOP, others do not).
