What CCs do you have?

I have been wondering for sometime what everyone here has for CCs. I just got on Credit Karma and smiled seeing all my CC balances at $0.

I have ones from
Our credit union- It started as a secured card when I was 18.
Chase Freedom- I felt like I "needed' another one so I got this.
Macy's- The discounts are just SO good. My mom uses it when we shop and she pays the bill at the service counter. I got it becasue I was able to get a pearl jewelry set retail for $800 for $125 during a "One Day Sale." Pearls and lace were the only dream I had for my wedding as a kid so I made sure I got them. Haha.
Jewelry store card- I had my ring picked out and we had the cash and then I walked by a diamond slightly smaller but way nicer and fell in love. We got the CC to cover the $350 we didn't have at the time to get the diamond placed in a band.

We both have credit scores over 740 just in case this looks out of control....

    Credit cards for me:

    Ann Taylor

    Macys

    Kohls

    MasterCard- chase

    Discover card

    Lowes

    Kay's jewelry

    Credit cards for H:

    Home Depot

    MasterCard- chase

    Credit union credit card

    Bank of American cc

That's probably about it....I used to have a few more, but they either got closed due to inactivity or I closed them for peace of mind. I'm tempted to close that Ann Taylor card. I've only used it once or twice and have only had it open for a year or so. We pay ours off every month in full. we don't always use all these cc's. A lot of them just sit in the safe.

  • I have a Capital One credit card for emergencies that my wife keeps for me.  She has two credit cards one for rewards that she has monthly small bills paid from and the other for emergencies.

We have 0 balance on all of them, but we have.. Chase Sapphire Preferred we use for rewards, BOA Visa because of length of time having it, Macy's to get discount on our furniture, Sears to get discount on our appliances, I also have an American Eagle card that I try to just use once a year to keep open I've had it for 12 years and Target Red card for the discount.

  • I have:

    Kohl's for the discounts/coupons (never paid interest/carry a balance)
Victoria's Secret for the points (never paid interest/carry a balance)
Discover- at the time I opened it I used it for a 0% intro fee for a balance transfer, currently an $1,800 balance I'm working to pay off.
    Capital One- $0 balance
Small Credit Union Card- only a $300 limit, was my first credit card and longest standing one so I'll never close it. $0 balance
Home Depot- Used for new appliances in November w/ 0% interest for 24 months. Hoping to pay this off with any money we get for the wedding.

  • I have a Wells Fargo credit card and a Maurices card. H has a Capital One card and a Home Depot card. We only use the HD card to get the 0% interest when something needs to be replaced ASAP and we don't have the cash on hand to pay for it right away. We're cash people though, if we can't pay cash for it, we can't afford. The cards are just a nice cushion in case something happens.

    We each have a Chase
First National Bank (no fee's for international use)
Jewelry Store (discount on our wedding rings)
    Target
    Maurices
    Victoria's Secret
    Best Buy (both of us)
    Sears
    Appliance store
    Dress Barn

Yeah, we have a lot of cards.  None of them are in our wallets, and most of them were opened for a large purchase and the initial discount.  We seriously do not use our credit cards at all now, and all of these sit at home in a drawer.

  • DH has a Citi Card Visa which is his oldest card and he gets 1% back. He also has a very old Discover card that he never ever uses.

We both have a joint AMEX for our COSTCO membership, which gives us 3% back on gas, 2% at restaurants and travel and 1% on everything else.

We also have a Target Red Card because we do all our grocery shopping there and so we get the 5% back on that plus the free shipping for any and all online purchases.

I have a USBANK VISA which is my back up card. It stays at home and I use it twice per year to keep it active.

I also have a USAA MasterCard, which is my oldest card and it gives 1% cash back.

We pay everything off in full each month. And, if we need to, we do open new cards with 0% promos for large purchases like appliances, significant furniture purchases, etc.

  • I just have an Amex travel account. H is on my account so we each have a card for it. That's it, lol. I don't like having lots of cards. I think I technically have a citibank account too but haven't used it in years.
    Anniversary
  • I pay all of mine in full each month.  That said, the MM gods will probably strike me down for this, but...

-Fidelity AmEx: 2% back on all purchases deposited into my Roth account.  We get about $600/year back on this - 2014 will probably be higher.  We fully fund both Roths every year, so it works out to be a big savings for us.  This is my go-to card for most purchases, and I've been racking up points recently with a ton of reimbursable expenses from my new job (awesome)

-Amazon Visa: 3% back on Amazon.com (which we shop at frequently).  It's also my back-up Visa for the few places that won't take an AmEx

-Costco AmEx: 4% back on gas at all gas stations because we are executive Costco members.

-Target REDcard: 5% off all Target purchases and free shipping at Target.com.  I primarily use this for small grocery runs.

-Kohls: I shop there 4 times per year when I get the 30% off coupons.  You have to pay with the Kohls card to use the coupons.  We buy a lot of clothing basics here.

-Macys card: I opened it for the registry rewards when we got married.  We got over $400 back in rewards, so it was worth it.  I'll be closing this after we buy a house.

-Williams Sonoma card: I also opened for my wedding and got about $150 back in rewards.  I'll also close this after we buy a house.

-Pottery Barn: A whopping 10% back on all purchases at PB, PB Kids, or the PB outlet.  We know so many people getting married and having babies that's it's been a fabulous card for us.  I also use it for Christmas and birthday gifts.

-American Express "blue for students" - this was my first credit card.  We will close it after we buy a house.

-PenFed credit union card: This is our travel credit card.  It has no foreign transaction fees, and it's a true chip and PIN card, so we can use it in automated machines (ie: train stations) over in Europe.  A lot of American banks will issue chip cards without a PIN, but that's just asking for your CC info to be stolen.  PenFed is one of the few American banks that will PIN-protect your chip card.

-Capitol One card: Our back up travel credit card - it also has no foreign transaction fees.  H carries this card under his shirt at all times when we are out of the country, in case the PenFed card gets pick-pocketed (No, we're not paranoid.  I've had several pickpocket attempts made against me over the years. I stick out as an American tourist, H not so much).

So.... that's 11 cards, but 3 will be closed after we've gone through the mortgage process, and 2 we keep in a safe and only use when we're traveling out of the country.  Having 6 cards we use regularly isn't so bad.

I actually don't own any credit cards anymore. My husband has 2 that I am an authorized user on. Citi - American Airlines & American Express - Delta. I pay my portion off each Friday when I get paid. I had a hard time with credit cards before, so I like having the accountability and paying them weekly. He also pays off his balance monthly. We use them only because it helps get us airline miles. I would actually prefer to just use the envelope system if I'm being honest.

Yeah I don't think credit cards are bad at all if you always pay them off.  We earn/save a LOT of money each year by working points efficiently.

I also like the consumer protection that comes with a credit card over paying with cash or a debit card... I've been the victim of purse snatching before, and I simply don't carry cash because it's too easy to steal.  And for debit cards, I really dislike the idea of swiping the card and sending my bank account info into a machine and then entering the PIN needed to access my money directly.  At least with a credit card there's a layer of protection between the store and my bank account.  And consumer protection laws for credit cards are pretty stringent... they're significantly less stringent for debit cards (which seems ridiculous since that's the direct access to your actual money).

I hesitate to recommend credit cards on these boards because some people have a bad history with them.  But when used responsibly, they really are the best way to pay (IMO).  They just get a bad rep when people don't use them the way they should be used.

Beyond that I have a Sears card, two BoA cards, a Victorias Secret card, and an Express card. I don't use them, except sporadically to keep the credit lines open for emergencies.

Exactly.  I have three credit cards.  A MasterCard that was originally with MBNA America before they got bought out by Bank of America.  I despise BoA and would close this card except it's the oldest card I have.  I have a Chase Freedom card because it had better rewards and a Discover card.  That's it.  I do not get store cards.  If someone doesn't take one of these, I find another vendor.  I also carry relatively little cash.  That said, I never charge anything I don't have the money for and all credit cards get paid in full every month.

I use Kolhs, best buy, and old Navy, pay off whenever we use them. Except we put big purchases on H's cards and pay off in the 0% time frame to help his credit. I know paying off each month will too.

We use PNC cash builder for groceries, and Aaa visa for gas. Again, pay off each month. PNC we get cash back, AAA Points. I use the points to get gift cards for Christmas, and we use it again to pay the yearly fee for AAA.

We have: 2 citicards each (earn rewards), 1 capital one card each (0% interest until July 2014 and earns cash back), BR Luxe (earn rewards to Gap, ON, BR, free shipping, free tailoring at BR), J.Crew (earn rewards, free tailoring), Target (5% back, free shipping), Orville's (local appliance store- used their 0% financing for our washer/dryer, stove, fridge, dishwasher), and Sears (used their 0% financing for a snow blower and a new garage door opener).

All get paid in full each month unless it's 0%, then we divide the amount spent by the number of months we have to pay it off. Right now, Sears and Orville's have $0 balance and J.Crew only gets used once every few months. All the others are used monthly.

    H-

ArtVan Furniture He hasn't used in 4 years, but it's still open. (Nothing, sometimes 18 months interest free)

    Me-
    Barclay Visa (Rewards)
    Nordstrom (Rewards)
    Saks Fifth Avenue (Rewards)
  • Interesting question and answers.  We have:

    1. MBNA, which is my oldest card and has the highest available balance.  It also contributes 1% of all purchases to the charity of my choice.  It gets used periodically to maintain the account.

    2. Citi card, which is our go-to card because of the points.

    3. Target, which we only use at Target for the 5% discount and free shipping.

Now that we have a house, we are actually looking into opening a few other brand cards to take advantage of short-term and long-term deals.
  • Credit cards are finally all paid off!!! I plan on cancelling most of them but haven't yet. We don't EVER use them. If i do have to for some reason, I pay it off immediately.

    I have:

    1. Kohl's Card (I got it when i was working there in college but now i despise it and only keep it around for discounts - the rare times i shop there anymore)

    2. Best Buy Card (we got it to buy a TV we couldn't afford - and then again to buy a refridgerator we couldn't afford). I hate monthly payments.

    3. Chase Student Credit Card - my first.

    4. Chase Freedom

    DH has:

    1. Chase Credit Card (was Washington Mutual)

    2. Ashley Furniture (If it didnt cancel itself by now beccause we haven't touched it in 3 years. We bought our bed frame and couch on it when we got our apartment)

    3. Zales - Paid for my engagement ring setting with it.

Thats quite enough for me. I've learned the hard was that financing plans and credit cards are not all they are cracked up to be. I'd rather just save  up pay cash and never have to worry about it again.

  • Glad I'm not the only one with a wallet full of plastic! my credit score is 760+ so I feel like I'm managing it pretty well.

LLBean-visa (1% on everything, 3% on LLBean purchases plus free monogramming, used to get us free shipping but now they ship to everyone for free)-this is the only card we're currently carrying a balance on transferred H's debt for a 0% interest offer...just waiting for the tax return to deposit so we can pay it off

Khols-for reasons stated above, only shop when I have a 30% off coupon and they're giving out Kohl's Cash

Gap-literally the only place (gap/banana) that I can buy jeans that fit me-5% back

TJMaxx-Mastercard- 1% on everything 3% at marshalls, TJMaxx, Homegoods... TJMaxx and Kohls are the only places within an hour of our house to shop

Mattress Giant-haven't used this for anything except to finance purchasing our mattress at 0% interest when our old one was causing us both back and neck pain

the only other place I've considered opening a card is Home Depot...not sure what benefits besides financing it gets you though.

I have had so many cards since I started building credit, but I only use a few.

    I have major: Chase
First Financial Bank USA (first card, oldest card, largest balance)
Bank of America (keep it to build points, and has the lowest APR at 7.9%)

    Store: Home Depot
Macy's (barely ever use it - usually for Christmas)
Davids Bridal (used for my flower girls dresses - now I don't use it)
              Kohls
              JCPenney

DH has only 3 cards: Discover, Belden Jewelers, and Best Buy <-- it will remain this way too.

Since I started the Debt Snowball, I have paid everyone of mine and DH's CCs (except one that I am currently working on) off. If I use the card, it does get paid off by the end of the month. I like to keep it that way too.

  • LL Bean Visa - I use to buy stuff from there a lot & it made sense to get the card because then I got free shipping on purchases & returns. I now use this as my individual credit card

Bank of America - I added my husband to the account and this is our emergency account now (working on paying off debt we put on it when we bought our house & got out of control buying things for the house)

Lowe's - we get a 5% discount on each purchase (which saved us a lot when we needed a new grill), we pay this off in full each month. It will come in really handy if we end up getting our new fence from them because we'll save 5% on it too.

Discover - this is husbands from before we got married, it has a very small limit and he just puts gas & hair cuts on it, we were paying it off each month but want to put something on it to show that he can use it responsibly in hopes of improving his credit score

Really interesting to see everyone's responses! I had never thought about it before, but the contents of a person's wallet is something that isn't usually shared.

    Here's mine:
    1. Citi American Airlines card (big purchases go on this, like plane tickets and furniture)
    2. Costco American Express (both DH and I are account holders for this one, for the gas!)
    3. Chase Debit Card (most everything goes on this)
    4. Bank of America credit card that hasn't been touched in probably ten years, but it's my oldest line of credit so it stays.

DH has a Chase debit (again, most everything he purchases goes on that) and a Citi credit card that maybe gets used once a month.

And that's it!  Noticing a lot of people have store CC's, maybe it's time for me to give in to the ole' Target Red Card!  :)
I'm a pretty big fan of this card, data breach and all.

Stores cards tend to get worse reviews than regular cards because the interest rates are usually higher, and stores will extend credit to just about anybody who walks through the door.  So more people get "burned" by them.  If you read reviews it might scare you off.

For the Target card... I really like cards that give you the "rewards" at the cash register.  It's really nice that you get a flat 5% off of everything (except prescriptions).  You don't have to save points or "redeem" points, and you don't get rewards certificates that you have to spend before an expiration date.  It's just a flat discount.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my PB card because the 10% back (and once a year 20% back) is insane.  But there was a time when I got a rewards certificate, and I had no weddings, babies, or birthdays coming up, so I had to go find something to spend it on before it expired.  I think I bought candles.  Anyway Target is nice because you don't have to "bank" points.

  • Gdaisy, I love my Amazon Visa.  I've had one since 2009.

Once you enroll your card on your Amazon account (and it may be done automatically now, I'm not sure), the points just automatically populate in your Amazon account as you earn them.  You don't have to redeem them or anything through your credit card account.  Then during checkout at Amazon.com you can select to pay with points as a payment option - the default on my account is to pay with cash, but if I want to pay with points it's literally 3 clicks to switch it during check out.  Amazon also let's you use points for partial payment, which is really nice - it's not an all or nothing type thing.

We buy a lot on Amazon because it's so easy, so we definitely get our money's worth.

I've also had a couple of fraudulent charges made to that card, and Chase has always resolved it quickly.

  • Awesome! Thanks, I decided to open one over the weekend, it just seemed to make sense, we end-up buying so much stuff on amazon because there just aren't that many stores near us. the closest target is an hour away, most of the time it's not worth the dirve.

Thanks! they gave me a bunch of extra points for opening the card and I ended up getting my whole purchase "free".

  • American Express Blue Preferred card- just opened recently for cash back rewards- 6% back on groceries, 3% back on gas and dept stores, 1% back on everything else. Can't beat that cash back. This is our go-to card for every day purchases and gets paid off every month.

Discover card- not sure if I should close this one or not, this was my go-to card before I opened AmEx. Gets 1% back on everything and 5% on rotating categories.

Citi Platinum - High credit limit, only 6.74% interest rate, had it a long time. Use this one if there is an emergency or big purchase that we plan to finance for a few months, which is pretty rare.

Best Buy - used to finance large electronics like TVs or appliances at 0% interest.

Care Credit - for expensive dental work or other medical emergencies with 0% interest financing.
