Recs for non-religious books about grief

I'm hoping you can help.  My Father in Law has been in ICU for a little over two months and tomorrow they are making the decision whether to continue care and I believe the decision will be to not continue.  DH is not religious at all and has never experienced a loss.  I know he's been reaching out on the internet to read some articles about grief and whatnot to prepare himself but I was thinking maybe there's some type of self-help book or grief counseling type book that I could also get for him to help him out.  FIL has MS, epilepsy, congenital heart failure, and most recently they found a blood infection. infection in the leads to his pacemaker, and lung cancer so things are not looking good and no one believes he'll be able to recover.  I, of course, don't want him to die but I do want to be prepared if it's the case.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Recs for non-religious books about grief

  • I don't have any recommendations.  I just wanted to say that I'm sorry you are going through this!

If he goes to hospice, the workers may be able to offer book suggestions.  In my experience, hospice care workers are some of kindest people you will ever meet.

  • I'm going to look when I get home because I can't remember the name, but there's one on helping others with grief that's on my bookshelf that has some great recommendations in it.

  • Found it in my LibraryThing catalog! The Art of Comforting: What to Say and Do for People in Distress by Val Walker.  Also, Joan Didion's memoirs about losing her husband and daughter (The Year of Magical Thinking and Blue Nights) are both amazing.

  • I am so sorry to hear that. I haven't read it, but have heard a lot about Elizabeth Kubler Ross's book, On Death and Dying, which talks about the 5 stages of grief.

This.  My friend who is a grief counselor swears by this book.  I'm so sorry for you DH and I know it's a tough time for your family right now.

  • No advice on books but wanted to say I'm so sorry for what your family and ILs are going through.
