What is your star rating criteria?

We all rate our books many different ways, I am curious how you decide how many stars to give a book :-)

Re: What is your star rating criteria?

  • 1*-Did not Finish
    2*- Hated/ highly disliked
3*- It was just ok, nothing great but nothing awful (or too awful)
4*- Really liked it but something bothered me
    5*- Absolutely LOVED!

  • One Star : I don't think I've ever rated a book one star.  Probably because if I hated a book that much, I wouldn't bother finishing it.
Two Stars: I got through it,barely, but I would not recommend it to other people.
Three Stars: I enjoyed reading it, but probably would not read it again.
Four Stars: I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to someone else.
Five Stars: LOVED IT!!  It could be a terribly written book for all I care, but if it sucked me in enough to overlook the mistakes, it will still get those 5 stars.

I need to rate more books.  Most of the books I have rated have been 4 or 5 stars.

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
    "I don't much care where –"
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”

This is almost exactly my criteria

Me too, but I do rate books 1 star, I usually only end up finishing one star books if they are for book clubs or challenges.

  • 1* = DNF
    2* = Meh.
3* = Enjoyed it well enough, maybe even enjoyed it a good amount, but it didn't stand out as something I'm going to rave about.
4* = Most of what I read. I liked it, probably a lot, and would recommend it to someone looking for something similar.
    5* = loved!

Do they have an actual criteria?

  • 1 - Just awful.  Either poorly written or something that falls way below my expectations.
2 - Not great but not deserving of 1 star.  Usually I put stuff that is tedious/too long/in need of an editor here.
3 - Not bad, not amazing.  Stuff I liked but that is ultimately forgettable.
4 - Really good, just missing that 5 star quality.  I seem to give more 4 star ratings than any other.
5 - Amazing books that I absolutely loved.  Occasionally something that was just beautifully written even if the subject matter wasn't my cup of tea.

  • 1 - Terrible
    2 - Bad
3 - Generic - not exceptional either way
    4 - Liked it
    5 - Loved it

When I do reviews though, I review the writing and how much I enjoyed it separately.  There have been too many really awful books that I've loved and too many really well written books that bored me to do anything else.

  • I try to hold back a bit on rating a book 5*.  It has to be "OMG AMAZING!" to get 5*.  Books that are really, really, really good get 4*.

For comparison, my books read in 2012 (I didn't read as much in 2013 due to moving) - 6/50 were 5* and 16/50 were 4*.

  • 1 - Terrible
    2 - Bad
3 - Generic - not exceptional either way
    4 - Liked it
    5 - Loved it

I think this is me, too.  The majority of my books are 4 stars, although I just came out of a run of 3 star books.

Sometimes I'll give a 3 star rating to a book that I liked because something bothered me about the book, like an irritating MC.

  • 1  - Horrible, will actively tell people how bad it was so they don't succumb to the same fate.
2  - Dislike, wish I got my time back from reading it.
3  - Not remarkable either way.  Not sorry I read it, but I will probably never think of it again.
4  - Really enjoyed, will recommend, but not flawless.
5  - OMG, AMAZEBALLS, SHOUT FROM THE ROOF TOPS.

  • 1 - Terrible, I usually give out few of these
2 - Pretty bad but not terrible
    3 - Okay, nothing profound
    4 - Liked it
5 - Loved it, amazing, again I usually give out very few of these.

I really want half star ratings already.

    1*- Cormac McCarthy
2*- really disliked it, or the book really wasn't for me
3* - fun and worth reading, but not something I'd likely read again/ really deserves a 2* rating, but I don't want the bad karma of tearing down other people's hard work
4*- something I really liked and probably gush about and push on reader friends
5* - See 4*s, plus there's a little piece of my soul in the book somehow

  • 1 - I thought it was bad, and would encourage people not to read it.
2 - Meh. I didn't think it was very good, but it has a few good points.
3 - It was okay. There were some things I really liked, but I didn't think it was great.
4 - Good. I really liked it, and I would probably recommend it, but it wasn't perfect.
5 - Fantastic. Almost no negative points, and I would consider it a classic within its genre.
