To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate?

2»

Re: To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate?

  • I was vaccinated, but now that my mom is on this whole plant based uber diet, she's trying to talk me out of vaccinating my son. I calmly explained to her that there was no way in hell I was not going to get him immunized. There's a mumps outbreak not too far from here and it's getting worse and worse. There's no reason this should be happening. None. I have an anti-vax cousin who I had to hide on fb because she would post daily rants about all the toxins in modern vaccines. Guess who I won't be bringing my kid around? It upsets me that so many people can be so ignorant on something that is so important for not just local, but global health. It's such a selfish, pig-headed choice to make.

I will say that the flu shot is different IMO, because there are so many strands of the flu that it doesn't cover. I was the only person in my household to not get a flu shot and the only one to not test positive for h1n1.

  • Agreed, I feel the flu shot is different. I think those that are high risk (and are able to get the vaccine) or those that are in close contact with susceptible people (that can't get the vaccine) should get the flu vaccine. I wouldn't force it on others.

There is some thought that if 80% of the population got vaccinated, the flu could potentially be eradicated. However, it mutates so much that others say that's just not realistic.

  • Agree with others that the flu shot is a different situation.  I've never received one, and only will if I get pregnant.

  • I am with the rest of you.  I would never choose to not vaccinate my child or myself.  I do get the flu shot every year because I used to always get the flu, but since getting the shot, haven't had it at all.  I just think that it is so irresponsible to not get vaccinated.

  • I will definitely vaccinate and I'll do it on whatever schedule the pediatrician recommends. The only one I am on the fence about is the Chickenpox vaccine. I just am torn. But I have lots of time to decide on that (if ever)

FWIW, I never got the chicken pox as a child, and ended up getting vaccinated for it in college and then got a booster when I started working in the hospital. I'm glad I did, because I just can't imagine going through that as an adult.

I don't blame you! Chickepox as an adult would suck! That is really the only one I'm undecided on.. I might take the approach of waiting and then if my kid(s) don't get it by the time they're 10, maybe get the vaccine. I really don't know though. I might just have them get it early on. Meh.. who knows!

I don't see an issue with the Chicken Pox vaccine. I think for most people, being exposed to them as a child is no big deal, a bit of discomfort and headache for the parent for a few days. There is a risk of getting Shingles later on, but to me, it's not a big enough risk.

  • It doesn't happen a lot, but chicken pox can be life-threatening to adults and children. There can be nasty complications and shingles as an adult can be dangerous, too. I don't think I want to take that chance.

  • Can I ask a question? Do you think there will ever be a time when certain vacations become mandatory?

I doubt vaccinations will b/c it infringes on certain religions.

I wish there would be mandatory vacations ;)

  • I'll admit that a few years ago I bought into the fear tactics of the anti-vaxers. Now, after doing my own research I've come to my senses and will be fully vaccinating. It's unreal to think these people would rather their child get a preventable disease than get a one-day rash from the "toxins" in a life saving vaccine. And they have no ability to comprehend the effect their actions might have on other people. It's not a "everyone parents differently" situation in the least. The outbreaks are proof of the impact the anti-vax movement is having.
