You guys. Fan fiction is a thing. She wasn't selling the her fan fiction as a "new" BDSM story starring a billionaire playboy. It's not even real FF!

I got over it in like two chapters.
But I hate fanfiction in general.  I don't have any problem with people who like it (unless the selling thing), and I get that it's a thing.  But it's a thing that I personally LOATHE.

So this was a personal preference thing, not an actual objection to there being fake fanfiction in a book, but my rating is how much I liked it, and I did NOT like reading about fanfiction.  Fanfiction that existed before the real author even had a chance to finish her story!  ::shudder::

    I get it's a thing, I just can't handle it.
I get you. I'm still sad. It was so wonderfully written!
This is why it was SO HARD to rate this book. It was brilliant and the writing was fantastic. HOWEVER... The fanfic part would get to me and I was not interested in it AT ALL. I have been thinking about my rating for two days now.
I loved everything about this book, including the fanfiction. Not because I condone it or think selling it for fame and money is right, but because it made me remember and appreciate what fanfiction is supposed to be about. Fangirl is my favorite of RR's books so far because as a writer and a basket case, I could completely relate to Cath. *Kanye shrug*

  • @84Lauren - what *did* you rate Fangirl? You keep alluding to your rating, but I didn't see what it was, and now of course I'm super curious / nosy. :)

And don't sweat moving the thread to that book - this was a really fun discussion to follow. I am sort of ambivalent about FF in general, but I will admit that I felt I had to slog through the FF excerpts in Fangirl. I just kept waiting for it to become more relevant to the story line, but it really sort of didn't. At least not in a way that I could grasp. And, being my general lack of experience with FF, but that I'm a huge fan of HP, I felt that (like someone--? said upthread) that the excerpts were actually fan fiction *about* fan fiction. Meaning, I had no experience with the original work that Cath was fan fiction'ing (what, that's not a word?), so I had to sort of glean its original focus or meaning, and it was just super distracting. When all I wanted was more Cath, Wren, Levi, etc. So, yeah, I skimmed a lot of those parts as well.

3.5, but since I HAD to pick, I rounded down to a 3.  Which is still a "liked it!"

  • I have to admit that the fanfic was not my favorite part of the book, but I still loved it so, so much. As someone who regularly binges on book series and TV shows, I could REALLY identify with Cath, and I loved reading about her passion regarding her fandom.
