I voted for Carrie. It's a good, fast read that is a good SK intro. The Stand is one of my all-time favorite books, and I think that the time allotted for SBC doesn't warrant it the kind of reading it really needs. I've read it twice, and it took me at least a month, probably more, each time.
ETA: I usually recommend his short stories for SK newbies, or people who want to read SK but don't want to take on a thousand-plus page book. Everything's Eventual is, in my opinion, the best of his short story collections.
I voted for Carrie because it's the first and only book so far that I've read of his, but it made me want to read more. It's a shorter book so it's not so bad either.
Salem's Lot was the first SK book I read, back in 7th grade. The Stand is my favorite of his, but The Shining is one of his masterpieces that isn't super long. I was going to suggest The Eyes of the Dragon, but that was published in the 80's.
So I ended up going with Carrie, The Stand will be my next Stephen King book, I just don't think I'll be able to get through it in time. Thanks for the recommendations!!!!
