So I decided for the SBC read a book I'm the 1970's, I'd pick a Stephen King book. I have never read any of his books, so which one does NBC suggest.

Re: What Stephen King book should I read?

  • Firestarter is my all-time favorite, but barring that I would say The Stand.

  • I really liked Thinner, but I think that came out in the 80's. Not counting that, I vote for The Shining.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

I voted for Carrie.  It's a good, fast read that is a good SK intro.  The Stand is one of my all-time favorite books, and I think that the time allotted for SBC doesn't warrant it the kind of reading it really needs.  I've read it twice, and it took me at least a month, probably more, each time.

ETA: I usually recommend his short stories for SK newbies, or people who want to read SK but don't want to take on a thousand-plus page book.  Everything's Eventual is, in my opinion, the best of his short story collections.

Agreed! It was a great read
  • Oops, I can read.  You wanted one written in the 70s.

  • I voted for Carrie because it's the first and only book so far that I've read of his, but it made me want to read more. It's a shorter book so it's not so bad either.

  • Salem's Lot was the first SK book I read, back in 7th grade.  The Stand is my favorite of his, but The Shining is one of his masterpieces that isn't super long.  I was going to suggest The Eyes of the Dragon, but that was published in the 80's.
  • So I ended up going with Carrie, The Stand will be my next Stephen King book, I just don't think I'll be able to get through it in time. Thanks for the recommendations!!!!
