Do you avoid certain topics in books?

From a comment made by @pacfan20 about books with cheating, it got me thinking. Do you disregard a book and not read it because it has a topic you don't like?

Re: Do you avoid certain topics in books?

  • I avoid animal books.  Even happy ones.  I don't want to cry when they die and I have a hard time getting into the head of an animal.

That said, to get Wes in the habit of a bedtime story, I'm reading him Watership Down.  Still, though, I can't get in the rabbit's head.

Other than that, I don't really discriminate.  Murder, zombies, cheating, drugs; I'll read it.

  • If I know there's going to be a pet/animal death, I won't read it. I hate it SO MUCH when they are sprung on me, but I pretty much know that if a character has a beloved pet it's going to die in some tragic way.

I generally avoid books with a teacher/student relationship in them. Gross.

  • Physical abuse I really hard for me to read. I always wanted to read Push and see the movie but it would be too much anxiety. I just end up really angry.
  • Pandemics/epidemics, that sort of thing.  I just can't.

  • Abusive relationships and rape.  Too many bad memories.
  • I find that I hate memoirs that aren't written as humor, and avoid them like the plague.  Generally, if somebody says, "you have to read This Book because it changed my whole life" I'm going to hate it.

I recently DNF a book because I saw a spoiler for the second book that after the MCs get married, the guy gets the girl's sister pregnant.  Generally, I don't like to read books about cheating in marraige, especially if it's shown in a positive light.

  • I can't read books with suicide.  Especially when the person had a history of something like Schizophrenia.
If I happen to read a book with that subject matter (there was a fantasy book I read not long ago with that subject matter), I'll probably finish it, but feel sick every time I think of it.

I don't like reading books about cheating either.  It makes me feel gross to get inside the cheater's head.

I said no too! I mean I did mention that I don't like books with cheating but I guess I do still read them. I don't necessarily have to like them and if it gets to be too much, I guess I would just stop.

  • Cheating in books doesn't bother me at all.

  • Tragic deaths of small children.  I have to completely shut myself down, I can't even begin to process it.

A book I read last year had as its main "topics" rape, drug/alcohol abuse, poverty, hate crimes and attempted murder - and yet the thing that stuck with me the most was a small part (almost in passing) describing the death of a toddler.  It KILLED me, I can't handle it.

  • Cheating and death don't bother me.

Rape and any type of abuse involving children are red flags for me.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • This has become a problem for me lately. The list of things I can't read about continues to grow. I mostly avoid apocalyptic/ dystopian type stuff now. Used to be my favourite genre, but I can't take it anymore.

I also avoid a handful of other topics:
    -terminal illness
    -death/abuse of an animal
    -death/abuse of a child

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Cheating in books where it's seen as something romantic/something the characters just can't help or control.

Dead pets, dead moms, dead sisters.

    Alzheimers.

  • I am another one who avoids animal stories, and given my profession I get recommended them all the time.

Dying animals. No thank you, Marley and Me.

    Dystopian (so over.)

Not a topic, but I'm kinda sick of series. YA seems esp bad about this lately. I mostly avoid them and am only picking up stand-alone novels.
    Can I marry them all?

    image

  • Animals, for the above reasons.  Cheating, esp. in a married environment.  It bugs me.
    image
  • Abuse/death of children. I can kind of handle it if the death has already occurred and it's been years later and the parent is grieving but it's not as recent or fresh when the book begins.

Abuse/death of animals and I hate when it's sprung on me.

I can handle pretty much anything else. Rape scenes bother me but I'll usually just skip those paragraphs or skim to the end of it.
    image
  • Child abuse or animal abuse of any kind (at least not a story that centers around it)

Dementia/Alzheimer's ( I did read Still Alice and while it is a great book, I regret reading it. It just hits too close to home for me and freaks me out.)

I try to avoid books that portray Christianity in a negative light. To each their own, but it just isn't something I would enjoy.

Hurt or dying animals. The cancer topic is really hard for me as well, but I'd still read it.

I can't really think of any topics that I find too disturbing to read about or that I would avoid reading a book over.  There are topics that are of no interest to me or I find boring and I would avoid books on those topics.  If those topics were a small part of a larger story I would still read that book.

I thought of another one.  Overly preachy religious books.

  • There aren't any topics I avoid unless it just doesn't interest me. The books I like most are usually darker.

All of these for me as well. (Though I can't bring myself to read Still Alice)

  • The only topic I deliberately avoid is when PoC, particularly Black people are portrayed in a negative, stereotypical light. I know a lot of people like books like that but I can't read them with getting all rage-y.
    image
  • Any story about a pet because you know it is going to end with the death of said pet.  NOPE.

Animal abuse.  I can't even watch the damn ASPCA commercials.

I am good with people dying, kids dying, rape, incest, carney folks, war, plague, starvation, zombies, massacres, serial killers, cults, raping, pillaging, plundering, mass destruction, drugs, cheating, tons of sex, illness, god complexes, mid-life crises, sactimoneous bullshit, religion, etc.

Can I add to this: postings of graphic pictures of animal abuse on Facebook?  I know they are there to promote awareness and with good intention, but man.  I've seen some really graphic/disturbing photos lately.  At least give us the option of clicking to see.

I used to be right with you on this one, but I just finished Larry's Party by Carol Shields, and I actually enjoyed it! (I didn't know what it was about going in. I bought it at a used book sale because the friend I was with loves Carol Shields.)
