Time to Read?

I was looking over the post of what you read in April. How do you all find o much time to read? I'm impressed and semi jealous.

Re: Time to Read?

  • I read at night, and often sacrifice sleep for reading. I also work part time. I almost never read during the day, but I'm able to get done all the household stuff during the day so I have time after dinner for myself. I also have no kids.

  • I only work part time and my job is incredibly boring so I read a lot at work. I try to get all my housework done during the day (or neglect it entirely, lets be honest) so that when my daughter goes to bed I get a couple of hours of reading in before I go to bed. My husband knows that "I think you should play video games tonight!" is code for "leave me alone, I'm in the middle of a good book".

  • I listen to audiobooks a lot.  I listen in the car, while I take the dog for a walk, and while I do chores around the house.  I also read books instead of watching TV most nights.
  • Most of us read as much or as little as we do because of how we prioritize reading.  In January - March I am extremely busy with work, and therefore sleep takes priority over reading. Later in the year, not so much.

I think too if you're interested in adding to your reading time, take advantage of 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there. Many of people don't read because if they don't have 30 minutes or an hour to devote to it its not worth it.  But I try to take advantage of every opportunity.  Audibooks in the car, and kindle or nook books on my phone so if I'm somewhere waiting on someone or there's just some short down time I can get 10 minutes or so in here and there.  It makes a huge difference.

  • I work only three days per week and don't have kids (or a husband anymore), so I have plenty of time to read. I also always read at the gym when I am on the elliptical/treadmill/arc trainer. And I often go out to lunch at Panera or Saladworks and bring my Nook and read through my lunch. I also regularly have a date with a grande chai and my Nook at B&N or Sbx. I agree that for a lot of it is has to do with prioritization.

  • It's something that's very important to me so I make time for it.  I listen to audiobooks on my way to and from work.  I read on my phone at lunch.  I read at home while the TV is on.  I've occasionally read at sporting events that I'm not interested in but attend because my husband's into them.

I choose to make reading a priority in my life.

  • Ditto everyone else.  I make time.  I read in lulls at work, I rarely watch tv, and I stay up late at night.  Personally, I don't have kids and I only work part time, but I don't read more now than I did when working full time and I know plenty of moms who read as much or more than I do.  It's all a matter of how much you want to do it.

  • Same as everyone else - I make time for it.  I work part time and on my days home I read while my son naps.  I read when I'm on the elliptical at the gym.  I definitely stay up too late reading.  I also read while my husband watches shows that I'm not interested in.  I don't have a very long commute but I've been thinking about adding audiobooks as well - even if I'm only in the car for 15-20 minutes, that's better than nothing!

I read before I go to sleep every night, when I'm on the elliptical working out, and listen to a lot of audiobooks on my commute. Sometimes I need this headspace to zone out or reflect, but other times, especially when I'm super into a book, I also read while I'm doing my hair and makeup in the morning. Days when I'm home with my boys, I often read while they watch cartoons during breakfast and when I'm putting my oldest down for a nap.

  • I mostly read at night instead of watching tv or at the gym if I'm doing cardio.  I also read on my phone when I'm walking around, sitting in a waiting room, in the car (when I'm not driving) etc.

I read at all available opportunities. When life gets busy I sail through audiobooks. I make reading happen.
  • I don't ever feel like I have time either. I try to make time to read but grad school and working interferes with that. I would say find out how much time you are spending on the computer or TV and use that time for reading instead. Or you know, how much time you are spending cleaning and folding laundry.  ;)

  • I have thought about audio books but I carpool with my husband and that would drive him insane. I always have a book with me, I just am somehow extremely lucky if I make it through 3-4 books a month.
  • My kindle goes everywhere with me. I make sure it is in my purse when I go anywhere. I am more likely to forget my phone than my kindle. If I am reading a real book it goes with me too, that is when my purse is really heavy.

People also read at different speeds. I spend quite a bit of time reading on the way to/from work and in the evenings, but I'm a slow reader, so even when I'm on vacation and spend (literally) all day reading, my book counts are still lower than a lot of people on this board. And there's nothing wrong with that.

  • Reading is important to me, so I make time for it. Usually after DS goes to sleep, during my lunch breaks, and while sitting in boring meetings at work. Whenever I can fit it in really.

I always try to keep in mind that comparing myself to others isn't necessary. Honestly, I read quite a few books this month, but they have been easy, quick reads. Nothing I would brag about.

    Wear earphones and listen.

Make him drive.  Leaves you free to read, you don't need an audiobook.

  • It's definitely about prioritizing. I have certain TV shows that I love to watch, but they aren't on every single night. Some of my nights are spent watching my shows and others are spent with a book. Reading is something I do to unwind and relax, so I'm more likely to skip some housework for reading when I'm really stressed out.

When I was younger, my idea of time for reading was at least an hour. Now that I work full-time and have two kids, I consider time for reading to be any amount. I might only get 15 minutes in one day, but it's better than nothing.

I would love to read a ton of books, but for me it's quality over quantity. I'd rather take my time and enjoy books than fly through them just to hit a number.

  • I have stopped watching a ton of tv.  When I do watch it, it's on the DVR so I can watch whenever I want.  I read when I eat, I read a little before bedtime, and I read at my lunch.  I work full time and have a six year old, so sometimes it's hard.  I can't do audiobooks because I hear "mommy" "mommy I have to tell you something..." along with tons of questions, but any free time I have by myself, I am reading...because it makes me feel so much better to read than to watch TV all the time.  (except when I'm playing Candy Crush...that dang thing gets me sometimes.)
