My husband just sent me an email saying someone just signed up for their summer camp and her name is La-a....wait for it, wait for it! It is pronounced “La Dash uh”. COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should see some of the names that I'm seeing on applications these days. Everyone wants to be "you-neek" but no one takes the time to consider what happens when kids grow up and have to go out into the working world.

Yeah, I've heard that as a urban myth type story ("The dash don't be silent!"), but I never thought it was real. Naveah is another one - I think it's in the top 25 or 30 names now, but I always thought it was just a joke and people didn't actually name their children that (heaven spelled backwards).

Someone should tell parents that all those rap stars with messed up names - those aren't their real life names.

My friend's granddaughter is named Naveah. They call her Veah as a nickname.

So is it only certain names that get a "WTF?" or all odd names?
Odd spellings can even cause eye rolls.

People have questioned the spelling of my Ashlee's name and I don't think that is that bad! Others are worse!

Note to the world: If 9 out of 10 people pronounce your kid's name incorrectly, then chances are, you gave your kid a stoopid name. (And that 10th person, probably has a kid with a stoopid name).

My neighbor has a little boy named Altair. It's pronounced Al-tie-ear. While I appreciate the literary reference, I'm still scratching my head. J and I just call him Atreyu, a la Never-ending Story because would couldn't get his name right for the longest time.

Yep. It used to be an urban legend but people heard about it and now its actually a thing. I personally turned in a birth certificate with that name on it so unless they changed it with the SSA after the fact I know there is at least one out there

I am so glad the "Nevaeh" trend seems to have passed. I was soooo annoyed by that. And no, Navaeh or Naveah is not Heaven spelled backwards. If they are going to use the stupid name they need to at least do it right, lol.

I could go on and on about names

That's how I would've pronounced it, knowing absolutely nothing about it and having never seen the word before in my life.

While we're on the topic, DH and I are considering naming this baby Bode or Bodhi (either way, pronounced Bo-dee, like Bode Miller the skiier, just unsure of the spelling). I'm afraid that it is too prone to mispronouniation, and kid is going to spend his whole life correcting people. Thoughts? Be honest.

I would not pronounce the name Bode as Bo-dee. I would pronounce the name Bodhi as Bo-dee.

It's one thing to have an unusual name but some of the spellings just for the sake of being special are out of control. For example, what I don't understand lately is substituting y for i or leigh for ly when the original spelling makes more sense for pronunciation.

Susie, if you like Bode, go with the first spelling (Bode Miller is hot, for one). It'd be a different story if you were considering "Bodey." Bodhi might be traditional elsewhere, but I'd see it as Bode-high or Bode-eye.

However, I'm sure there are plenty of people who would pronounce it like "mode" so he would probably be correcting people his entire life. Not a huge deal but annoying (says the one constantly having her name mispronounced).

That's me. I look at it and see Bode as in Mode.

My daughter ends in leigh but it wasn't to be special or different it was because we couldn't decide on a spelling. Certain names like Lemonjello (la mongelo) and orangejello (or angelo) are where it gets crazy...I don't mind a different spelt name but the names that people "make up" are what is getting out of hand.
