It's one thing to have an unusual name but some of the spellings just for the sake of being special are out of control. For example, what I don't understand lately is substituting y for i or leigh for ly when the original spelling makes more sense for pronunciation. Susie, if you like Bode, go with the first spelling (Bode Miller is hot, for one). It'd be a different story if you were considering "Bodey." Bodhi might be traditional elsewhere, but I'd see it as Bode-high or Bode-eye.
My daughter ends in leigh but it wasn't to be special or different it was because we couldn't decide on a spelling. Certain names like Lemonjello (la mongelo) and orangejello (or angelo) are where it gets crazy...I don't mind a different spelt name but the names that people "make up" are what is getting out of hand.
I could have sworn you were against the conventional way of spelling it. Am I imagining this?

I wanted IE but A didn't like it and he was dead set against EY or Y. I was against the name Allison

  • I would pronounce Bode as (Bod-ee) but that's because I love Bode Miller and don't think twice about his name.
This is DH and I, too, but I know that not everyone is familiar with the name, and I don't want to burden the kid with a name that he always has to correct people on.  Bodhi is more spiritual, and I thought easier to pronounce, but I can see where people might say it with the long i sound.  DH doesn't like that spelling as much anyway.

Thanks for the input, everyone!  Naming boys is hard.
  • I tried to convince DH that if we had a boy we should name him Akiva, I was only half kidding ;).

  • As someone with a very urban name who's daughter has a name that ends in "ly", I think I'm going to recuse myself from this conversation.

My neighbor has a little boy named Altair. It's pronounced Al-tie-ear.  While I appreciate the literary reference, I'm still scratching my head.  J and I just call him Atreyu, a la Never-ending Story because would couldn't get his name right for the longest time.
Altair is the name of one of the planets in Anne McCaffrey's Talent series.  I say it Al Tare in my head.

That's how I would've pronounced it, knowing absolutely nothing about it and having never seen the word before in my life.

While we're on the topic, DH and I are considering naming this baby Bode or Bodhi (either way, pronounced Bo-dee, like Bode Miller the skiier, just unsure of the spelling).  I'm afraid that it is too prone to mispronouniation, and kid is going to spend his whole life correcting people.  Thoughts?  Be honest.
I like Bode.  I'm familiar with it so it doesn't seem weird to me.

I don't think I would have ever guessed that Ahlius = Elias.

I asked her why she picked that name and that's what she said. Actually she said "we wanted it to have a unique spelling."

I wish we could come up with a list of 10!  For DD, we had 6 or 7 names picked out, and didn't decide until a couple of hours after she was born.  We want to do the same thing for baby boy, but so far we only have 3, and I'm doubting Bode.  We just can't seem to agree.  Our current first choice is Miles, and even then, DH likes it better spelled with a Y, and I hate it with a Y.

What's on your list, if you don't mind sharing?

I like it. I heard Bodhi and my first thought was the Dawson's Creek character. Its funny but coming up with a boy's name that we liked was far easier than coming up with DD's name.

DH shot me down when I suggested Ewan, but I completely love it.  I really like a lot of those, actually.  Ours are Bode, Miles and Eli.  Noah was on the list, but when last years SSA list came out with Noah as #1 in the country, DH vetoed it, even though it's like #12 in our state.

  • I'm obviously hugely in the minority, but I am totally unfazed by baby names.  I'm in favor of naming your kid whatever you feel like naming them and spelling it however you want to spell it and I'll adjust accordingly if I'm mispronouncing it.

Before some of these become urban legend, distilled from the department of Social Security:

I'm really hoping that the 16 girls named Abcde were just given a placeholder and will eventually be renamed. How do you even pronounce that?!

@gillic I think I would just call her Betty. Short for alphabet.

The younique spellings and backwardsnmes are crazy. But I prefer them to stupid names. My sister was going to call her kid, if it was a girl, elephant. Well, actually it was Ella and last name sounds like phant. I can imagine the teasing the poor child would have endured.
  • I did some work for a middle school in my area this year and felt terrible because I couldn't pronounce half of the names on the class list. One girl was named Aeslynn and it took me four weeks to stop calling her Ashlyn.

Although, there was a girl named Topanga and that made me ridiculously happy. #BMWforever
