@gillic I think I would just call her Betty. Short for alphabet. The younique spellings and backwardsnmes are crazy. But I prefer them to stupid names. My sister was going to call her kid, if it was a girl, elephant. Well, actually it was Ella and last name sounds like phant. I can imagine the teasing the poor child would have endured.
There were actually 8 girls named Yunique last year. *facepalm* Plus 14 Euniques (Does that look like 'eunich' to anyone else?)

There's some parody hipster website with a kid name Quinoa, but I actually have a student named Kale.
@Young_Love Is it pronounced like the vegetable, or something else like "Kah-LAY"?
    Like the leafy green.

    I also have a Ckye.

@SusieBW Naming boys is really hard! Baby Boy is due in three weeks and our short list still contains like 10 names!
I wish we could come up with a list of 10!  For DD, we had 6 or 7 names picked out, and didn't decide until a couple of hours after she was born.  We want to do the same thing for baby boy, but so far we only have 3, and I'm doubting Bode.  We just can't seem to agree.  Our current first choice is Miles, and even then, DH likes it better spelled with a Y, and I hate it with a Y.

What's on your list, if you don't mind sharing?
I think boys' names with Ys make them seem feminine. Don't use the Y.
    Can I marry them all?

  • I used to work as an RN on a Mother Baby unit and we did have a mother name her child that. One of our nurses called the baby Laia and the mom got mad and yelled that "the dash ain't silent".

We also have another mother name her daughter Denim. Like the jeans.

  • I'm super over names that rhyme with Aidan.  You can call any variation of that (kaden, jaden, braden, etc) and a kid will probably answer.

My sister named my youngest niece Adysen because "spelling it -son makes it such and such's son," to which I countered "I've never met a man named Addi."

    She didn't like that.

I'm really hoping that the 16 girls named Abcde were just given a placeholder and will eventually be renamed. How do you even pronounce that?!
@GilliC unfortunately, its a real name. Pronounced Ab-sid-ee.

o_O What???? Is that so he can get a domain name that isn't taken?

For the most part I don't care what people name their children, but I do roll my eyes at some weird spellings. Apple? Fine. Northwest? Whatever if it's your favorite direction. McKhaighlah, though, no thanks.

  • I work in the transfer center/admissions office of a pretty big hospital and many days when we register the newborns I want to go up and plead with the parents to reconsider what they're doing to their child. My favorite is Shithead (pronounced sha-theed). Also, if you can't decide, please don't throw 6 names together. Imagine how hard it's going to be on your 5 year old to learn how to write that long azz name at the top of his kindergarden papers.

My neighbor has a little boy named Altair. It's pronounced Al-tie-ear.  While I appreciate the literary reference, I'm still scratching my head.  J and I just call him Atreyu, a la Never-ending Story because would couldn't get his name right for the longest time.

It makes me so sad that people seem to put more effort into their dog's name than their child's.

DH has an Atreyu t-shirt (because of the N-E S connection) but isn't a fan of the band.
