When you change your address with the USPS online you also get some coupons, including a 10% Home Depot coupon.  Save that for a larger purchase like appliances or patio furniture...
    Awesome tip!  Thanks!
I remember getting one for Best Buy too- which is where we actually got our appliances from- definate great way to save some money!

  • Oh, one more thing I just thought of- if you have an Ace Hardware near you, watch them for their 4th of July sale on different stuff. They also do free pints or quarts of paints every now and then which is awesome for an accent wall/niche or whatever. And I'm sure they would tint it later too.

@hoffse‌ So I haven't posted much in here but I wanted to recommend the Marque line of paints at Home Depot. We painted the exterior trim on our house this week and it was awesome to work with. More expensive than the other paint but we only had to to one coat. Saved us time and money on extra paint! Enjoy!
Thanks!  Is that by Behr?  We were looking at their various options this weekend.  My apartment is full of paint chips :)
I love Behr- I used different paints in I swear every room based on what was on sale, and I liked Behr the best. Plus the price is great comparing to some other brands.

    Congrats to the new homeowners!

Be prepared for some massive credit card bills as you start purchasing the odds and ends that you will need.  We just got our bill *gulp*...  Seeing it all there in black and white (even thought we have the money to pay it off in full) is a little nerve-wracking.
We're 1 year post close and we are STILL spending like crazy.  My DH just asked me the other day if our credit card is going to get a break.  hahahaha.

Yes, I am definitely on guard for this.  We're going to need to get a dish washer right away (after closing of course), but I'm going to put off other purchases until we're comfortably settled.  This will mean a couple of empty rooms for a little while, but hey, no worries.  We're actually going to be gaining appliances in the deal since the house comes with two fridges (we have one) and a washer and dryer (which we already own and really like).  I'm planning to sell some of the extras to hopefully get new couches down the line.  I asked if the homeowner would leave the lawn mower on a lark and she said yes, which I'm pumped about!

@hoffse one unexpected expense that a friend just warned me about is that if the home has oil heat, you'll have to pay for any oil left in the tank at closing.  I'd love to hear other unexpected expenses from the seasoned homeowners around too!
We didn't, but the seller was a ditz and I guess her agent or lawyer wasn't on top of it either.

Our biggest unexpected expense (which we haven't fixed yet!) will be a for a new deck.  We thought there was a "little" dry rot and we could just replace the boards.  We found out the whole thing is rotted underneath and we'll need a new deck.  For what we want (capped composite deck with steel frame) , it's 35k.  We're postponing that until next year.

Everything else, thank goodness, was a known expense.

Congratulations! Super excited for you guys. Hope the inspection goes well!

Another thing to keep in mind if you guys are planning on doing any landscaping or anything, if you sign up for Home Depot's Gardening newsletter they'll email you coupons for like $10 off and stuff like that. I'm always getting coupons from them in my email.
Oh man I am loving these tips!
I think I got 10% coupons from Target, Wayfair, Home Depot and Overstock along with offers available from a few other places I wasn't interested in.

With previous moves I received a 20% off your WHOLE PURCHASE from Bed Bath & Beyond a few weeks after moving, but I haven't gotten one yet.  Keep an eye out.  :)
Pretty sure it was Lowe's that took our expired coupons.  Wonder if Home Depot would too.  Sometimes those coupons come in fast and furious with short expirations, so I found it never hurts to ask if you find yourself with an expired one.
