Re: SCOTUS BC/Hobby Lobby decision

  • Really? It's a 49 page option. Who's had time to read it yet? I've only gotten through the syllabus.
    Married 2011.
    Baby Boy 2015.
  • Yes it is and it's a shame that women don't understand it. It's a slow whittling away of women's rights on the basis of religion.

HL is a for-profit company who has invested its 401k heavily into these "abortion pill" companies. Their religion is money. The SC allowed bullshit science to be argued and then ruled based upon it. Preventing ovulation and/or implantation is not abortion.

I've been reading SCOTUSblog and the dissenting opinion.

  • @Aimothy‌ that's amazing! This decision is disgusting.
  • It hurts my heart that there are women out there who support their decision. This ruling sets a frightful precedence for the future, and I'm sad that women aren't allowed to be in control of decisions about their bodies.

Not believing in abortion isn't a "war on women".
If you don't 'believe in abortion' then you have issues, because it is a real thing.  It's not the Easter Bunny, it does happen.  Not supporting the concept is directly infringing on the rights of women, so it falls in to the war on women category.

  • Exactly, Lucky. When I started BC it wasn't because I was sexually active and needed to prevent pregnancy it was for health reasons.

If this were Viagra we were talking about it would be a whole other conversation and that's the problem.
  • Women are sexual deviants. That's a fact.

Among the BC options they don't want to support are types that prevent implantation. I don't see the difference between preventing ovulation with one type of BC and preventing a fertilized egg from implanting (which can happen naturally anyway!) with another type of BC. Both prevent a viable pregnancy from ever even starting, so why fight so hard to not provide one type over another?

The reason they're fighting not covering this is because in their belief it is considered a baby at conception. By not allowing the fertilized egg to implant, you are killing that baby.
To where BC is changing your hormones and not allowing your body to ovulate.  That is not considered an abortion or death because there is no conception.

  • @brij2006‌

Here we go again. Beliefs are not facts. The fact is that a bundle of cells is not a person. Not allowing that bundle of cells to implant is not abortion. That's not my belief, it's science.

There are tons of religions that have beliefs that fly counter to science. For instance, Jehovah's witnesses don't "believe" in blood transfusions. Should companies run by JWs be allowed to exempt blood transfusions from insurance coverage?

According to this ruling, NO, b/c it only relates to this one exemption by this one family's religion. Not the religion as a whole, mind you, but this family's interpretation of the religion. I can't believe that people don't see how this is discriminatory.

  • one corporations religious beliefs

This is the most appalling part to me. A corporation cannot have religious beliefs. It cannot be baptized, it cannot take communion, it cannot confess sins, etc. It's the slippery slope that was reopened by the Citizen's United decision.

  • As much as I do not believe that a fertilized egg should have personhood status I don't think it is a fact based on science.

My thoughts are that a business owner can run their business in the way they want to.  If that means they're closed on Sundays for religious reasons and do not provide their employees with certain health insurance coverage, then that is the way they choose to run their business.  It is that employees choice whether or not they want to work for them, and the consumers' choice whether or not they shop there.

My employer does this same exact thing.  They have chosen to not cover IUD's, morning after pill, or abortions.  However, they provide my insurance for me.  If I didn't like it, then I could work elsewhere or purchase insurance myself outside of my employer.  It is my choice to work for a company who runs their business that way, and it is the owners choice on how he chooses to run it.

  • So you believe the ACA infringed upon the corporation's right as a person to practice its religion?

What about people who can't find employment elsewhere? What if other companies follow suit? Apparently 90% of corporations are closely held. What if other procedures or medications aren't covered? Can something not be covered just based on a belief that it causes abortions or does it have to be based on facts? Could vaccines not be covered? Blood transfusions? Psychiatric medications? There are religions with objections to all of those.

I could hold you for a million years

  • Aren't the discriminating by forcing their heathen non-beliefs on the business owner?

Thank God. I didn't even read most of what you wrote and I was still annoyed. In fact, every time I see your little picture I'm annoyed. Go away.
