Re: Hey ladies... How ya been?

  • Sounds like you guys are well on your way! :D

When Zoey first came home with us, she'd cry in her crate, too. I think she missed her litter mates. You usually don't want to acknowledge them at all when they do that. It can be hard to listen to, but usually if you ignore it, they'll understand crying isn't the way to get your attention. Over the weekend will be a great time to work on that! You can put her in there, leave the room for a minute, come back and let her out (if she's quiet). And work up to longer periods. Always coming back into sight and acknowledging her when she's been quiet for a about 5-10 seconds at least. It's a reward for them, so you want to give them the reward fast when they're doing what you want.

In the meantime, just try to let neighbors know you have a new pup and are working on training, but you're sorry for any barking/crying while she settles in.

This page was a HUGE help to me on all sorts of training stuff when we got Zoey.

  •  I got mine from a breeder as well.  Their first time with these dogs.  All of the litter had beautiful pups.  Wonderful people who raised them, great place they were held. I looked at a few places and didn't get one until I found a breeder I liked.

Thanks Lucky, I have him crate trained too.  :)  Working pretty well thus far.  Our main thing is his biting!!! OUCH!  He doesn't always do it, but he gets excited, starts barking sometimes and starts to bite. We try to distract his attention and I will give him something he is supposed to bite and chew on.  Works sometimes, but sometimes he will come after me.  Lol, so I will take myself away for a few.  Then come back. He really doesn't get that he needs to stop and be gentle.  Everything else with him is going pretty well.  So we are stuck.  I have had puppies before and never really had the biting this bad.  So hmmm, we don't know the answers.  He will just be turning 12 weeks this weekend..

  • Keep doing what you're doing @cloudymeatballs12! Walking away when biting happens is a good move, it just might take a while to sink in that biting/teeth = no more play/attention. Replacing your hand/etc with a toy they CAN bite on is good, too. A nice loud yelp/ow can help as well.
