Re: could you live off of $350/week

  • Yes it can be done it's no fun but shop a good will don't buy things you don't need you will have to stop eating out that's a waste we eat out 2times a month and we look for a deal. Cut bills buy being thifty phone don't need get a cheap cell no home get basic basic cable and joins garage sale sites to find deal Obama is going to destroy us all so hang on enjoy the ride and you will be amazed how bad things will get soon this is just the start
  • I would love to have $350 per week spending money after bills are paid! We spend $60 per week on groceries, maybe $20 per week on gas, and no more than $50-75 per week on eating out/entertainment.
  • I live in a  HCOL area.

Outside of gas I spend about $100/week on groceries.

DH has spent $10 on a lightbulb and $20 on car parts this week.  So yes, we could absolutely live off $350/week.
I will love you for you, not for what you have done or for what you will become
  • Sure, though we would have to do somewhat fewer home improvement projects probably.
  • Easily done.
Groceries should go with household bills as it is a necessity.
$20 for a beer and hoagie?  MAKE your own at home and bring own beverage from home.
STOP eating out weekly and choose less costly places when you do go out
Clothing - you can buy end of season sales, consignment shops etc and get quality items for very little.

Basically you fund necessities and then prioritize wants. The problem being that many people think their wants are necessities  - and they are not.

  • I know this post is super old but it makes me giggle. $350 a week not counting bills? I'm probably one of the least-frugal people on the board and we're still well under that, including gas for H's long commute.

Yes...absolutely!  We spend less than that on gas, groceries, eating out per week.  This is all with 3 kids.

  • @steelspine We try not to bump old posts like this because those people aren't here any more. Having said that, this is kind of a fun one.

I agree with Xstatic3333- not including bills and gas, of course we can stay under $350. I think the OP is in a different league than I am though- I don't care what brand of shoes they were, or that they were on 'sale' I would NEVER and have NEVER spent that kind of cash on shoes- especially if we were trying to budget. Now I have spent that kind of cash on a purse, so you could say that's similar, but if we are cutting our budget then there is no question that we can live on under $350 a week.

  • Weekly, we spend $100 on groceries, $40 on date night.  Gas is about $50 a month since we don't drive much.  I don't even know how to spend $350 a week!

ROFLOL, I came in ready to say we'd have to rent a one bedroom, but we could probably swing it. And you're asking if you can still buy shoes every week. For two adults you should easily be able to stay under $100. We budget $250 a week for all of that, including hardware and paint, for four people. (yes, my kids have a paint budget).
I had this same reaction.  I read the title and initially thought you meant everything.
  • I could not b/c of groceries.  We spend about 750.00 a month on groceries.  I realize this is high but there are four of us and my two boys are very active, play numerous sports and eat A LOT.  We also tend to have their friends over at least once or twice a month (sometimes more) and have to feed them.  We rarely eat out.  Also if the kids sports are bulked in that category we could not.  Really aside from the mortgage most of our money goes towards food and sports.
