What is everyone doing tonight?

Dh and I worked a wedding today. He is doing videography and our group played the ceremony and cocktail hour. I'm waiting for him to finish up. Can't complain though because we got fed dinner and cake. It was so yummy!

  • H and I were at a BBQ from 5-9 with people from work. We spent 5 bucks cheap beer for him.  It was a ton of fun.
It sparked a huge conversation about TTC when we got home because I ended up spending the majority of that time with Hs bosses young daughters. I am getting impatient.

I'm sure you are :)  I don't know how you do it.  We were only married 9 months before I was pregnant, but we were a little older than you.

Well we have looked more into the ins. costs and apparently according to HR the last time somebody had to utilize their max OOP was for a helicopter ride from the woods in northern Maine two years ago. In three years 10 babies born and a few preemie/NICU stays and it was all within the normal deductible.
We are only saving half the Max OOP now. That puts us at TTC Jan 2016 which is 6 months earlier then planned! I'm so antsy. Classes start in three weeks and I am excited for the distraction.

really?  It's pretty easy to hit the max OOP when you have a baby.  I hit my max OOP with DD.  It was $7500.  Our 2nd baby will be cheaper because our deductible is lower now.  The max will be $4500 next time.  The cost of my c/section before insurance took their portion was $31,000.  That didn't include 9 months of OB visits.

Coverage is pretty complete with our Ins. apparently. Of the 4 moms who gave birth last school year three had c sections and none of them had to go beyond the deductible.

  • I love our new insurance.  DH is going to physical therapy for a couple slipped discs in his back and we are only having to pay a $5 copy each visit.  We've never had insurance this lovely :)  I've already hit my ded.  I feel like I should just go to the chiro cause I can.

  • Lazing around playing Pogo, lol.  Sunday is the ONLY day I don't have any work to do, so I am always really lazy on it :).
  • @alyssa32713 H and I had nearly the same discussion yesterday (we spent a good part of the weekend at a good friend's LO's 4th birthday party). I'm getting inpatient, but our goals seem to be shifting...we had discusses wanting to be CC-debt free before TTC (met that goal in the spring). Then I said that it would be nice to have a guest room finished in the basement before we turn the existing guest room into a nursery (my whole family lives 3+ hours away....so if we would want any help from my mom, it makes sense to have a place for her to sleep :) ). As far as I've budgeted out, leaving room for a few surprises, we can probably have that paid for by early spring 2015..we've been told it's a 2-3 week construction project, so we could start TTC as soon as we have the $$ to pay for that project. Then we have several of my good friends getting married next summer...so if we're waiting until spring, would it be logical to wait until after those weddings (best friend from HS, one of my best friends from college)?
I'm getting antsy...my doctor also took me off BC for other reasons...so I think my hormones are partially to blame :/

My biggest fear is that now that we are so MM driven I am never going to feel financially ready. I had a moment this morning when I walked by my car that I thought it would be great to have that car fund all saved up before TTC. But that adds another 6 months to the timeline.

I know I am ready now and I know there is never a perfect time but I really hope that I hit a point where I know it is okay to start because all of the uncertainty I feel is wearing on me.

I wouldn't wait for someones wedding. Haha

I'm starting to feel the pull stronger, too.  I've found myself lurking TB a fair bit, which is probably a bad habit.  I've crunched the numbers and we need to have the cars paid off to afford full-time daycare, which, unless we find a good in-home, will be significantly more than our mortgage.  I think we can have this done by the end of 2015, maybe even sooner if we buckle down.  Living on a daycare budget while I'm pregnant will be more than enough to save for our OOP max, baby essentials, and a baby e-fund.  At that point, having my SL paid off too would be nice.  Its likely we won't need full-time daycare (my mom has expressed interest in "a couple of days") but I don't want to TTC until we could do it if we had to.  I've set a couple of other not-too-pricy goals for myself, running a half-marathon and getting my dive instructor certification, to keep myself distracted until it's a better time.  I'd love to do another big trip first too, but that's becoming less of a priority as time goes on.  We hung out with our friends who have a baby and a toddler the other day and I was just in love, though I wouldn't want two-under-two myself.

And I second Alyssa, no way I'd wait for somebody's wedding.  There were a couple of very pregnant people at our wedding and they still had fun:)

At this point I think its more just waiting so that we're fairly certain we can attend those weddings...if we started TTC in the next 2-3 months and happened to have immediate success weddings next July/August out of state might be hard to get to ;) I'm willing to sport a bump to those weddings, but I don't want to risk not being able to attend.

We have our e-fund in an OK place.  I have not done any research into what day care costs in this area are, my boss would be open to me working 4 longer days instead of 5 days a week, and H doesn't have to be at work until noon on mondays, so at the moment the most daycare we'd have to pay for regularly is 3.5 days.

  • I'm totally with you on the being so MM driven we may never get to it. One of H's student loans just had one of the income-based repayment or something expire on it, monthly payments went from $136/month to $495/month....it freaked me out over the weekend.  I try really hard to let H deal with his debt the way he feels comfortable, but this one has me really freaked out.

That makes sense re. the weddings :)

I was shocked and appalled by daycare costs.  For some reason most places don't put them online, but even though I'm out of HCOL Massachusetts now it looks like we'll be looking at $1,200-$1,500 a week for full time infant care at a center.  In-homes tend to be around $1,000.  I make just barely enough that being a SAHM wouldn't make sense, and it's not something I've ever really wanted to do anyway.  I know you're in New England too, but hopefully your state will be a little more painless.  3.5 days should really help!
  • I don't think there can ever be a right financial time to have a kid.  We want the 5 year age gap so that's why we are waiting for #2.  We recently decided to TTC again for #2 in the fall of 2015.  I will be 35 and if everything goes as planned, I will be 36 at the birth….that's the oldest I want to have a kid and then we will be 2 and done!

The reason we decided because I talked to DH about it a couple weeks ago.  He has talked to 9-10 banks for financing to build his own studio.  He pretty much got approved last week :)  Hopefully the studio will be up and running by the summer and then we can TTC in the fall.

To be honest, it's really hard to be a SAHM especially at age 3.  It drives me bonkers sometimes, but we save SO much $$ by not having to pay for daycare so I feel very lucky about our situation.

in home day care is cheaper than a day care center.  I know from some of my friends that for 1 child it can be as much as a mortgage payment.  we can't even afford that.

We don't live in a HCOL area, but we pay about $1,700/month for 2 kids full time (5 days a week) at a day care center. They provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks as well as diapers and wipes. We like the centers because they have more requirements than a home day care and they provide the girls with a school structure. They also have a wrap-around pre-K program that DD#1 will start in the fall. She attends pre-K at the center with a state certified teacher in the morning, has lunch, nap, and has free play in the afternoon.

there have actually been 2 children who have died at in home daycare centers in our area in the last year, that scares me. I think I've had $700-1000 in my head for monthly daycare costs...maybe that's realistic. we could actually do that right now, but the puppy would have to give-up agility training for a little while.

You can also just call around to daycare centers and Google "in home daycares" in your area.

FWIW we live in a LCOL area and the center I love is $950/month.  The in home ones are around $600/month.  That even seemed like a lot to me.  We were really hoping to be at $500/month, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

  • Actually rates for the daycare service where I work were really easy to find! and they're pay-based, so I assume that's just based on my pay, not our household income? if that's the case it's $280 bi-weekly, if not and its based on household income we're looking at $430 bi-weekly...that seems pretty good?

these weren't SIDs deaths...one child was strangled by her own jacket playing outside when she got caught by a tree branch and no one was outside watching her, I believe the other was shaken baby syndrome...both daycare centers were shut-down, one provider was arrested...still scares me that there were two incidents at two separate places within a year.

I think $700-$1000 is very realistic.  I also think that, as scary as stories like those are, there are probably many EXCELLENT in-homes if you decide to go that route.  I'm budgeting for a center for a few reasons:

    1) I like the predictability of knowing 7-6 on school days are covered regardless of teacher illnesses or vacations.
    2) I used to work in a great center and really loved the educational experiences it provided.  Everything was very well thought-out and planned for the kids' benefit (in-homes could provide this too).
    3) I know when I get pregnant I'll want to nail down childcare right away, and in-homes don't always let you book your spot that far in advance
    4) In the pre-TTC budgeting stage, in-homes are just kind of tough to find information about.

That said, once I'm actually pregnant I'll definitely look into in-homes too and if we find one that fits our needs, I'll be glad to pay less.

Actually rates for the daycare service where I work were really easy to find! and they're pay-based, so I assume that's just based on my pay, not our household income? if that's the case it's $280 bi-weekly, if not and its based on household income we're looking at $430 bi-weekly...that seems pretty good?
Oh wow!  These things vary so much by state.  That's awesome! I'd imagine it's household income, but $430 bi-weekly still seems very good.
  • For the first two years the daycare center on campus here is $175 a week. That is just over $9k and I only work a school year job and only make about $7k. We would have to pay year round to hold the spot so it would cost an additional $2k out of H's paychecks to cover daycare for the year. I want to stay home anyways so I am pleased we can't really afford daycare. Haha.
