Anti-Anxiety/Anti-Depressants & Pregnancy....

I am currently taking Effexor XR (an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant medication).  I have been taking it for approximately 11 years (some small breaks in that time to try others, try without, etc.)  Overall I've come to the conclusion I need it and it will be a lifelong medication at this time.

I want to try and get pregnant soon.  Went to Dr. today - met with NP, she said I cannot take ANY anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medication while preg as the Dr won't prescribe any due to possible risks to the fetus.  I was shocked.  I said what do people do then? She said 'suffer through it' more or less.  She said the Dr. 110% will not prescribe any of these meds while pregnant ..... I don't know what to do .... I really can NOT go without them, I don't function ..

Has anyone taken an anti-anxiety or anti-depressant while pregnant?

I plan to do some research and have a 1:1 with my Dr. but in the meantime, I'd appreciate any feedback please :)

  • Is this a NP for a PCP or an OB?

"I DO NOT love that you think so many things revolve around you.  I know you're bitter.  I get it.  But I'm over your feelings." The best person on the internet ever!
  • Definitely find an OB and discuss this with them.  Many will be fine with you staying on the medication or prescribe you something similar that may be safer for pregnancy.

I was on anti-anxiety medication after our loss, and my OB did not have me get off of them when we got pregnant this time.  When the medication was prescribed, they made sure it was TTC and pregnancy safe since we weren't sure when we would begin to TTC again after the loss.
However, I worked hard with therapy to no longer need the medication, and was able to get off of it after 1st trimester. At any point in the pregnancy they will allow me to get back on it if I need to.
One thing they stressed was that it's safer to have mom on the medication and mentally stable and safe, than to risk her not being on it.

  • I am no longer TTC but I take Zoloft for anxiety and both my psychiatrist and my ob/gyn told me they would be comfortable with me taking it were I to have a surprise/unplanned pg.

    Definitely get a second opinion.

    Just 'cause I think you're a flaming asshole doesn't mean I can't give credit when it's due.

Wow! My obgyn literally just told me its OK to be on zoloft while pregnant, the risk is SO minimal. Get a second opinion, definitely.
  • I was cleared by the RE, PCP and midwife to be on Zoloft through my pregnancy. They stressed that a healthy mom is so important for a healthy baby.

  • You can give me credit without tagging me and making me throw up in my mouth. I guess if you want this board to be even more boring than it currently is, I can go away. There haven't been any dirty mirror selfies in dayyys anyway.
