I think going to the 1700s without plumbing and not getting to bathe regularly is reason enough to try to get back to your time.  No need to try and throw Frank in our faces!

There was too much Frank in the first episode (understandably so) and WAY too much in the episode on Saturday, but I really never cared about Frank so I could be biased.  I do agree with @RevJen that the rest of season 1 will likely focus on Claire and Jamie or it really just won't work.
While everyone else is grimey, Claire is always freshly bathed with clean clothes.

  • The alley scene was ridiculous and such a waste of time.  Even I raised an eyebrow.

  • I finally got to watch the episode last night.  While I didn't have the extreme distaste a lot of people did, I didn't think it was well done.  The "rape" scene was just awful.  Blurry camera, what?.  And even the sex made it look like a super eager Jamie and a just barely willing Claire.  She's supposed to give it back to him as much as she gets and I feel like she's just along for the ride.

I wouldn't have minded the bits and pieces of Frank so I think, like Rev mentioned, it's hard to understand why she would want to go back to Frank when she has Jamie if you haven't read the books.  I just don't think they needed to devote so much time to it.  Honestly, I think it just portrayed him has narrow minded and almost a brute, drunk or not.

And I 100% agree that the connection between Jamie and Claire just isn't there.  I hated that they started the episode with his asking if their chemistry was normal.  That happens after all sorts of hot sex.  I don't think it came across AT ALL with just the wedding scenes.  Claire's supposed to be smart mouthed and sassy.  I'm not getting that at all.

And a big old WTF to skipping the post raid sex scene.  I really felt that sealed a lot of their connection for me.  The idea that they just needed each other in a primal, basic sense.

Right?!?!?!? That scene was less about sex, and more about their close bond. They didn't need to get laid, they needed EACH OTHER and their love, to erase the ugly that had just happened.

  • I'm in the middle of reading Outlander and I see what all of you are saying that I didn't understand before.  Claire is supposed to be a bit of a "spit fire" and I'm totally not seeing that...I see her doubt more than anything else.  Plus, I think it's hard for me to see Randall and Frank be the same person in the TV show and not hate Frank.  Reading the book, I don't get as much of a hatred toward him even though I still want her with Jamie.
