I'm just curious as to what you do with the surplus of funds you should be having at the end of the month.... Your budget totals $5,083, meaning you should have $3,417 left over.

Also, Geico usually offers a discount if you pay in full for the 6 months.

Ooohhh...I recently discovered this little trick.  Except I have Progressive.  Car ins. is really high in my area and I pay about $195/month for one car :(.  But it would be more like $225/month if I didn't prepay 6 months.  It's almost like getting one month for free.

  • @mana8503 just curious (and feel free to not answer!!), what's included in the "Mgt - $1900" line item?

My budget after I get my raise next month will be:

    Take home pay- $2840

    Mortgage- $630

    Cell Phone Bill- $176

    Cable- $151

    Gas/Electric- $100 (varies each month)

    HOA- $35 (paid quarterly)

    Water- $60 (paid quarterly)

    Gas (car)- $120

    School- $150

Car- $700 (almost paid off! Snowballing this currently which is why the payment is so high)

    Car Insurance- $80

Eating out, entertainment, grocery etc.- $300

Any extra is put towards paying off my credit cards each month and then my car payment.

When my car is paid off 2 April (insert happy dance) I will be putting $1010 into savings and upping my student loan payment to pay that off a little earlier.

Note: H & I do not share accounts, so this my info only. H pays for the majority of our groceries that's why there is not a huge line item for that and it is included in my allowance piece.

Edited to correct numbers.. I do my budgeting every two weeks not monthly and I forgot I needed to double some things.

  • Take-home pay - 10,485 (includes tax, retirement, and health/auto/renters insurance)

    Rent - 1,850

    Student loans - 1,075 (ugh)

    Cell phone - 109

    Cable/internet/netflix - 158

    Heat/electric - 400

    Gas - 450

    Groceries - 500

    Target/toiletries - 125

    Car - 396

    529s - 150

    Take-out - 125

    Spending $$ - 200

    Haircut - 50

    DD's dance class - 60

    Misc. - 100

Income excludes any OT for my H, and he usually works 1-2 extra shifts/month (he is a nurse).  Everything left over goes to debt (CC, car, student loans).

  • Breakdown of our budget expenditures:

    Mortgage/taxes/insurance - $2,500
    Utilities (gas/electric/oil/water/sewer) - ~$400/month - varies due to season

    Vacation fund - $1,000
Retirement - We're upping to max out this year, realized we will probably be limited in our 401k contributions in the next year or 2.
Fun money - As we see fit.
Savings - Balance of our money.
