Since the board is dead - Let us discuss how I became obsessed with Outlander (no spoilers)

So as some of us around here know, I read the first Outlander book back in 2009.  At that time, after finishing said book I came away with the opinion that I didn't hate it, but I certainly didn't love it.  At the time, the character of Claire bugged the living daylights out of me and I found myself rolling my eyes at a lot of the things she did.  There were parts of the story that I did appreciate though (after all I am a sucker for a fat, epic historical novel) so I did like the historical aspects of it.  I did give it a 3 star rating on Goodreads. Not great, but not bad either.  I was middle of the road.

But after reading the first book, I didn't feel the need to continue with the series.

Well then skip forward to 2014....for some reason (and I can't remember exactly why... maybe it was because Hoycie started reading the first Outlander), I decided I would try again and pick up Dragonfly in Amber.

Once the books started introducing other characters and the story was about more than just Jamie and Claire, I got sucked in.  While I like the relationship between Jamie and Claire alone, I LOVE them with other family members around them.   I love so many of the supporting characters in this series.  The Fiery Cross (Book #5) has been my absolute favorite so far.

And don't even get me started on my love for Young Ian.

So I have eaten both crow and my humble pie with the Outlander Mafia.  I do believe they will never forget my initial snubbing of the series, but I do believe I have risen up the ranks with them a bit now.

  • This is giving me some motivation to pick the series back up. I read the first one and liked it well enough, but I guess not enough to keep going. I listened to it on audio on my commute, and it took me months to get through it.  I did start DIA a few months ago but only got about 4.5 hours in before I set it aside. Maybe I should pick it back up again...

  • Oh, Young Ian! Love him. I love Fergus as well. I feel like this series just keeps getting better. I can't remember if it was DIA or Voyager that I really had to push through parts of it. It was well worth it though.

This is a series I keep thinking I should love and just don't.  It has everything I love in a novel but I just can't get into it.  I limped through Outlander and liked parts of it but mostly thought it was too long.  I did get through half of Dragonfly in Amber but abandoned it for other things.  I'm in a book rut though so maybe I'll pick it back up.

I have always loved the family relationships in this series. I just started another re-read of Outlander.
  • I just started this series after I kept putting down Outlander a few times.  I powered through the first one and I ended up really liking it.  I'm slowly making my way through DIA, this is a hard one to get into.  But I think I'm finally to the point where I'm about to see some serious action.
    Siggy coming soon....

I just came in here to see Booney's siggy.

And I'm about to start the 3rd book.  I did NOT like the second one in big parts, but i stuck with it because I loved the first book.
