Feeling like an adult

H opened a 401k and I opened a Roth IRA. He will be contributing 6% (no employer match) which will equate to roughly $130-150 a month. I will be contributing $100 a month.

Now that part of adulthood is set up, I will be going back to my blanket fort and coloring.

  • Can I come in & color too?   (Congrats!!!)
  • Congratulations! That is a huge step!

My big "I am officially an adult" moment is going to be this June when H and I are both going to have our own health insurance($300/month). I am so thankful we have had the opportunity to stay on our parents family plans. We wouldn't have been able to accomplish as much as we did without them.

  • Congrats!
That must feel great to have that set up! I know I never realized how excited I would get over saving for retirement. Being an adult is weird.

ugh health insurance. LOL.  We've been buying our own family plan for 4 years, DH has been buying his own plan since he was 23 because of self employment.  I couldn't imagine spending $300 on it now though.  The plan we have is great and inexpensive.

  • I felt the same way when I got my 401k back in October.  I felt like I was finally an adult.

The school houses us year round, pays all the related bills, gives us free wifi, pays for our food 9 months a year, matches retirement 5%, and gives us half our deductible in a HSA every year. I don't mind the $300. Haha.

Plus, maybe it's a New England thing, but $300/month pretax for a couple is a bargain in these parts! I'm so glad to have H's insurance. My legally-single coworker pays $300 just for herself :-/
