Have you/would you ever shave your baby's head?

Re: Have you/would you ever shave your baby's head?

  • They do it in China, too. It's not that the hair grows in thicker, but it looks thicker and more even because it has blunt ends and doesn't have those wispy long bits.
  • DH and I buzz our son's hair because I think it is crazy to pay $10 to cut a teeny little bit of hair. Our neighbors downstairs shaved their kids head into a mohawk and the sides were down to the skin. It was freezing outside.
  • We use the clippers on my son to cut his very, very tight curls. He isn't totally shaved, but it is a pretty close crop. We didn't do it for the first time until he was about 15 months though.
  • I don't see the big deal if the child is a boy. I will not be doing this to DD however. Hell, I can't even cut her nails without drawing blood. I don't belong anywhere near her head with a razor LOL.
  • If his hair was patchy to begin with and she wanted to "reset" with one length, I don't see the problem.

  • All the Mexican ladies I work with swear it makes the hair thicker.  They have done it to all of their children.

ETA: I doubt that I would do shave the babies head for this purpose.  Maybe for it to grow in evenly if it were really patchy?

  • I was very hairy at birth.  My mom said I had a very hairy back, and I had long, dark hair on my head.  Mom considered shaving my back, but left my hair alone.

If I have boys with hair like that, they will be getting buzz cuts.  They'll get it when they need it, as opposed to deciding on 'at X months, he'll be old enough'.

  • My Indian husband wants to do it for our 6-month old baby daughter. My parents (European) are really against it and are basically calling me a bad mother for not protecting my baby from others' harm and ridiculous customs, like this is some horrible thing to do. I'm most sad because her hair isn't long enough to put away a lock of hair. My Mom put away my first long lock of hair and it's beautiful, something I would cherish. :(
  • Boy, you REALLY do not like your "crazy" SIL.

    big round head,
    stick out ears,
    looks ridiculous,
    looks dumb,
    mom livid
    haha
and after all that - you say it is her kid, so I don't care -- but you really do when you spew all that much venom over something that is not worth any negativity.

IF you do not understand her actions, you certainly could handle this in a much better and more supportive way.
