Article: 17 Biggest Budgeting Mistakes You are Making

http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/05/01/17-biggest-budgeting-mistakes-youre-making.aspx?source=eogyholnk0000001

I think most of these have been discussed on here pretty frequently, but we've had some newbies recently (Welcome!) and it might help to see some of our advice from a "professional".

  • Great article! When I first started "budgeting" I definitely suffered from unrealistic expectations. I made a budget like it was a goal or dream month scenario instead of a real spending plan.

I have a love/hate relationship with the idea of budgeting. I think the article draws some good points, but I have found that we don't really "budget" so much as come up with a "spending plan" for each month.

We have found much more success developing an intentional spending plan each month because it allows for flexibility, isn't as "restrictive" and forces you to consciously decide where your money is going each month.

#3 is my biggest downfall, too. I've gotten better, out of necessity, the last month or so. It's a balance between being strict with ourselves (both natural spenders) and realistic.

I am struggling with this lately as well. We are simultaneously trying to pay down debt, while building an emergency savings fund and funding retirement. It's a delicate balance between what's realistic/feasible and going overboard with goals. I have been diligently tracking things and I think DH gets frustrated sometimes with how much attention I give to it. :/

  • I think one of our struggles is that each month we are revising our budget a little, which can get old.  We look at what's going on each months and make adjustments as things change.

It always looks better on paper on the first of the month verses reality on the last day of the month....
