PSA: Flights to Europe...

are stupid cheap right now.  We weren't planning to purchase tickets for our baby-bucket-list trip to Amsterdam until the fall, but it's getting harder to resist.  They are down to $750 pp from Boston on a major, non-budget airline.  I know the situation with Greece seems to only be getting worse, but it's hard to imagine them getting much lower than that.

Anyone else tempted to throw caution to the wind and buy a ticket across the pond?

  • I wish! We are TTC but otherwise, I'd consider it. We are banking points for after baby to fly first class somewhere, likely Asia.

That's awesome!  What country are you thinking about?  Will you bring the baby?  We'll be TTC by the time our trip rolls around too, but I've decided I'm okay with doing this trip in early pregnancy if it works out that way (though missing out on Belgian beers will be slightly sad).

I'm leaning toward Thailand. And we wouldn't bring baby. Though this is all subject to change once he or she arrives!! I'd take baby to Europe but not a continent I'm unfamiliar with. But if we don't end up getting PG soon, we may have to use those points as a pick-me up trip. :)

I would do that in a second. Not going to lie, a similar deal is 100% the reason we are going to France. I snagged a crazy good price for tickets between Atlanta and Paris, bought them, then called H and was like, "So we're flying into and out of Paris. Let's figure out a trip..." He's been to Paris a few times before, so that's why we're going to Provence for most of this trip. I've never seen Paris so we'll do a couple days there at the end. But I tend to like smaller towns anyway, so I'm excited that the bulk of our trip will be elsewhere. If I can get flights to Europe below $850, I don't even burn points. Amsterdam is a particularly expensive city, so yeah I would jump.

Also, I don't think the Greece thing will affect airline prices too much. Fuel prices have a bigger impact there. Have you been to Europe before? I would be super fine about being pg in the Benelux area. My H is Belgian (dual citizen), so if you have any questions, fire away. You may not be able to drink the beer, but you can still indulge in the Neuhaus chocolates!

Thanks! I've been to England and Ireland, but not mainland Europe. H and I got really interested in Dutch culture after meeting so many friendly people on our Bonaire trip. We may try to get to Belgium on the trip too, but are undecided. Part of me likes to stay in one place and really absorb a city, and the other part wants to see all of the things.

Good to hear you concur that it would be a fine place to go PG! I wanted to avoid France or Spain and make sure I could enjoy the wine when I go there someday. Of course I'm getting way ahead of myself here, and would be very lucky to conceive that quickly.

I'll let you know if any questions come up! One thing we've been doing to help get excited is learning some Dutch on the Duolingo app. I know everyone speaks English there, but it's still fun to get a feel for the language.

@als1982 Thailand would be amazing! FX you won't need to use those points anytime soon!

Are you planning on going next April? Because I mean.... April=tulips=amazing. They are my favorite flower though, so I'm biased :) We're visiting Belgium and NW Germany over Christmas to see H's grandma. I haven't been to Amsterdam. I told H I want to wait until we can work it into a spring trip.

  • We bought our flights to/from Europe in March. In the $500's per person to fly Krakow to Warsaw to Chicago. Love it! Kind of makes up for the $900 flights to Berlin.

WOW! You win. Great find. $900 to Berlin doesn't even sound that bad.

@hoffse because of my work schedule we'll actually have to go in March. I know it's not considered the ideal timing for that trip, but I have a pretty serious hatred of crowds so a quieter time at the museums will be a big benefit. Flights and housing (we're probably gonna go AirBnB) are also much cheaper.
  • If I weren't pregnant, we'd be all over this!

  • Alright, H and I are gonna chat tonight and if it can be cash flowed, we're locking this down :-)

Another theory is that Aer Lingus is trying to stay competitive with WOW, which just came to Boston. If that's the case I'm assuming it's a temporary situation.

We live near Denver and it's not usually great for international flights, but we are getting tickets from Denver to London, then Paris to Denver for $915. Super excited for our trip this fall!

I dunno. We just booked a trip to Paris a couple of days ago and our flights were just a tad over $1k. In fairness, we did book later than usual for an international trip -- it was more of a spur of the moment trip for early September -- so maybe if we booked further out we would've gotten a better deal.
  • Alright, we booked! Around $718 pp. I have the standard big purchase shock feeling but am so excited and feel good about the deal!
