You won't regret taking the upper cabinets to the ceiling!  The extra storage is great (we keep things we only use 2-3 times a year up there) and it eliminates the collection of dust and grease on top of the cabinets.

Good call on venting the microwave to the outside, ours didn't have a vent before either.

Can't wait to see the finished product @hoffse! Wow 5 days doesn't seem like long at all, that's great! And loving the white cabinets too!

Fun tip for anyone that doesn't have cabinets to the ceiling, if you put a sheet of wax paper on top of the cabinets it will collect all the dust and grease then once or twice a year just throw it away and replace. It really helps with cleaning up there! :)

I totally never thought of this--brilliant!
that is an awesome idea!  I just ignore it and don't go up that high when cleaning.

I can't take credit for it, it was a pinterest special ;)... I also usually ignore cleaning up there too, but this thread has motivated me to get up there this weekend!

  • What a difference already!! Love it so far!

  • It looks awesome- their timeline is amazing! A brand new kitchen in a week- it's like you're on a HGTV show or something. Can't wait to see when it's all done- it'll be such a great space!

Can I also reiterate how happy I am we used these guys?  The cabinets are solid plywood - including the drawer boxes (as you can see in the photos).  If we had ordered plywood cabinets with that many drawers from a big box store or even a cabinet retailer, the cabinets alone would have cost more than our entire kitchen is costing (with labor).  We priced them out and got serious sticker shock.  This contractor uses a local guy that just builds his own cabinets, and he does it well. We aren't getting gauged for the quality we wanted.

I told H last night that I am so happy with how this is coming along, this house just might turn into my forever house.  Regardless, I think the improvements will make us happy to stay here at least several more years beyond our initial plans, and that's incredibly valuable.

  • It looks awesome so far, and that timeline is amazing!

You also sound like us.  We bought our foreclosure and couldn't move into it for 6 months because of the shape it was in.  At that time we said we would fix it and flip it within 5 years.  Here we are, 6 years later, and are discussing staying here for another 5 years. It's amazing how some remodeling will make you fall in love.

  • It's looking AMAZING! I can't wait to see the finished product. What colors did you go with for your granite?

We have light gray cabinents (painted our existing cabinets for $35 since this is a short term house) and went with a gray, black, and silvery granite when we got new counters.

    Oh I love grey cabinets!

Our granite is called White Spring.  It's a white/taupe based background with lots of movement in it - black, grey, and gold veining.  It also has some dark red flecks in it (we'll see how visible those actually are once it's installed).  It's quite busy, but we both fell in love with it and the rest of the kitchen design is so simple that we think a busier granite will be fine.

We are hoping the grey/black/gold will help tie in the floors and the stainless appliances, and we're doing a taupe subway tile backsplash that should blend nicely.  We went to the granite yard on Tuesday and picked out which parts of the slab we wanted to use.  I think I'm most excited about the piece for the Butler's pantry - it's going to be one piece that has this gorgeous gold veining running the entire length.

I had initially thought we would go with something more subdued, but we just fell in love with it.  And H made the point that if we're paying for a big piece of rock, it ought to look like a (very cool) rock.

Nice! I'm not normally a fan of granite but love the light color and use of the subway tile!! Very clean and modern.

Thanks! I'm usually not the biggest fan of granite either. I really love marble. But it etches so easily I just can't justify spending that kind of money and then having to treat it with kid gloves every time we wanted to use the space. Despite our efforts, we are pretty messy cooks and that's not going to change. This granite was a good compromise in terms of the lighter color we wanted, but it provides durability that marble doesn't have.
