I went to a Big Ten school in a college town (not Northwestern) exactly 20 years ago. My parents gave me $10,000 a year for tuition, room and board. It was slightly cheaper to live in an off campus apartment, but I was also two blocks from campus. So it wasn't like I missed out on the college experience in any way. I just looked it up and that cost is now $30,000.
