NBR: Netflix

I'm in the mood to binge watch some shows.  On my list are Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead.  All of which I've watched the first 3 or 4 episodes.  Other shows I'm watching that I'm waiting for new episodes are Reign, and the final season of Parenthood.  I keep trying on Gilmore Girls.  I've seen through the first couple episodes of season 2.  I'm enjoying it, but not jumping to get back at it each night.  Also, the sheer number of episodes is daunting to me.  I'm also through season 5 of Supernatural and bored.  I'm a couple of episodes into the latest season of GOT, but I'm waiting for J to catch up.

Help me sort through my hot mess of shows and tell me which ones are worth continuing/finishing or if there's a new show (preferable that only has a few seasons) that I NEED to watch.

Special project:  Are there any shows that I can enjoy with an almost 3 year old around?  I just want something that I can watch while he's playing on the weekends that won't turn him into a serial killer.

Re: NBR: Netflix

  • Child friendly-ish: The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Arrested Development

Not as child-friendly: Grace and Frankie (lots of f-bombs, but nothing violent), any of the BBC/PBS Masterpiece shows
    imageimage image
  • I meant to put BBC/PBS Masterpiece with child friendly - most of those are fine
    imageimage image
  • Good thinking on TUKS!  I did watch the first 2 episodes of that. I'll get back to that one too.

  • Kimmy Schmidt is so fun!  We haven't finished it yet, but the episodes I watched were great.

Breaking Bad is probably my favorite show ever of all time on TV.  So IMO, you NEED to watch that.

I feel pretty much as strongly about House of Cards - it's my favorite show ever of all time on streaming non-TV.
  • Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy.

    Another vote for Kimmy Schmidt.

    I also like OITNB.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • OITNB.  I binged watch Gilmore Girls and PPL on Netflix.  I loved both of those.  For some reason I'm obsessed with watching documentaries on Netflix.  I like the ones about food in particular.

  • Sorry, I should clarify.  I just finished OITNB.

@lab7979 have you watched Somm?  I love that documentary.

Walking Dead is one of my favorite shows ever so I definitely recommend that one, but it's not really something I feel comfortable watching with my boys (3 and 5 yo) around. Too much blood and gore. I'd also recommend Justified. I'm just finished the end of season 2 and I don't think that one gets the press it deserves. That I watched on Amazon Prime though,  not sure if it's available on Netflix.  Breaking Bad is on my list to watch too.

Kimmy Schmidt and Parks and Recreation are great if you want comedy and both are mostly kid friendly.

Have you ever watched Doctor Who? That's usually our go-to to entertain Paul and I and not scare the bejeezus out of the kids. The first season of the reboot is pretty campy, but I got hooked in seasons 2 and 3 and have loved all the rest.

Or maybe the 100? That's pretty awesome too and season 1 is on Netflix. There is some violence, so I'd sometimes have to turn it off with the boys, but some episodes were okay with them around.

  • Kid friendly: Dawson's Creek and Gilmore Girls (these are what I watch)

Not Kid Friendly: Scandal, The Dallas reboot ( I actually liked it) plus all the ones mentioned here.

I get overwhelmed with all the choices on Netflix.

    My favorite Cake Wreck ever.

  • Not kid friendly, but we loved House of Cards.  We also binge watched Mad Men.  We're currently working through Scandal and really like it. I never watched Park and Rec so I just started those.  You can never go wrong with Friends either! :)

Child friendly-ish: The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
I was absolutely going to say this before I started reading the comments!

Also, Suits is fun if you haven't watched it before. It's not particularly kid-friendly, but it has little to no violence or nudity. And unless your kid is old enough to become disillusioned with the American justice system, I can't see it doing too much damage!

    Not kid-friendly:

I've been enjoying Orphan Black. It takes an episode or two to start understanding what's going on, but after that I binge-watched most of it.

Orphan Black is addictive!  When does the next season air?

  • I agree with Doctor Who for kid-friendly. My 3yo loves watching it with me. I also watched the first couple seasons of Hart of Dixie and liked it.

I love Gilmore Girls...but I started in the middle in season 4 and then worked backwards from 1 to the end of 3. Maybe jump ahead to season 3, I think the Dean/Jess saga gets better. The last season was a big let down, at least for me.

I saw one later season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer when it was on tv, so I recently started watching season 1. Everyone says to get past the first season as it's not cheesy, it moves to a real plot. I think each season stands alone enough that you might be able to jump back and forth...but again not kid friendly as she kicks some serious a$$.

I never watched Friends, but I've seen a few episodes with my Dad, it's actually really good, much better as an adult. There might be some episodes that are more kid friendly (less talk of sex) and the episodes are less than 30 mins so it's easier to watch if you have less time.

I got into Awkward (on Amazon Prime) I'm only halfway through season 3 but it's easy to binge on, although not kid friendly. My dad really liked Mad Men, I've seen a few episodes of that with him and it's pretty good.

Finally, I've heard SOA is really good, I had no desire to watch it but I'm a huge Dave Navarro fan and apparently he has a small role in Season 4 or 5? At least 2 seasons of Ink Master is on Netflix if you like Dave and or tattoos...
  • Love Awkward

  • I LOVE Buffy!

Thanks for the Awkward reminder.  I want to get back to that show!

The third season just ended on 20 June, so I think season 4 will start next April or May. I forget where Netflix is at.

  • I think Awkward is coming back soon with new episodes? Faking it is really good too.

I've heard "The Killing" on Netflix was really good. Everyone likes this "True Detective" show too although I don't think it's on Netflix.

I just, don't really care about what's going on. Except for Matt and Julie. I want to punch the Tim Riggins older brother storyline in the face. (More shirtless Riggins would be fine, tho)

  • Kid-friendly - Friends, That 70s Show, Last Man Standing (not my fav but DH likes it)

I wouldn't have DS sit down and watch these with me, but I will watch these when I am folding laundry and he is playing with toys: The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, New Girl (almost kid friendly but has a lot of sex references)

Not kid-friendly IMO, but I love these: The Walking Dead, GoT, OITNB
