I don't post here often, but I lurk a lot.

    1. I am a full time musician/music teacher
    2. I love my job.  I've always known I wanted to be a musician and I feel incredibly blessed that I get to do what I love for a living.  I do hate scheduling.  I hate that I have to make 25 calls for one gig/studio booking and that my students always need a new schedule and have a hard time understanding that I hold a full student schedule, so I don't just sit around all day waiting for them.
    3. This is my dream career.  It takes different forms now and again, but I love that I have the freedom of self-employment to change things as my creative and financial needs change.
Yes I love the freedom too!  Wish I could do it full time but our daughter takes up all my days.  What do you play?
Voice, guitar, and piano.  Having the flexibility to be with your daughter is awesome!  We want to have a baby in a couple of years and I love that I can decrease and increase my hours at will.  I have the perfect job for being a parent.
It really is nice.  I only teach 2 nights a week and gigs are on the weekend when DH can watch her so makes it easy to schedule.  Although when we have a 2nd kid not sure if I will be able to keep up the teaching for the first year so I may take a year sabbatical.
Every time I think about having a baby, I feel stressed out about taking maternity leave even though I know I just want to work part time afterwards.  I'm have 60+ students and I've been with most of them for years, so even just taking a few months off is going to be difficult.  I'll probably look for someone to take over for my maternity leave so I don't leave everyone in a lurch.
that's a LOT of students!  I only do it part time and average 9-12 per week and that's the most I will take on for probably another 5-6 years.  It's ok for me because gigs pay so much better so I'd rather work more at getting those.

I only took 1 month off from having a c/section, but I didn't have many students at the time so it was no big deal.  I do feel bad thinking about when I will stop teaching and how it will affect them.  If I have the horrible pregnancy I did with DD I will probably have to really take it easy.  With our last child I just want to treasure the moment and not feel so busy all the time you know?
I do understand, totally.  That's exactly how I feel- I want to be there and have the time and energy to cherish every moment.

What types of gigs do you do that pay better than teaching?  I charge $60 an hour teaching, which is pretty much the going rate here, and only a few types of gigs seem to pay better than that.  I'm just curious.  Do you do all GB work?
Going rate for teaching here is around $40 per hour so that's what I charge and we play weddings/corporate events/holiday parties - typically 35-40 events per year.  Normal rate is $150 per player per hour, but I do give a discount on multiple hours if its at the same location.  Would I rather get a check for $40 or a check for $150 - I enjoy that I can still play as well.

I used to gig several times a week in bars and restaurants mostly, plus some private events.  The private events obviously paid better, but it took so much work to book myself, it didn't pay that well for a lot of hours of work between booking, traveling, set up, usually a 3-4 hour gig, break down... it just wasn't worth it when I could be teaching 30-40 hours per week, with only maybe another 10 hours per week of paperwork/correspondence.  35-40 events per year is great!  I have friends who are in GB bands and if they do that many gigs with a little teaching, they do pretty well.
Teaching became the priority and I love it.  I teach privately, run an a cappella chorus, and have a few teachers who work for me.
  • Looks like it works for you!  I don't do gigs that require that kind of set up and tear down and it's not that hard to book.  We play at most 2 hours at a time.  It would be impossible for me to teach that much at this point because I would have to make sure I had a sitter lined up for DD every day because teaching with her in the room or house is a disaster.  I have a studio in my house and a studio in DH's business.  Honestly when I'm a SAH parent all day , the last thing I want to do is to teach for 4 hours straight.  It's just the point my life is at right now.  Way back in my 20s though I had 24 students while I was getting my college degree - it was some great income.

I've been thinking about gigging more when I have a baby because weekend work would be more manageable.  No way you can teach with your kid in the room!  Teaching in your house is really nice too :)
