Thursday Randoms

Re: Thursday Randoms

  • Another Thursday random to follow up to the TV show thread, I haven't watched Orange is the New Black and I want to give it a try, but I"m hesitant since it's so hyped. I'm afraid it won't be that good, although I think I just don't care about the content.
I've just started it. I had the same reservations that you did, but I just love it! I'm only 4 episodes in (Netflix disc #1) but I plan to binge as best I can while DH is away week after next. It really is awesome.

Maybe it's because I live in a place that literally has no seasons other than hot and then not so hot but I just don't understand the hype.
I think I might lose my mind living in a place like that.  I don't really need winter to be quite as long and harsh as it can sometimes be here, but usually by about the time the season is changing, I'm ready to move on to something new anyway.  I do love fall weather in new england, though.
I'm happy to look at pretty leaves and autumnal colors! But snow? No thanks. I'm happy in my mostly 70 degree year round climate. I would probably actually lose my mind if I lived in NE. One time @MrsJenE told me she had to shovel her driveway everyday for a month or something like that. I don't want to live in a world where that happens to good people.
Dude. One time, I threw in the shovel (you know...instead of towel). I literally threw it into a mound of snow and proceeded to cry for five minutes because it felt like I was getting nowhere in my snow removal efforts.

The tears froze to my face. Not one of my finest moments.

Quick vent:  Am I the only one whose DH avoids doing things because traffic?  We're going down the cape this weekend.  It's Labor Day weekend.  On Cape Cod.  There will be traffic and crowded places.  This is unavoidable and we knew it when we booked.

I've never been out to Provincetown, and it's about an hour from where we're staying so I said I'd like to go for brunch on Sunday morning, or maybe just to wander around and have lunch on Saturday.  He just texted me that he doesn't think we should go all the way out to Ptown because traffic on a holiday weekend is going to be bad.  Really?  So it takes a little longer to get there - who cares!?

I'm also kind of bummed because I was hoping to go to National Seashore beaches, but his lingering ankle injury makes it hard enough for him to walk on the sand, but especially down the steep dunes out there.

New Englanders (and anyone else who's been) - favorite spots on Cape Cod?  Beaches, bars, restaurants, stuff to do?  We're staying in Dennisport, but I'm willing to do/go whatever/wherever.
You are not alone. DH is allergic to traffic as well. It drives me nuts. We only live about 1/2 hour from the beach, but he doesn't like to go because of traffic. DS and I just go without him.

  • My husband can be a bit difficult to get out of the house based on distance. To give him credit he grew up in a city so his idea of "a long drive to the grocery store" is 15 minutes but it drives me nuts. He's afraid to travel anywhere on vacation that isn't all inclusive as well, god forbid you drive away from the hotel/resort assuming it's safe.

I'm also over trying to make plans. I'm still good friends with a group of ladies I used to work with but it's impossible to get a date for drinks with them. You have to plan on a weeknight 2 months in advance near one specific person (which isn't near anyone else) just to have them cancel. My SIL is trying to guilt us into seeing her since DH works just about every weekend and holiday. I tried to make group plans with all siblings today and she's making it difficult. Does anyone else have trouble getting group plans?
  • That is frustrating with your husband though. I assume this isn't your first trip to the Cape so he should know leave late Thursday night or plan on a 6 hour trip in on Friday. What's the point of going away if you just stay in the same little spot?
  • @MrsJenE - That story makes me so sad. You used to live here! Remember all of the sunshine?

Worse yet - we're leaving Saturday morning!  Pretty sure I'm driving (since DH freaks out about sand in his car), so that will make it easier.
  • It'll be at least two months before we have a decent "fall" day.  I find it hard to get super excited about sweaters and pumpkins when it's still in the 90s on a regular basis.

I'm having fertility-related tests done in the next few days and feel a constant low nausea.

  • I used to live in a place that was hot all year. Now I live in a place with snow, and I have learned to very much enjoy it:

That said, I never have to shovel. Downtown they never shovel anything. You learn very quickly to walk around like a penguin and wear crampons daily.

  • A propos, the word "crampons" never ceases to make me think of menstruation.

  • Oh man. I'll just have to do six months here and six months there.

I've realized that every time I see Veronica Roth's pic on GR, I give her the stink eye because I am still pissed about Allegiant. I need to let it go.

I realized the other day how annoyed I was at her for not having anything new yet. How does Sarah Maas have both ToG and CoTaR going at once, and Veronica Roth has nothing new from October 22, 2013 through (according to USA Today) sometime in 2017? I understand this may be unrealistic, but I've come to expect more from YA writers.
Maybe because of all the movie stuff, she hasn't been able to write more? Although, I am still on the fence about shunning her because of Allegiant.
Maybe she'll make the movie for Allegiant better than the book. :(

The idea of that plus all of that outerwear makes me sad in my saddest of places. It's not hot here unless there's a heat wave. It's literally 75 degrees 9 months out of the year. I'm not giving that up! I've actually never seen snow IRL...I don't think I'm missing anything.

I've seen snow every year of my life, it's nothing special. I guess if you ski/snowboard and don't have to shovel it's alright but I would give my left leg to move to a warm/no snow environment

  • Speaking of New Englander's being sick of stuff, I'm so glad this stupid Tom Brady crap will hopefully be over too. I don't care for the Patriots (sorry!) and I'm sick of the coverage.
  • I love having seasons. And we have all the seasons. Hot summer, beautiful fall, freezing cold winter, rainy spring- it's like a freaking 2nd grade science book.

And let me tell you, as a person from a temperate climate: EARLY SEPTEMBER IS NOT FALL. Because it's still summer. According to the calendar, according to the actual temperature outside, according to everything.

I love me some pumpkin, don't get me wrong, but when it's hot? No thanks.

But that is a whole other rant: I don't like the idea of rushing along from one thing to the next and being bored with something before it even arrives- We have Fall Fever in September so on November first we can go crazy over Christmas and so on. I just try to make it a point to enjoy fully the season we're in.

Which is why we'll be playing in the sprinkler tomorrow. Boom.

  • I love cold weather, but that's because I'm a Floridian and we get approximately 5 "cold" days a year, where the temp drops into the 30s/40s. Florida "winter" is my favorite.

I think snow is beautiful and all but I prefer to see it on the TV from the comfort of my air-conditioned living room while it's 75 and gorgeous outside.

It gets crazy humid and hot here during the summers but you get used to it. I'll take the heat over wearing 5,000 layers and shoveling driveways any day.

How did I not know this?! Must have it!

ETA - Also, loving this quote from the Amazon page:
"The Bloggess writes stuff that actually is laugh-out-loud, but you know that really you shouldn't be laughing and probably you'll go to hell for laughing, so maybe you shouldn't read it. That would be safer and wiser. (Neil Gaiman)"
