Re: Thursday Randoms

  • We are finally getting a "cool" front this weekend. In giddy with excitement. I mean, 85 isn't cool exactly but better than 105..

  • I have been thinking a lot about law school. I have always either wanted to be a lawyer or teach. I am currently don't do either. I am also 31 and feel that I am to old to go to law school (despite me being in school right now to finish my BA)

You're definitely not too old.  I mean, depressing as it is, you still have +/- 30 years of a career left.  You're only 25ish % done!

That wasn't as uplifting as I was hoping it would be, sorry.

It's totally not too late for law school.  I would look pretty hard at the job market for attorneys where you live though.  Right now in my state, the starting salary for a new associate is generally not enough to make your student loan payments, never mind pay a mortgage or whatever else you have to pay for.  Maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but seriously, you're kind of just lucky to even find a job as an attorney straight out of school here.  Lots of brand new attorneys are taking jobs as paralegals and legal assistants (much to the chagrin of new paralegals who are also struggling to find jobs).  It's kind of grim.

But if you know that you want to get into law, then its definitely not too late.
  • Never too late to go back to school, but yes I agree do the math and market research. I worked for a student loan refinance company and you typically have more loans than income due to a super saturated market. At the very least go get wined and dined at some law school open houses and find out what you have to do to get in. Worst case, go into teaching. In a lot of states you need a Master's anyway so you kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

I like the dystopian plot too, I'd read it.

My random is that I don't care about football. I'm not a patriots fan so I'm going to have to hide out in another room tonight, god forbid DH misses the home opener on the big tv. I'm so fresh.
  • I don't care about football either.  We live in New England and DH is a huge Miami Dolphins fan, so there is a lot of Patriots hatred in my house.  I could not care less about Tom effing Brady and I'm so tired of hearing about all of it.

Unpopular opinion...this whole Tom Brady thing reminds me of a 3 year old throwing a temper tantrum because they got caught doing something wrong. Yes you should be kicked out of the league for abusing your spouse but suck it up you did wrong, move on. You can't say that in New England without getting a lashing.

Seriously?  Something tells me that Packers fans would be all up in arms if this same thing was happening to Clay Matthews.  Or Denver fans if it were Payton Manning.  New England fans aren't the only fans that are passionate about defending their team.  AND FOR THE RECORD, THERE WAS NO PROOF!

My ambivalence for football is so strong that I have no idea what you are talking about.  I thought Brady was in trouble for his deflated balls.

On the other hand, today I am rejoicing because Amaro (the Phils GM) was finally sacked after running the team into the ground for the past 5+ years!!!  :-bd
  • I guess another UO here is.... I CAN'T WAIT FOR FOOTBALL!!!

I am thinking this too. I am lucky and the current company I work for offers some scholarships at the local university so half of every semester is paid for. If I stay here and then go part time to school for teaching I could walk away with no more in loans then now.

  • I REALLY hate the assumption that a lot of people have (including my BIL) that mothers should be the default parent.  I just got a text from my sister asking if we wanted to come over on Sunday with my brother and his wife and son.  The "boys would go shooting at the range on and the wives could hang out with the kids". Direct quote. I'm all ragey.

Now, obviously, the kids are better away from a shooting range.  I think it's the wording the bothers me.  I have no problem hanging out with my family and our children, I love it.  But I hate the assumption that the boys go out and 'do' something, but we stay home.  I'm going to suggest we go out somewhere too.  My brother and J are very good about, you know, being a parent when I want to go out, but my BIL? He's archaic.

I think it really ticks me off because I have a friend whose husband does this.  I can so rarely see her without her son because her husband is out doing something fun.  Why can't he bring him? I sometimes just want to hang out with my friend! I miss her!

I see this happen a lot as well. My SIL and I have talked about it before. We both hate that the assumption is that we will be watching the kids. Like you said, it is assumed that the mommy is the default parent. I've also noted that when the men take the kids and do something with them without the mommies, it's like they expect a pat on the back or something. DH doesn't act like that too often but it has happened on occasion. Not cool.

A huge part of why I don't want kids is because my husband would do that to me. My MIL made a comment recently about her niece who's baby daddy is a deadbeat in the working sense, he just won't get a frigging job. When the niece said she'd go get a job just to, I don't know pay the bills while he's home not working my MIL said "no, he should get a job, children belong home with their mother". Yes mom's do a great job, but in 2015 you shouldn't have too/can't always stay home as default parent. That really ground my gears but I stayed quiet since she's "old school"

I HATE that!  My parents have a very equal partnership when it comes to pretty much all of their responsibilties.  My husbands parents are little more old fashioned.  I let it be known early on that I expected equality in our parenting responsibilities.  It bothers me that whenever a mother is watching her children its just her responsibility but when a dad is home alone with the kids everyone says "he has to stay at home and babysit" like he is watching a strangers kids and not his own.  My husband actually spends more time with our kids than I do because he works from home.  I have a long commute so he takes them to and from school and sports practices.  Moms actually call him about play dates instead of me.  I feel a little bad about that but I think in the long run spending all of that time with them will be great for their relationship.
