Re: Things you didn't realize

  • I used to think elbow grease was just a type of grease.   :\">

  • My dad always said 'being haved' (sounds like shaved), instead of behaving.

I didn't realize the numbers on a toaster meant minutes. I just thought it was degrees of toastedness. I discovered this when I was maybe 30ish.

According to my coworkers, there is a "correct way" to hang a paperclip, which is small part to the front and large to the back. I always paperclip backwards, apparently. So I learned this maybe 5 years ago, when my boss hollered 'WHO KEEPS PAPERCLIPPING BACKWARDS?!!" from her office.

The little arrow by your fuel indicator is telling you which side of the car the fuel door is on. I learned this in about my mid-twenties.

Ditto.  I'm going to time my toaster when I get home.

I don't think it tastes different but the texture is different.  My kids will only eat spaghetti shaped pasta.  They refuse to eat any other shape.  It drives me nuts.

  • When I was little I thought period movies were actually filmed in that period, like Mary Poppins was filmed in the nineteen teens. I figured it out by middle school when I realized that the motion picture technology wasn't all that old. Derp.

  • I once asked a friend of mine if you had to have sex while on your period to get pregnant. I was totally horrified (having just started my period recently) to think that you'd have to have sex while this nasty biz was happening.

  • I didn't know how to make canned soup until I was in college. I never used to make it and just never really thought about it until I was on my own.

Several of these things are new information to me.

I didn't really get the humor of Harry Potter until I listened to it read out loud. Diagon Alley, Grimauld Place, and many things the Weasleys said went over my head.
  • I always thought Clint Eastwood's name was First Name Clineastwood and that he was like a Cher or Madonna, so famous he only needed to go by his last name.

I also think the piggie went to the grocery store...I'm rather sad to think of any other alternative.

My brother swears the same thing.  I told him that he's nuts but he swears by it.

  • I realized just a couple of years ago that the duck sauce at chinese restaurants is called that because it is in fact meant to be put on duck.  I don't eat duck, so I just always thought it was a fun name.
  • My mom always told us that we had to eat the crust on our bread because that was where all the vitamins were.  I was in my 20s before I realized this wasn't true.  When I called my mom to confront her, she said it's what my Mema told her and she had never thought anything different until I brought it up.

  • We had a party last weekend, and when putting away the food I opened a new roll of tin foil and pushed in the cutouts on the ends of the box to make sure the roll doesn't come out when I'm pulling on it, and at least three people asked me what I was doing and had no idea those cutouts were even there.

    I didn't know that's what it's for either.

  • I didn't know the toaster thing either!

When I was little I thought that the people that were killed in movies and TV shows were people that really wanted to die.

  • I don't think the toaster thing is right because I put my English muffins on 6 and it definitely doesn't take 6 mins. My husband made fun of me for not knowing how our well worked. In my mind we had a really long pipe that pulled from the reservoir

My mom told us this too! I was definitely either a late teenager or an adult when I found out the truth.
