What is your grocery budget?

Re: What is your grocery budget?

  • There's just 2 of us, and we spend roughly $300/month {$150/pay} I typically try to buy the lesser expensive of most things {certain brand excepted} and we do try to visit CostCo for more pricier things like ground beef or pork chops. When we do costco, I increase that grocery week to $200 in case.
    {this amount includes everything except prescriptions and mouthwash I've been requested to buy from my dentist}

@katiecutie05 I feel you.  It's a struggle to keep within our $450 budget with me BFing.  The amount of food I eat is insane, and I'm not the healthiest about it.  It's also nuts being back to work full time with a 7.5 month old.  So we don't eat the healthiest either.
But beans in any form, peanut butter, and avocado are staples for me.  Protein and calorie fillers, yet not terribly bad for you.
I should also take stock in Aldi's frozen fish fillets.  Put some pesto over those and pop them into the oven for 15 minutes.  They're 4.99 for 6 fillets.
That's how I was when I was pregnant - I ate an ungodly amount of food and I got so SICK of trying to plan out my meals and it felt as if my entire life revolved around 6 meal times.  Honestly the reason I didn't breastfeed was because I was SO sick of eating and I wanted to cut calories post delivery.  don't judge :)

No judgement at all.  I feeling like nursing is worse than hunger during pregnancy.  At least then it was satisfied with a handful of Cheerios.  Now I'm constantly starving, and if I exercise to try and lose some of the baby weight then I'm even more hungry.
I wake up at 4am feeling like I'm going to be sick because I'm hungry, and that's even if I eat at 9 or 10pm before going to bed.
Pregnancy hunger was nowhere near this bad.

I had a former coworker who complained about this all the time.  I think it was her least favorite part of being pregnant, lol.  Plus she had really opposite (a bit bad) eating habits before then.  She'd usually skip breakfast, never had snacks, sometimes her lunch was really light.  So to suddenly have to go to eating multiple times a day...and really specific foods at that...was torture for her.

It taught me a positive lesson though of the lengths women will go to, to protect their unborn.  I guarantee you, if she had to have that eating schedule for her own health, she would never have done it.  But for her baby, she followed it religiously.

  • $350 to $400 per month for just H and I. This includes all cleaning products/toiletries etc.
  • I budget $300/month for groceries for just me and H, which doesn't include toiletries/household goods/alcohol. I hate itemizing receipts but I like knowing exactly how much we spend on certain things (especially alcohol, since that's a problem area for us - I'm no longer surprised when H gets beer on a solo trip to the store. Pick my battles, lol).

Eating out is another problem area, so I've actually been making an effort to spend more $ on groceries. A big reason we eat out is because we don't have enough food to last between shops, and many months we'll come in under budget on groceries. I've found if we spend more on groceries/do better at meal planning, we'll eat out for dinner less.

  • I definitely need more food now then i did when i was pregnant. I guess it takes a lot more to feed an 8 month old then an unborn baby - go figure. Although this no dairy thing has killed me- It was really easy to get all my calories when i could eat cheese. (Now, I would kill for some pesto!) I actually lost too much weigh because i wasn't eating enough and the doc is making me eat more because apparently my son is eating me alive... although i still can't find enough to eat so that usually consists of peanut butter crackers and a gatorade. I work full time, i don't have time to cook full meals. Time is money though and I have neither.

your breastfeeding hunger sounds just like my pregnancy hunger.  I literally thought I would get sick or pass out if I didn't eat.  The hunger was like nothing I experienced and honestly the thing I'm most dreading next time.  I'm so terrified to get pregnant again because I also had the puking - it was a vicious cycle.  As soon as I would puke then I needed to eat.  As I was eating breakfast my tummy growled for lunch.  It was UNREAL.  I gained a ton of weight and I can't let myself do that again. I"m trying to visualize a somewhat normal pregnancy next time.

Yep - All thru my pregnancy and 3 years of DDs life I said never again we are one and done.  That was really a horrible experience for me.  Now we will start trying #2 next year - I must be delusional.  I just gotta take one for the team I guess.

  • We budget $660 per month for our family of 5. Our goal is roughly $130 per week assuming a 5 week month so that we have some more wiggle room in the months with only 4 shopping trips. This is great for having extra to stock up on things, especially diapers and formula.

We mainly shop at Wal-Mart and our budget includes food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, diapers and formula. We eat mostly vegetarian just as a taste preference and any eating out comes from our individual spending money. We eat out roughly twice per month. We also buy probably 80% of our groceries store brand.
