November discussion?

I'm glad to see that there was interest and participation in discussing The Three yesterday!  I wish I could've been on more to participate yesterday instead of playing catch up this morning.  Yay monthly discussion books!

Someone from the PNR group had posted a list of proposed genres for monthly discussions back when they opened this up - are we still going to try and do it again next month?  @SnShne322 or @duxcaelo - did one of you guys post that list, and do you still want to do it?

Sorry if I'm too early with this, but sometimes it takes me a while to get the book from the library and then even longer to actually read it . . .

Re: November discussion?

  • Found it.

For November, the suggestion was YA/NA.
  • While, I didn't love the Horror read, I was encouraged by how much I was looking forward to the discussion.  I'm definitely in for November.

Any suggestions for the book to read? @duxcaelo usually spearheads the PNR/UF read, but she's got more important things going on.  Any one else want to take lead? (assuming H isn't still chomping at the bit to do it, I don't want to assume) I will if others aren't interested.

I'm always open to suggestions for good YA/NA books to read.  I have no idea what's out there that might spark good discussion, though.  I loved My Life Next Door.

Colleen Hoover is all the rage right now, right?  Is it too hard to read and discuss a book that comes out in November?
  • Ugly Love might be a good choice for Colleen Hoover.  The movie is coming out sometime next year.

She has another coming out soon, too.  It's called November 9th and it's coming out on November 10th.  Probably too late for the discussion though.

  • I'd be up for a November discussion. I haven't read NA yet but I'd love too. Both options mentioned sound great. I'll throw my vote to Ugly Love if the movie's coming out...I'm such a sucker for reading the book before the movie.
  • If book to movie is key, then there are several other YA novels that have been made into movies for 2016.

    The 5th Wave
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
    Shadowhunters (tv show)
    The BFG
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
    A Monster Calls
    Let It Snow
    Fallen

I'm 50/50 with her now I think.  I've read a few that I've really enjoyed and others I was just WTF about.  I do wish that she'd write a book that didn't have some SUPER SERIOUS family tragedy.

  • I only threw out Colleen Hoover's name because I feel like I see it everywhere lately.  I've only read one of her books, and I liked it a lot.  But I've only read one.

I have very little insight into what's good in the YA/NA world right now, so I will leave suggestions to you guys.

YES.  I can bring myself to read NA if we choose it, but can we please pick one that leans towards fun and away from so much angst?
    imageimage image
  • @SnShne322 Feel free to take the lead! :)

@nocturnalintimacy suggested the following a few months ago:
    The Red Queen
    Paranormalcy
    The Wrath and the Dawn
    The Orphan Queen
    Threats of Sky & Sea
Falling Kingdoms <- I read this one and loved it. I selfishly want everyone else to read it too so that I have people to read book 2 with
Throne of Glass series <- I read this too, but I'm down for a re-read
Duxcaelo's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (2011-goodreads shelf)
    Anniversary
  • The Red Queen has been on my TBR, so I'm up for that.

I'd actually love to try more NA, but I'm with Julie, if we do NA, I'd be much more likely to participate if it's something more light and funny rather than a huge angst fest. Like Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, for example (though this often gets classed with YA rather than NA for marketing purposes probably.) I wish there were more NA books like that out there, but do I feel like there's starting to be a wider range of NA. A couple sweeter ones I've read lately are Crazy, Sexy, Ghoulish my GG Andrew and Premature Evacuation by Rachel Shane.

Cora Carmack's Losing It seems more like rom com, so that might be fun.

Some other YA/NAs I'll throw out for recs:
Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson
    Dumplin' by Julie Murphy
More than Music or More than Comics by Elizabeth Briggs

  • I do agree that Cora Carmack's books are much less angsty than most NA books.  There's the Rusk series that's OK.  I did like her other series too.

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

More than Music by Elizabeth Briggs
Sincerely, Carter by Whitney Gracia Williams

  • Are any of these books available through the Kindle Library loan, or would they be somewhat universal on Overdrive? Would that help narrow down some of the choices?
  • I looked up a few of the ones I had heard of, and my library has them on Overdrive.  Some have holds/wait lists, though.  We should try to pick soon.

  • Amy & Roger sounds good, and I also have Since You've Been Gone by the same author on my TBR.

The Devil You Know sounds like it might be a good follow up after The Three was not as horror as we expected in October.  Or maybe no one wants to read any more scary now that Halloween is over.

I really liked the one I read by Huntley Fitzpatrick, and I'd like to read more by her.  I've heard good things about Cora Carmack's stuff, too.  Fair to say I'm up for pretty much anything.  Could someone who knows more about this genre than I do make a poll with 5 or 6 choices for us to vote?
  • Honestly, I've browsed through a lot of these suggestions and I would be happy with any of them.  Here's a few that were suggested that I was particularly interested in.

    The Red Queen
    Falling Kingdoms
    The 5th Wave

How about everyone put in for their top 3 listed in this post and I will make a poll.  Hopefully we can have it decided in the next day or two so everyone has a chance to read them.
