Places where you bleed money

We're having a minor spending crisis in my household.  I found a piano website with a forum dedicated to adult beginners, and I've been buying piano books like they are going out of style.  I think I have bought 4 in the last two days.

My H finally called me at work today and was like, "So you do know that every time you buy something on Amazon I get an email, right?"

Unfortunately for H, this is one of the few places where I have almost no self-control.  I blame my parents.  They were really good at telling me no for most things, but books and sheet music were the major exceptions.  As a result, I consumed a LOT of books and music growing up.

I used to live close to the most amazing used book store in Nashville.  It's basically the size of a Costco, and because it's Nashville they have a ton of sheet music there for pennies.

But then I moved, so Amazon it is.  H is just going to have to get over it.

Re: Places where you bleed money

  • There are worse places to bleed money!!!!

I go in spurts.  Before I got my iPad mini (and before that my Kindle) I would bleed money on books.  Now with the Amazon App I can fill my need for books for free/cheap by seeing what is free or $.99 in the Kindle store.  Sometimes I go through spurts with new music or stuff for the house.

Our current "issue" is with beverages.  We stay in budget, but we spend a lot of money on soda for me and craft beer for DH.

  • Books are a weakness for me too, so I totally get that. Fortunately 2 friends and I realized we like the same type of books so we have started swapping and so I buy 1/3 as many as I used to.

Honestly my biggest thing since ds has been born is probably kids clothes. Even though boys clothes aren't as cute as girls, when I run into good sales or clearances or coupons, I have very little self control. As a result ds probably has too many clothes, but at least his younger brother will also be able to wear most of them in the future :) that's a great point about having 2 boys I guess!

My H pointed out that we already have a bunch of beginner books we picked up at that used bookstore awhile back that I haven't opened yet.  He's right.

Thing is, my personal goal with this is getting to where I can sight-read pieces out of a standard rock/pop book, without having to practice them.  So I will keep up with the method books to slowly build up my technique, but then I need books below level to work on sight-reading.  I had a bit of a breakthrough tonight.  I picked out a piece I had tried (and failed) to play as a kid.  Didn't exactly sight-read it, but it was starting to lay right after about 4x through.  So I can tell that I have learned a lot already, and the sight-reading will come.

My mom is mostly self-taught, and she can sight-read just about any rock/pop/jazz/blues.  I remember the first time she wanted to buy a fake book (it was a Disney book), and my dad thought she was crazy because there was only a melody line with chord notations - no left hand.  He was like, "No way can you just make up the left hand."  My mom calmly sat down at the piano in the music store, opened to a random page, and busted out "Kiss the Girl" like she had been practicing it for years.  The look on my dad's face was priceless.  I want to be able to do that.

But in the meantime I need to collect a lot of easy pieces to practice sight-reading.  This is how I'm justifying it, lol.

  • Craft beer for us, definitely.  If we didn't both enjoy it so much, I think overall spending and consumption would be much lower.  It's almost a hobby; going to a small local brewery to try new beers and have a growler is a really common weekend activity for us.  It basically stays within fun budget, but our fun budget is on the higher side.  We dabbled in brewing our own for a while but that's a colossal money pit!

I think books and sheet music are probably much more defendable places to bleed money!
  • I've recently realized that I bleed money during gift giving occasions. We are generally very frugal, so when I give myself permission to spend money on other people I tend to want to go overboard. For example, we usually restrict ourselves to 1 gift from Santa and 1 gift from us for the kids at Christmas plus stockings. The stockings are going to be busting at the seams and now I'm trying to justify buying tickets for the family to see The Nutcracker or Annie live as a family gift in addition to what's under the tree. I also like to buy for a lot of people (all family) just because I enjoy looking for something that I think will really make someone else happy. I'm not sure anyone in DH's family would get a gift if it was up to him, but I just feel like it's the right thing to do.

Eating out is 100% it for me.

I'm going to sit down with H this weekend and try to come to a healthy solution for our eating out problem. It's been an issue for a while, so I think it's time we address it and especially now that I have a gym membership (only $10 per month!) and have been going regularly but not seeing results. Meal prepping is probably #1 so if we can come up with a plan I might spend Sunday making and freezing crockpot meals.

ETA: I'm also A LOT worse than H with this issue. I will buy lunch out during the week or stop for a quick breakfast on the way to work. Usually it's because I didn't prep my stuff the night before or we don't have stuff I want to eat so I need to tackle that issue too.

Fabric and sewing supplies for sure- I've gotten better over the last few months, but I'm never going to use all that I've accumulated because I work full time. My goal is to make a quilt, sell the remaining (usually half is left or a fat eighth bundle) from the fabrics I used to help pay for long arm quilting fees for the larger quilts (anything above crib size). I've already started doing that and have transferred $320 back to checking. About half of that went to getting the girls' quilts long arm quilted- they look awesome and are all bound for Christmas. DH has helped me too- he only bought me 1 bundle for Christmas, 6 spools of thread for piecing, and also got me a new sliding glass door bookcase so I can display all of my fabric bundles. The one thing that saves me is that I'm such a neat freak that my collection won't get out of control because then it won't look as pretty.

Edit: Had to include some pics of my sewing space  :)

  • There is absolutely no bleeding right now. Not even a drip. We don't buy anything. And we only have $60/month in blow money. I use a decent amount of my blow money for things that are borderline needs like hair stuff or a shirt from plato's closet because I really need some clothes. 8 ore months...

But, back before I got married when I had no debt and considered every month where I spent less than I made to be a success... Back then I would buy about 1 book a week. I always read them, but it was a bit ridiculous.

I also had a phase for a few months where I was spending a lot on makeup and watching makeup tutorials on youtube. But most of that was prep for doing my makeup for the wedding and I almost never wear makeup these days.
  • My most recent obsession is Stitch Fix.  I didn't realize I'd like it quite as much as I do.  I have given myself a budget of $150/month (this is my clothes/accessories budget since I have refrained from buying new clothes anywhere else) but I have gone over budget the last two months because I have liked so many of the items I receive.  I told H I'm going to do one more month and if I go over budget, I will cut back to receiving a shipment every other month because I can't afford it every month.

Other places we occasionally bleed money-

Books for my Kindle if there are good sales, such as Cyber Monday.  I bought 18 new books for approximately $25.  I couldn't resist.

    Hunting supplies/expenses for H

    Renting movies from Amazon

Gifts and donations-I can't seem to say no to all the little $5 and $10 donations for the food bank, or kid's Christmas shopping programs, or school fundraisers, or whatever it is.  That stuff adds up!

Do you find the clothes to be a good deal based on quality/material?? I've thought about checking this out but I don't want to pay a ton for clothes that might be cheap feeling/quality. I have a heck of a time finding clothes I love so I thought this might be fun to try some new pieces.
  • We really don't spend money on stuff, but travel is our weakness. The past few years I'd say we've spent an average of $20,000 a year. 2016 we'll probably spend way less since we're TTC but we do have a ton of miles and hotel points banked if the itch strikes!

This is us, too! Eating out and beer/alcohol are our downfalls. I've been trying very hard to improve at meal planning and not being so cheap at the grocery store, because like you, if we don't have a plan/have food we want for lunch, we eat out. November was better, and I'm really hoping to keep it up in December! But with the holiday craziness I think it will be difficult.

I had gotten a reebok yoga mat 6 years ago and I didn't really use it until about almost 3 years ago when I started yoga.  It was not slippy - I find that some of those gaimi (sp?) mats are too slippery for me.  I had gotten that at Target.  Don't remember the price but it was pretty affordable. With as much yoga as I do now I had to get a better mat because my reebok mat was falling apart.  I got a lulu lemon mat that I'm absolutely in love with - thick and sticky.  It really helps my yoga practice. That was not really MM - around $60

Thanks! I get a little mad at lululemon since they-ahem-don't make my size (even though I'm very happy with my size!), but maybe I'll keep an eye out for holiday sales. The studio has free rentals so that buys me some time.
  • Haha @hoffse I love how he let you know you were busted.

Mine is baby clothes.  My goodness are baby girl clothes adorable.  I will spend my blow money on baby clothes over getting something for myself.  Shopping for DD is so much more fun than any pair of shoes I will buy.

And booze.  I love me some good beer and wine.  So I will visit Hyvee's liquor section and spend money on something good to try.  It's never $10 either.  I rarely get there, so when I do I spend $100.  No wonder I can't keep our grocery budget in check. ;-)

I did Stitch Fix once and I thought the prices were a bit on the high side for the quality.... was similar quality to somewhere like Loft.  I can do better shopping sales.  But just like with any service, you're paying extra for the convenience.  Everything I received in my fix was my style... I'd spend a good 2+ hours in stores finding items that were my style.  I only kept one thing because the rest didn't fit (I read after the fact that you should size down for tops), but everything was really nice.  And the one top I kept?  It was $68, which is way more than I normally would spend on a top.  But, I can wear it for both work and for casual depending on how I do it, and received lots of compliments on it at work.  And, should the need arise, it would even work as a maternity top.

Anyway, I plan on doing it again once my financial situation improves.

Oh!  You mean you don't wear a size 5?  Their version of a large, lol?  That's one of my pet peeves also.  There's a really upscale mall where I live, with a Saks and Tiffany's etc., and one of the stores in there doesn't carry anything larger than a size 10.  Except their size 10s are more like 6s.  And their size 0s and 3s look like they would only fit children (except for the styles), lol.

The snarky comment that runs through my mind every time I pass by is, "Sorry, I work for a living.  I'm not an arm-candy wife who works out with a personal trainer for 2 hours a day and then plays tennis in the afternoon."

I agree that the prices are on the high side, especially for us MMers.  However, I have found the quality to be above-average compared to clothes I usually buy (Kohls, JCPenney, etc.)  I have really enjoyed the service; not because I don't like shopping, but because it takes me out of my comfort zone.  I have had 5 fixes and the same stylist every time.  She really gets my style, and sends me things I never would have looked twice at in the store but end up loving them when I try them on.

It's not even remotely MM, but since I've vowed not to buy any other clothes (except necessities like socks and undies) while I am using Stitch Fix, it's really not that much more than I would spend throughout the year on clothes.  I'm buying fewer items but better quality things.  Plus, I have gotten compliments on every single thing I wear from Stitch Fix, and I love that it's unique and I probably won't see somebody else wearing it.  Especially in a small town where everybody wears the same things from JC Penney or Maurices :)

Thanks ladies for your help! I think I'm going to try it out. :) At least once to see what I get... I'm pretty plain and don't step out of my comfort zone when it comes to clothes so I'm interested to see what they pick for me and what I like. I probably won't do it frequently, but I'll try it out. :)

  • It'd have to be craft and home decor stores. Kirklands and Hobby Lobby are the big ones because i don't go often but  Micheals, AC Moore or Joannes happens all too often... Ofcourse then I buy all this stuff and remember I'm a mother and I have no time for crafts. lol

I had a 20% off coupon to Kirklands for black friday and I lost it so we didn't go.... now i'm secretly wondering if my husband threw it out. lol but not to worry i'm sure there will be another sale ;)

Ofcourse there is always Maurices, I can't walk in that store without blowing 100 bucks.

Thanks! I get a little mad at lululemon since they-ahem-don't make my size (even though I'm very happy with my size!)
, but maybe I'll keep an eye out for holiday sales. The studio has free rentals so that buys me some time.

You can check out Manduka mats too. I hear they are great. It annoys me too about the sizing. I have to wear a size bigger in their pants. Same with alo yoga pants.

My most recent obsession is Stitch Fix.

Very good point about the uniqueness.  Around here it's JC Penney, Kohl's, or Costco.  I got sad when a lady who was old enough to be my mother came into my office wearing the same top as me, from Costco LOL

The discount with them if you buy all items actually works out great too.  I would have done that had the items they sent fit me.
  • Those look awesome, @vlagrl29 ! I should probably go Target for now though. Maybe if I'm still at it in six months or so...

Also Jade is a good brand.  I just got my lulu lemon this October after seriously practicing a little over a year. Used my Rebock up until then and it started shedding and getting small holes.

  • I love books but I am a library person, I adore borrowing books.  I only own books that I want to read over and over again.  I think I have maybe 15 books and 7 of those are the Harry Potter series.

Despite this I tend to bleed money on books for my kids - I always order a few from their Scholastic order forms and I love getting seasonal or holiday books for them.

No one asked my opinion but I've been seriously practicing yoga for 8 years and teaching for 4 so I have tried so many brands of yoga mats over the years.  My students who get Gaiam mats often complain about them being super slippery and I find that they tend to spread/stretch out. I used one for about a year but didn't realize how much better a mat could be. My mom has a hugger mugger mat that she likes and you can get one in the $30 price range.  I've used it once and it was pretty good. I have two manduka mats (one in my car for teaching/taking classes and one for home practice), had a jade (left it in the sun and destroyed the rubber), and we have a jade at home that is my husbands - the manduka is slippery at first but amazing and I love it, one I have had for 5-6 years now.

Thank you for your opinion! I'll look into higher mugger. Slipperiness is my number one concern since I sweat quite a bit. That's awesome that you teach. I'm really enjoying getting back into it. I sort of fell out of it a few years ago when my studio started pushing the raw juice cleanses and such a bit harder than I prefer and the vibe got kind of weird. I think I've found one that's a great fit in my new city though.

Plan to Eat has been a life saver for me. A friend introduced me to it last year. They run a black Friday sale for half off. I missed it but still plan to renew my subscription. I like that I easily plan meals for the week, print the grocery list, scratch off what we already half and head to the store. It's been good for planning and staying on budget!
