Re: Monday Accountability Thread

  • 1.  Not MM at all.  I'm actually shocked at myself for starting this thread.  We spent around $150 on Christmas Presents at the local farmers' market/craft market.  On the bright side, we're both almost done.  We then spent $90 on a night out with friends, trying an amazing restaurant in our city that we've been dying to get to.  I remember in the last NYC thread many people talked about Momofuku; this restaurant was opened by a former sous chef there.  We bought our friends a round of drinks while waiting for a table.  Finally, we spent $140 to sign up for another round of obedience classes.  It was all budgeted, but still feeling the sticker shock.  We're in agreement that we need to lay low for a while, after getting through some holiday events next weekend of course.

    2.  Tomorrow is payday, and I'll be putting over $1,000 to a combination of Care Credit and cash flowing budgeted purchases already charged to our regular credit card.

    3.  Avocados were on sale this week, so we're making vegetarian burritos with avocado on top.  It's just rice, black beans (seasoned nicely!), salsa, and avocado.  I may add some kale to the black beans.

    1. Good! We had H's work holiday party on Friday night, so we had dinner on the company dime. Saturday was had lunch out and wine for dinner. Sunday it was rainy and we didn't even leave the house!!

    2. H received a nice holiday bonus so we put $250 towards our washer/dryer purchase and $750 toward his student loan.

    3. Leftover baked chicken and Parmesan spaghetti squash.

ETA: We did spend about $600 on various gift cards over the weekend, which puts us at about 80% of the way done with Christmas shopping (we have $1,200 budgeted). Anyone have a final suggestion for my brother - a 30 year old single guy who likes movies and video games? I've already got him $120 in Netflix giftcards but would like to spend $100-$130 more...

  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?  It wasn't too bad, considering I finished up Christmas shopping.  I went about $80 over budget, but that's because I grabbed a couple of wishes off of a giving tree for developmentally disabled adults and bought them some gifts.  So I'm okay with being over-budget for that reason :)

    2.  Any progress towards your goals? Nothing new.

    3.  What's for dinner tonight? I have no idea.  I have a meeting to go to at 6, so it could quite possibly be cold cereal.  We've been on a Corn Chex kick lately.

How about a gift subscription to Loot Crate?  H runs right on the edge of a gamer type of crowd, and many of them subscribe to and enjoy Loot Crate.  I've also found the people at Game Stop to be generally pretty helpful with picking out physical gifts if you know what system he likes and a vague idea of the types of games he's into.
  • 1.  How MM was your weekend? I don't know exactly how much we spent on Christmas gifts Saturday (I know the total we've spent on Xmas gifts so far, though - $257). $12 on lunch at the mall. $20-something at Target. $20 to church, and then $20 donation to a parish family in need. $8 on a tin of homemade cookies that are a church fundraiser, as a gift to our neighbors. $33 on groceries.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals? Nothing new here, either.

    3.  What's for dinner tonight? Probably leftovers, or possibly tacos.

If he likes beer at all, a beer of the month club gift could be good. I've gotten that for my brother a couple of times, and he's really enjoyed it. It's pricey, so I only get a couple of months, but for the price you are considering you might be able to do half a year or something.
  • 1. How MM was your weekend?
    - $39 at the farm supply store for a dog leash and collar and a couple of Christmas presents. $190 at the grocery store for our weekly stuff and for some of the food for Christmas dinner (we're hosting.) $29 to fill my gas tank, and $29 for snacks and a bottle of wine to take to my boss' house for a Christmas party.

    2. Any progress towards your goals?
    - None this week.

    3. What's for dinner tonight?
    - Not sure, it's not my night. H will get home first tonight, so he's responsible for dinner : )

Agree with the Loot Crate suggestion for him! Also if you know what specific games and movies he's into there's usually a neat variety of fan-related stuff at FYE and thinkgeek.com. Good luck!!

Thank you, thank you! Loot Crate is perfect. He lives in a rural area and doesn't like to come to the city, so this will be great. He's so hard to shop for - makes plenty of money that he doesn't spend (and not a dime of debt!), doesn't car about cars or clothes, and still lives at home with my mom.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?

    3.  What's for dinner tonight?

    1.  Pretty good overall. I returned some stuff I had ordered online to the mall so +$40. I also failed to find anything in my size on that trip to the mall so I didn't spend the money I expected to on new pants. Spent about $45 on a gas fill up, $25 on pizza takeout Friday night and that's it. We didn't grocery shop since we'll be travelling for the holidays and I want to use up everything we have before we leave. It'll be a week of creative meals lol.

    2.  Once our paychecks post tomorrow I'll deposit $3000 to our house down payment savings account which will put us about 120% over our goal so we're happy about that. Thinking about opening up another investment account or at least a CD with the extra so that we can make a little more on it before hopefully spending on home-related items next year.  We'll make more progress next month when we both get our year end bonuses from work and our raises kick in, plus our Christmas shopping sprees will be paid off.

    3.  Tonight will probably be veggie burgers or leftover pizza for us. Something in the fridge or freezer...

  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?
Eh... ok.  Not fantastic but not as bad as it could have been.  I got paid Friday.  Paid my usual scheduled bills, and also spent $30 on my face moisturizer, $115 at Costco (which included a gift for H's nephew, but I'm deducting that amount from the money I give H to help pay the mortgage), $60 at the grocery store, and $28 on postage for our holiday cards.

I also had $65 worth of stuff in my Sephora cart, and forgot to click the "check out" button.  It's probably good I forgot though, because it looks like things will be tight just because of Christmas.  It's stuff I need, but can hold out til my next check.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
    I transferred $200 to savings.

    3.  What's for dinner tonight?
I'm going out to dinner with my office to Carabba's (not my choice, whatsoever).  The company is paying for the food portion, we just have to pay for drinks.  I pulled $20 in cash out to cover those.  We are doing an ornament exchange, and I used part of a Target gift card I had to buy that.
  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?
Really cheap because we are traveling this weekend.  I think we spent like $30 total, and most of it was stocking up on some travel things we need and wrapping paper.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
My bonus came in on Friday!  We aren't going to spend any of it until we are back from Europe and see how those expenses shake out, but we are eyeing some furniture for our family room.  We still have our apartment furniture back there, and it's comical.  We have been in the house for 18 months, we have a living room, family room, and a finished basement, and we still do not own a couch.

Also, my H was also informed of his bonus, and we're hoping he gets it this week before we leave.

H and I also both advanced to the next level.

    3.  What's for dinner tonight?  Probably leftovers.  We made a big curry last night to eat down some ingredients in the fridge.

Pretty good. $50 more on Christmas gifts. Only 6 more gifts left to buy and we're right on track for our $360 budget. About $82 on groceries including a ton of meat sales for later in the month meals. $17 on fuel.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
$1087 towards student loans, current balance at $20,554

    3.  What's for dinner tonight?
Meatloaf muffins! with mashed potatoes (instant) and green beans (canned). pretty simple but sooo good.
  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?

Eh, I can't even remember because I had another long weekend LOL. Whatever we may have bought was paid for in cash, but I don't think we did many errands at all. We have enough to pay for right now!! See below.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?

Paid for Bose radio, oil for the house and our furniture deposit. We also paid our last Lowe's bill which we used for our new Xmas tree. We have one last home depot bill to pay with Xmas lights then we are done shopping at these places for now.

    3.  What's for dinner tonight?

    Left over chicken stirfry

    1.  How MM was your weekend? Pretty good - groceries ($148), new winter coat for me ($188- coming in the mail, so hopefully it'll be a keeper). I spent ALL Sunday cleaning the house and prepping meals for the week ($0).

    2.  Any progress towards your goals? $500 to savings.
$1000 to vacation fund- we're up to $8500 and I just priced out a 6 day trip to Disney with nonstop airfare for 4 for $5500 over February break... I'm tempted to book it!

** EDITED- cut the trip by 2 days and we got it under $4000.. thinking 6 days might be too much for a 3 and 5 year old, but we might book it tonight! They're going to be so excited! **

    3.  What's for dinner tonight? homemade mac-n-cheese with broccoli and chicken. Fruit and yogurt for the girls too.. one of their favorites.  :)

    Oh boy....
I ran a ton of errands and spent $312 total.
H made an 8 hour drive to go pick up a car with his friend.  They spent $221 between gas, food, and a hotel.
    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
H had some overtime from last week, so that covered the extra expenses from this weekend.  We also moved things around in our budget to accommodate it as well.
    3.  What's for dinner tonight?
Braised chicken legs, mashed red potatoes with swiss, and sweet corn.

Really good!  Friday spent $9 on BK for H and I.  We had coupons so it came out cheap.  Saturday, spent $3.31 at Walgreens for a drink and power bar while doing my p/t job hotel pic run.

$12.31 for the whole weekend.  We spent the rest of Sat. at home and all day Sun.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?

    $1500 to HELOC balance.

Not an MM goal, but I made good progress in decluttering my house.  Cleared out five totes either through Goodwill donations or throwing things out.

    3.  What's for dinner tonight?

I think I'd like to go to some of y'all's houses for dinner tonight!  We'll probably be having spaghetti with meat sauce and a salad.
  • 1. How MM was your weekend?
Good! $50 at Target. That's it.

    2. Any progress towards your goals?
Christmas shopping is almost complete and we're doing really good staying on budget!

    3. What's for dinner tonight?
Chicken on spring mix salad greens.

Really good! Made a couponing trip to Target, and I saved about 70%. A couple items I got for free (makeup and Truvia brown sugar blend). Also, instead of having to take out a loan for school in January, my mom offered to loan me the money at 1% interest. So that'll help me pay down my existing loans faster.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?

Money that goes toward debt has already been allocated this month, so no more progress until next month.

    3.  What's for dinner tonight?

We had baked lemon pepper chicken with some mixed veggies and cheddar biscuits.

Question: why do we only do a weekend check-in instead of something for the whole week?
  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?
Not bad. H has been working weekends and I find we spend so much less when we aren't together on the weekends. $45 at Petco, $20 for pizza with my sister, $12 for random things while shopping, and then $30 at Kirklands but I used a gift card.
    2.  Any progress towards your goals? Nothing major this week. Booked our rooms for our trip in June and paid off the deposits on my CC already. I also haven't used my credit card for purchases which is a big win for me.

    3.  What's for dinner tonight? We went out last night to get wings at local place by us. It's only $4 for 8 wings. :)

My understanding is to help keep everyone accountable because people tend to spend more on the weekend.

I started it once and tried to do it for the week, but the consensus was it was too much time to remember the details for. I'd feel free to share stuff for your week, though, if you find it helpful. I do sometimes. I'm not going to go crazy on a Thursday night out and then claim a MM weekend :-D
  • 1. Our weekend was really good. It was raining so bad, and football was on so we didn't leave the house Saturday. Sunday we went to some church events (donated $15 to the charity it was supporting) and then ran an errand to target ($90 diapers mostly) and then dinner out (35). This was actually the first time we've eaten out in a long time, dh's diet is saving is a lot in that regards because it's just easier to stay in and cook than to let him get around all sorts of temptations.

    2. Nothing really tangible yet. It wasn't a pay week, so no extra into our e fund. I did work on a new budget for January/February assuming we do sell the house and holy crap is it going to seem like we have a ton of $ all of a sudden. It was leaner than our normal budget because we still want to save extra for our e fund, but I had $1200 extra for us to save in a normal month! (With insurance/taxes/etc the house is costing us about $5-600 a month. Vacant property insurance is expensive!!)

    3. Probably left over Mexican food for me, and a salad for dh. Exciting dinner plans

  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?
Good.  Friday we went to a free play and actually walked to it!
Sat we did volunteer work and played games with friends.  I used ingredients in the house to make cookies for the game night.
Sunday was our first dinner out this month.  My MOH gave us a gift card for our anniversary to a local craft beer pub that we really like.  We had some burgers and a winter beer sampler.  After the gift card total was only $17 and we had a really nice evening out.
    $28 gas and $15 groceries

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
We have a lot in motion right now so hard to know where we stand but with menu planning we have been keeping spending pretty low so far this month.

    3.  What's for dinner tonight?
When H was at our local Chick-fil-A buying our cow calendar he noticed a flyer for a special today.  We will go in for dinner tonight and then take our receipt back in January and get everything on it for free during that visit.

Although I usually do just keep it weekends, if I had something notable happen during the week, I'll throw it in there or just add it to my details for Friday.
  • 1.  Very good!  I attempted to drop our cable and they ended up lowering our bill so that the cable is now free in lieu of cancelling completely.  We only get 8 channels anyway but it was a nice perk.  DH got unlock codes for our phones as we're moving to a cheaper plan.  The bad news is a stomach bug hit our house but the good news is we didn't go out or spend any money lol.

    2. The cable and phone were both part of our attempts to lower the budget, so definitely progress.  Our big goal is to throw this last paycheck of the year ("extra" paycheck) into savings.  We're doing great staying in budget so far so fingers crossed we can do it!

    3.  Grilled cheese and tomato soup by request of the kids.  My stomach still isn't 100% so toast for me!
  • 1.Ours started out great but ended horribly. We have DD's birthday party next Saturday and we did a Costco run for it. While there we found all 10 seasons of the original TMNT on DVD. It was spendy but Amazon couldn't beat the price. So overall, $200 at Costco, $4 dollar store, $4 JC Penny (DD x'mas dress for next year for $2.45!), and some Christmas presents at Kohl's ($25) and Bed Bath and Beyond ($25). I used coupons everywhere but the dollar store and Costco.

    2. I only have one credit card left with a balance on it! Last month I paid off the last of my $20,000 in credit card debt and have snowballed that payment into the one for this card. It should be gone by June or July!

    3. Chicken wings(hooters copy cat recipe) and fries! At least that is the plan right now, we will see how I feel when we actually get home tonight!

Side note: I work at a non-profit as a DV advocate. We do adopt a family every year. This year an organization adopted 35 families but only brought in gifts for 10 of them. It is so hard not to take on one of the families. I still haven't decided if I will rearrange my budget and make it up next month, or not. This has been weighing heavily on me all day. I got adopted several times as a kid, sometimes they were the only gifts I got too.

That is so sad, why did they only do gifts for 10 of them?  Our church participates in a program like that and one of the ladies actually specifically  takes last-minute kids that either just arrive (it's a program for refugees) or ones that nobody picks (usually teen boys sadly) or if someone can't go through with their gift.  I hope someday to have the resources to do that too, I feel for you in this situation!

We can only afford one child as well, I chose the same girl I had last year not realizing she asked for a bike!  We were able to get her everything else on the list (we go in together with my parents) but a bike wasn't in our budget at all.  I hope she still likes everything and isn't disappointed.
