Hiring cleaning help

I can't believe I'm posting this because it's the MM board, but I know one or two posters have hired cleaning help in the past.  How does this arrangement work for you, and what do you pay?

Work has picked up for my H a lot.  He has worked every weekend since the beginning of November, with the exception of our trip.  He keeps getting assigned to trials.  It's wonderful that he's getting so much experience, but it's incredibly time consuming.

The bulk of the house work has started falling on me, but I get overwhelmed by how much there is to do once the weekend rolls around.  We have pets and both of us are usually too tired after work to do much to maintain it throughout the week.  I am also in class 4 nights per week until the end of February, and recently I haven't been getting home until around 8 pm.  H has been working even later than that, since the beginning of November.  No end in sight.

For those of you who hire cleaning help, how often do they come?  Do you feel that it is worth the cost?  Have you ever had issues with theft?

Alternatively, I have considered investing in a Roomba because the cat hair in our house is probably the hardest thing to control.  I despise vacuuming, and I have to do it at least a couple nights per week to prevent the cat hair from building up.  Over the long run it would be cheaper than hiring help, but it only does one thing.

We don't have a cleaning person, but a co-worker of mine does. She pays $60/week and that's for the entire house (2,500 sq ft, 4 beds, 2.5 baths, kitchen- I think she's there for about 3 hours). The woman she uses used to be part of a cleaning service company but later left to go on her own. With the cleaning service company, it was $80 per cleaning. She never had an issue with theft in the house- the cleaning service company was using her credit card # for other purchases (zappos, wayfair, etc) so she term'd her relationship with them quickly and her cleaning lady left at about the same time. My co-worker loves it- she has a baby and a great dane and her house stays nice and clean. It's definitely something I've been looking into- once day care is done!

  • I want a Roomba! I'm a cat person so I completely understand!

My aunt does housekeeping on a part time basis. She enjoyed it when my cousins were in school because she only worked during the school day, summers were different. Most people I know who hire cleaning services, hires someone through word of mouth. I know there's risks of hiring privately verses a cleaning company but for those that I know, it's worked out well.

My friend has someone come in 1x weekly for about 3 or 4 hrs to do heavier tasks (scrub floors, dusting, Windows, etc). I'd say pay is going to be dependent on COL.

  • I don't judge with cleaning help.  If I worked full time and having DD I would be hiring a cleaning person.  There is only so much 1 person can do.

  • I just wanted to say I cannot WAIT til I have the money to hire a cleaning person.

My neighbor has someone that comes weekly, and she said it's like $300/mo for an 1850 sq ft house.  From my research, it would be more per visit the less often they come.

I cannot wait til I have the money to hire a cleaning person to come once or twice a month :)
  • Yup, it is probably one of the least MM things there is, but we have a cleaning person.  We started when my husband started working 50-60 hours  a week.  I have a fulltime professional job & work long hours so to have to do all the cooking, laundry, cleaning etc on top of it was way too much.  Not MM, but great for the marriage! haha

We pay $70 for an every other week cleaning.  We use a private women (aka not a big company). She does everything and does an amazing job - I know they do a good job based on the obvious that things are clean, but also because I am compulsive about my home and I usually spend two days after shifting everything back to where it goes but I know they are moving things.  My mom had been using her for years so I felt comfortable letting her into my house from the start.  I wouldn't let someone in without a reliable reference from someone I know, but that's just me.

I don't know if I would find every week to be worth it, it would depend on cost, usually the more frequently you have someone come the lower their rate goes.  I think that monthly is rarely a great deal, since you pay so much more for the infrequent cleaning that for minimal money more you can get every other week. Every other week is a perfect balance of cost for us (and my parents, as well as most people I know with house cleaners).

I usually vacuum 1-2 times in between since I make a mess in the kitchen and the dog makes a mess, but I usually do a pretty superficial clean (don't move furniture etc) since I know a deep clean is always coming.  I will wipe down stove/countertops/bathrooms as needed but again, superficially. We have a 2bed/2bath 1100 sq/ft home and I probably spend less than 1 hour cleaning in two weeks (excluding laundry/my kitchen messes).
  • If you don't like cleaning and don't want to spend the time on it getting a cleaning person is well worth the money, imo.  When I come home to a clean house that was professionally done it is like I am a kid on Christmas morning.

I had an individual when I was single.  She was the best and gave me a really good rate.  She would only give me the option of 1x per month or 2x per month.  Every 3 weeks would have been ideal since I was a neat person to begin with.

Now that I live with H and a dog we need person every other week, no question.  I started looking into people and found a small business that would do every other week for $70.  This was for 1BR, 1.5 bath, kitchen, living room, and bathroom break for the dog  Not much square footage total.  Sadly, this is on hold until H finds employment.

It is a sellers market.  If you can find someone that can do a good job and is reliable I suggest that you are willing to pay a slight premium if needed.  Some will charge a flat rate, others want to charge by the hour.
  • We've had help in the past. Most recently we had someone come every other week and we paid $100/visit for a 1,400 sq ft house. It was totally worth it when we could afford it because it meant that we could spend our non-working time doing family activities rather than just chores around the house. I think I would ideally have someone come once a week because bathrooms and, to some extent, the kitchen should really be cleaned that often. It has never been affordable for us to do that, though, so we have either accepted a little less cleanliness or done spot cleaning in those places every other week ourselves. In contrast to pp, we have 2 kids, so our level of messiness is probably much higher. Every other week would probably be fine if it was just DH and myself.

We've never had any trouble with theft. Cleaning quality has varied somewhat, though. In general I would say no one has cleaned quite as thoroughly or deeply as I do when I do it myself, but they have still done a very good job. I spend more than 3 hours to clean the house, so it makes sense that they can't do quite as much since that's about how long we pay for them to be here. When we've had someone help with cleaning, I just give up on my standards and accept that there might be dust under some of the furniture because they don't move everything to mop (or whatever I would do differently).

I actually had the most trouble when I hired a company rather than an individual. It was a small, local company and for some reason they frequently had to reschedule. They also required us to purchase and maintain a supply of certain cleaning supplies that they preferred, which I found a little annoying. I think really, though, I didn't like them because the owner just wasn't very professional. We've had some scheduling problems when working with individuals as well. Most of the people we have hired have been mothers, so when there was a sick child or whatever, they sometimes couldn't come when expected. They were all very good about letting us know, though, and getting us rescheduled as soon as they could.
  • No judgment here!  Time is money.  Even if you aren't replacing the extra time you'll gain with more hours at work, it's still more time you'll have for you in your already busy schedule.

Although I don't have a regular cleaning person, I actually just hired a cleaning service for the first time last week.  Now I am kicking myself I've never done it before.  It was for an empty rental unit, so theft wasn't a concern.  But, what would have taken me probably two long days to complete, they finished in a few hours for $70.  I'm about to put my new duplex up for rent and am going to hire them again to clean those units.

The person I hired is actually a neighbor, so it was word of mouth.  A different neighbor was getting too old to live by himself anymore and had to move out of his house.  He had lived there forever, was senile, and I doubt the house was in very good shape.  House Cleaner Neighbor cleaned that guy's whole house in one day and the family was able to move someone else in right away.

  • Thanks for the insight and lack of judgment!  I'm just really tired.  H started a 2 week trial today, and if his time hasn't freed up by the end of it I might just bite the bullet.  We also have the issue that our families and best friends are all out of town, so we travel a good bit to see them.  We just aren't home enough to clean as often as we need to.

Even when H is home he's so tired he just wants to relax.  H works so much that I can't really begrudge him that luxury, especially since his year-end bonus is tied to his hours.  He's going to be financially compensated for all this extra work.

If we could get a deep clean every other week, that would be amazing and would free up so much time.  That might be the way to start and then see if we need to increase it at all.  I'll ask around the office for recs.  I know a few of the other women hire help because they have found themselves in this same position.

  • DO IT!!! We have done it once before for a deep clean of the main living spaces. We paid 120 dollars I believe and it was AMAZING. I have never seen my house so clean--If I could, I would do it every month, and actually I might start doing that once my Car is paid off this year--time is money like someone said. it is one purchase I will never regret!
  • I've often thought about getting a cleaning person just to do a deep clean of the bathrooms and kitchen every other week.  I haven't been able to justify it yet, before it was because I was out of work and now I work from home.

For a few weeks I was doing a daily chore chart which helped a lot, but the holidays got busy and I got lazy.

I had it split up that I had a two week rotation of chores with a monthly "big project" chore.

    Sunday: Grocery Shopping/Errands
Monday: Dust Upstairs (week 1) Dust Downstairs (week 2)
Tuesday: Vacuum Upstairs (week 1) Vacuum Downstairs (week 2)
    Wednesday: Laundry & Toilets
Thursday: Mop bathrooms upstairs (week 1) mop downstairs (week 2)
    Friday: Meal plan
    Saturday: Kitchen and bathrooms

When I was following the plan it helped a lot.  Most of the tasks just take a few minutes and if you stick with it even the deep cleaning of the kitchen and bathroom doesn't take that long.

We had a cleaning person come for about 6 months before we started getting serious about debt elimination. We paid $150 for once a month for a 1,000 square foot house with one bathroom. At that time, we hired a private individual, but if we ever did it again, I would ONLY go through a company to ensure they were fully and appropriately insured and vetted (I'd be much more worried about an accident in my home than theft). She was expensive but very thorough, even wiping down the blinds and cleaning the inside of the oven. This is the first thing I'm going to add back into the budget once our student loans are paid off this summer.

ETA: Oh, and I freaking love my Roomba. We only have hardwoods and no pets, but it's amazing how much it picks up every day!

ETA:  And I have two big dogs--they have short hair so you would think the hair wouldn't be an issue, but the Roomba is able to pick up hair and dust every single day.  It's amazing!

Potentially silly Roomba question-does it have a way to handle corners?  That's where the dog hair tends to collect for us.

Hoffse, nothing to add to your original question except that it sounds like a good choice for you guys!  I would love to hire cleaning help in a couple of years, but there's no room in the budget right now without cutting something like travel that I feel more strongly about.

It doesn't always get all the way into a corner; there might be a few inches of space in that 90* angle it can't reach.  Those are the spots I hit with a vacuum, but it literally takes me 5 minutes on the weekend to just hit the corners.  Once you've had it for awhile, you learn which spots are too tight and where to check.
  • I'll admit, H and I don't work terribly crazy hours but I've been thinking about looking into hiring a cleaning service. No excuse except for that we're just not very good at keeping up with cleaning. I probably won't ever do it because I'm cheap, but it's fun to think about.
  • Yeah I think one of the struggles I'm having with this is that I really really want help.  On the other hand, we have a few more things we want to accomplish with the house this year.  Nothing on the scale of last year, but things like buying a couch... we don't own a couch.  Stuff like that.  We plan on TTC at the end of the year, and we want to accomplish those last few things before our financial priorities really shift.

I've wondered if the Roomba would take the pressure off enough, at least until we get past the bigger purchases we are planning on making this year.  We ought to have enough in savings to cover most of what we want to do already, but keeping that extra $100-$200 in our budget would obviously help.  I think the first half of the year will be much spendier than the second half.... and we have a couple loans that will be done this fall, and I will FINALLY be done floating money for my LLM degree.  All my reimbursements should catch up this fall.

I actually have enough credit on Amazon to buy a Roomba without paying any money out of pocket for it.  Are the Roombas good enough that I could probably get to the late summer/early fall before hiring somebody?

Unfortunantly  I am the cleaning lady and unfortunately I do have time for it lol  :(

But I am in need of a good chef .......

  • MIL used to clean houses for a living. When I first graduated college I cleaned with her on my day off from my primary job. She let me take over 2 of her houses and each one paid $100 a visit, every other week. One was about 2000 square feet, the other was probably wabout 1300. One had a dog, one didn't. One lady mandated that her floors be cleaned by hand, so her 1300 sq ft probably took longer than the larger one. I hated doing it, but at 22 and drowning in student loans, I needed the money. I did it for about a year. Now I could never hire cleaning help because H would never, ever trust someone in our house. There isn't a soul alive that has our garage code or a spare key to our house.

Like on your hands and knees?  Hell no.  That's crazy.

I used to be like your H, but I was forced to get over it when we had our kitchen done.  We had a bunch of guys we had never met traipsing through our house, and it was completely fine.  Honestly, we don't have much that's valuable anyway outside of our instruments and a couple pieces of jewelry.  Like I said, we don't even have a couch yet!

Do you not have a family member with spare keys?  Our parents each have a set of keys to our house for a "just in case" kind of thing.  They live a couple hours away, but it's come in handy when they have come to visit and we haven't been able to get off work right away to meet them.

I haven't read through all the responses, so sorry if I'm repeating things.
I actually currently work as an independent contractor for a cleaning company. The company has three different options for cleaning: 1-hr. 1x per week, 2.5-hrs. every other week, or 4 hours with 2 housekeepers once a month. We bring our own cleaning supplies to the home. I'm not really sure what they charge; I would assume maybe double what they pay me? So $50, $100, $300 (based on two housekeepers)?

I would say the once a week for an hour cleaning is hard. I only have one client that I do that for, and they have me rotate what I clean because I wouldn't be able to get everything done otherwise. Most people do the every other week cleaning. It definitely helps if things are picked up/put away, but I can do a decent clean of a 3-4 bedroom, 2-3 bath house in that amount of time. I usually recommend people do the 4 hour cleaning twice a year to get a really thorough clean (that usually gives us enough time to clean ceiling fans, baseboards, interior windows, etc).

    Hope that helps!

Yep. On my hands and knees. It was the PITS. But I get it, when you're paying someone to work, you want what you want.

No family or friends have keys or the garage code. No one. H is crazy about trusting people in our home and in his space. He's seen a lot in his line of work, so I kind of understand. But he's nuts. Haha.
  • I've looked into this recently. One thing that would be important to me is that the company the person works for does background checks and is insured and bonded.

  • I have hired in the past, but have always fired the person.  They just don't clean well enough to make it worthwhile for me, but if you aren't as picky as me, it's a HUGE time saver.  I always ended up cleaning anyway and I felt like I was throwing the money away.

I'm really not picky at all, and I can probably tolerate more mess than I should.  I just don't have the time/energy to maintain it the way we need to.

@lbonga the recommendation to do a 2x/year really deep clean is a great idea.  I'll keep that in mind when pricing this out.

  • Alot of people in my neighborhood (and social/work circle) have cleaning people.  I can't bring myself to do it.  Mostly because I'd be cleaning in advance of the cleaning lady coming.  I wouldn't be able to help it.  And the other part of me just isn't comfortable with a stranger in our house.

That said, we have no pets or kids, so I'm sure our cleaning requires less effort.  But I admit, there are plenty of times I'm just tired - I feel like I'm wiping dust off of baseboard heaters and baseboardS in general ALL. THE. TIME!  No judgement here!
  • We've been considering a cleaning person because it's just hard to do things with a 15 month old wandering around getting into everything, but honestly, I have a hard time paying someone to do something that isn't that hard to do especially if I'm just sitting there with the kid.  But we're so behind on everything. :(

  • I finally hired a cleaning lady about 6 months ago. Best decision ever! First she was coming every three weeks. This way I never had to do a heavy clean, just maintenance through out the weeks. This year she is coming every other week. Plus, in the summer she pulls my weeds, walks my dog, and cleans the house. She charges me $20 an hour. She is usually in and out within two and a half hours. I don't have big house, but she does everything. This includes cleaning the bathrooms, kitchen with eat-in, three bedrooms, an office, the living room and dining room. My floors are all hard wood. My H's work schedule is so irregular and he's traveling again.  I work 45 hours a week at an extremely high volume law office. (OP I'm sure you can relate, our associates and partners are always on the go). My advice to you, is DO IT! Every other week.

As for finding one, ask your friends and co-workers. We found her though H's friend, co-worker and he lives in the neighborhood, too. The cleaning lady lives a few blocks over. She is a retired auto worker.

  • Update: H got out of his trial a little early yesterday and surprised me by straightening up the house before I got home from class.  He knocked a few things off the list I was going to try to get to before the weekend.

I literally sat in the middle of my living room and started to cry because I was so relieved and tired.  Poor H - he had no idea what to do.

I think he finally realized how much this has been bothering me.  We're going to try to make some time this weekend to develop a house maintenance schedule so that it doesn't pile up through the week, and then we're going to look at our budget to find room for a Roomba and/or help.

MIL used to clean houses for a living.

Haha.
I get on my hands and knees and clean my deep clean my floors every 8 weeks
