Well, we were supposed to go to my parents new condo in Florida in May (only have to pay for flights, car, groceries and entertainment) but we opted out of it so that we can get projects done around the house. We'd rather spend the money doing this (not me lol), but I know it's the right decision. I'm still taking a week off for this though.

We have a Cape Cod wedding in Sept so we will make a long weekend out of that and hit up Newport on the way.

We are also planning our big 5 year wedding anniversary by going back to Sandals in May 2017. I think it will be the Antigua St John one this time so that will be something to save up for as they are $$$$$. But something to look forward too! has anyone been to this one?

  • We have our big trip to Amsterdam in March which I'm starting to get really excited about.  I know a lot of people here are interested in Amsterdam so I'll plan to report back!

Other than that, we really should get to Florida to visit H's dad and SM.  They don't ever come north, so if we don't go there we don't see them and it has been about a year now.  I'll try to pay for that trip mostly with credit card points.  They house and feed us, so it's not too bad, although we usually try to get out and do some activities while they are working.

In addition, we have a couple of weddings in Vermont in October, and want to visit H's aunt on the Cape, but that is a very short drive for us.  We're TTC now, so we won't start planning any more major trips beyond wedding and family visits until we see how that goes.

In Oct I'll go to Australia with my aunt for 2 weeks.  She'll be 71 then and while she is still very active and fit, she doesn't know how much longer she will want to do the crazy long flights.  I'm glad I have my blow money saved up to go with her.  This will be my 6th continent!

Maybe we'll do a weekend visiting someone in DC or Ohio during the summer.  We have to see if H is working and then see what his schedule is.

Where are you going in Australia? Have you already booked your flights? We loved Australia, but if you haven't already planned it all out, you might think about a long layover in New Zealand - it's incredible!! We liked Auckland and Wellington the best.

  • We are not sure where we are going yet, but we are planning a long weekend trip that is within driving distance sometime this year with my H's parents and sister. We are thinking either Wisconsin Dells or maybe a cabin at Turkey Run in Indiana.

Later this year we will plan a cruise with my H's family for 2017. We are thinking maybe Eastern or Southern Carribbean. We did a Western Caribbean cruise with them in 2015. We drove to Galveston, TX from central IL this last time, and decided we are DEFINITELY flying to the port city next time.
  • We're joining my in-laws at a house they've rented in Nova Scotia at the end of July. We did a road trip through that area a couple years ago and loved it, so I'm really excited to be back.

Then we're going to try to visit my parents on St. Lucia over Christmas. They live overseas and move around a lot, so I actually haven't gone to see them since 2012. I see them when they come to the States about once a year but it's past time for us to make the effort. Not that I'm complaining! It will be a great trip, but I do wish it was cheaper/easier to visit them.
  • @als1982 I can't think of too many specific Boston activities that center around Memorial Day weekend, but I will say that it's a fabulous time of year to be in the city.  The weather tends to be very good.  In my opinion, some of the best ways to spend that trip would include seeing a game at Fenway and doing a whale watch.  They leave right from the New England Aquarium, which is downtown and very cool in its own right.  You're a little ahead of peak whale season, but I bet you'd still see a few.  I think whale watches are one of the coolest things MA has to offer.  It's unreal how large these creatures are and how close they come (by their own choice) to the boats.
If you happen to be a music fan, there's usually a big alternative festival called Boston Calling that weekend.  I haven't gone but I've heard good things.  It's right downtown in an area called Government Center and you're allowed to leave to get food and then go back.  There's also a big half marathon called the Run to Remember on the Sunday.

    @kmurphy any other Boston ideas?

@csuave I definitely second the New Zealand recommendation if you can make it.  I studied abroad in Australia, and when asked to pin down my favorite place, I usually have to concede that I most enjoyed the week I spent on the South Island of New Zealand.  Qantas and Air New Zealand will usually allow you to do a free stopover in either Auckland, Fiji, Tahiti, or the Cook Islands if you book your travel to Australia through them.  Fiji is great too, and worth a stop even if you only have a couple of days.  It's a total paradise, but once you're off the plane everything is CHEAP.
  • @hoffse Wisconsin, not exciting? ;) But I'm biased.

Also, I'm super jealous of everyone's vacation plans so far. I really want to go back to Europe for a week, but our budget is only $3k (although I could work in a little more) and H isn't on board with another long flight. I know there are cool destinations in the US and Canada, but this may be our last opportunity for a long vacation before a baby and I really want to take advantage of it. Also, H is starting a new consulting contract next week so he can't really ask for time off until he's been there for a couple months. So, our plans are TBD.
  • We're going to Vegas in April for a wedding and I really hope to go to ATL in the fall. We may end up in the Twin Cities instead, but it'll likely be one of the two. My work trip to Denver in February was cancelled, so there goes the extra stay there. Boooo! H travels a lot for work, especially in the Spring, so we're not planning anything big.
  • My H and I had such a great time in NYC in May, that we want to hit a long weekend probably in March.  Now that I know how cheap and easy it is to get there from NOLA ($200 r/t, direct flight), I want to visit more often.

I haven't done much planning yet, but I've never been to Europe and we decided this is the year.  We're planning for an early Fall trip.  I'm leaning toward Italy/Germany, but have started paying attention to package deals.  So if I see a good one, that could make a difference on our destinations.

  • Nothing super extensive set in stone yet, we just don't have the budget to do a lot of travelling.  We do plan on taking some camping trips near here/Wyoming, so we can actually use our camper.  Last summer was crazy with wedding planning, and the summer before was crazy with house building, so it'll be nice to just relax.  I'd like to try to make it to Mt Rushmore.  We also will be going out to Country Jam in Grand Junction in June, but we do that every year. It's a country music festival and we go with H's family.  I'm hoping this is our last year going... last year was a disaster because our AC in the camper broke and it was 100+ degrees every day.  And, I'd like to use 4 of my vacation days to do something quiet and relaxing, not a 4 day long drinking/partying fest.  We're too old for that.

We have tossed around the idea of Mexico or Caribbean for our one year anniversary this fall, since Southwest now flies to some destinations there.  H has hoards of SW points so flying would be free.  I'm just not sure we should be spending 3 grand on a resort right now when we could set that aside.  But, we'll see, we want to start TTCing around this time next year so it might be nice to have one last fun trip that's just us for awhile.
  • Question out of curiosity for those of you who have separate finances...

How do you handle saving for vacations together?
  • H and I are going to take a long trip in June! We're going to be trailering our boat from MD to Miami... From Miami we will take the boat over to Bimini Bahamas for a week. I absolutely cannot wait! H's mom was nice enough to give us time share points for our stay in Miami so we get 2 nights free. We're going with another couple and splitting the cost of gas, hotels, etc. Plus renting a condo with a full kitchen in the Bahamas so we can eat in some nights.

There is a possibility we'll take a big group trip in November. Last time we had a group of about 30 and we went to Punta Cana, I believe they're planning to do Mexico this year at an all inclusive resort.

And finally BIL might be getting married this fall, no set plans, but they want a destination wedding so we'll plan to go for probably 4 days if they do that.

@simplyelise H and I have separate finances and we usually just split trip costs down the middle if we go on an all inclusive trip. If we go on a non-AI trip we alternate paying for things. It usually ends up being about equal anyway. We pay for our own souvenirs and such.

How do you handle saving for vacations together?
Well, since we don't do really expensive vacations, we don't really have a separate savings for them.  For road trips etc, we take turns paying for gas, meals, etc.   They are usually cashflow items.

For trips like when we went to Vegas for a hockey game in October, H paid for flights, rental car, and game tickets.  I paid for food and gas.  We had a free place to stay (his dad owns a condo in Mesquite, about an hour from Vegas).

If we ever do any big planned trip, we'd probably split the cost... maybe not 50/50 since I make so much less than he does, but I never would want him to pay for the entire thing... I'd feel like a freeloader.
  • @smetter - I actually really like Wisconsin!  Madison is a cute city.  But I do know that we'll be spending most of our time playing cards with my grandpa.  That's ok, he's a nice guy :)

@short+sassy, let me know if you want any tips.  I haven't been to southern Germany yet, but I've been to a good bit of Italy.  I much prefer Italy over the bit of Germany that we recently saw.  People sort of forget that a lot of Germany was basically flattened by the Allies in WWII. I think the most charming stuff is probably in the south.  I think if/when we go back to Germany it will be to the southern bits around Munich, and we'll probably do a river cruise.  That would be really delightful, and many of the towns are really small and easy to see in a day.  But I could see us returning to Italy (after this next trip) before going back to Germany.  Italy is just amazing, and not going to lie....  Mediterranean weather is pretty much as good as it gets when you are used to southern heat/humidity.

Have you looked into Iceland?  Much shorter flight (like maybe 5 hrs instead of 9), and $3K would probably do it.  It's supposed to be crazy amazing.

Thanks!  I will definitely seek advice as I start making more concrete plans.  Italy just seems to be an all out favorite with both folks on this board and friends who have been.  In fact, one of my friends went to various cities in Europe when she was growing up.  But, now that she is an adult, she only visits Italy when she goes to Europe.

@hoffse Iceland has crossed my mind, but I haven't looked into it much. I'll keep it on my to-research list.

Yeah, Italy is a crowd favorite for a very good reason.  It was unified so late that each city/region is completely different from the next... but they all tend to enjoy really nice weather, and really good food.  Beautiful architecture and some cool ruins too.  The biggest problem with Italy is that the country is so long, you usually have to make some tough decisions about what to see.  I would love to spend a couple months slowly going from one end to the other, but unfortunately there is never enough time :)

Croatia is supposed to be a lot like Italy, but significantly cheaper.  Southern France reminded me of Italy too.  It's really the Mediterranean coastal areas that are so nice - I'm not sure if the country really matters, to be honest.  I would tell a first-time traveler to go to some place near the Mediterranean coast or Benelux.  Either one would fulfill your expectations/dreams of what Europe is supposed to be like.

  • We are doing a family cruise in February with my parents and my sister and her family.  Mom and Dad are paying for the cruise itself and we are paying for the flights, hotel and on board/on shore spending.  Flights were total $700, the hotel will be $250 and we should be at about $1,000 for everything else.  Not bad for a week in the Caribbean during winter!

I will most likely need to go to Orlando for a week the first of September for work.  They have a big meeting on the Disney properties, I'm not sure which hotel yet.  That is DH's birthday week so I may have him fly down the weekend before or after and spend a few days.  We can get the group rate on the room and my flights will be paid for so it shouldn't be too bad.  I really want to go to Universal for Harry Potter.

Otherwise no plans other than weekend trips to visit family when we feel like it.  I would love to plan a trip to Europe (DH's great grandfather immigrated from Croatia so that is on our list) but TTC means we can't really plan far out.

I do a trip with my mom every other year. In 2012 we did a Mediterranean cruise and in 2014 we went to Hawaii. This year, she wants to go to Boston, so we're headed there for a long Memorial Day weekend. I've been before so I know the typical sights and lay of the land, but I know there are a lot of MA locals on here (including @Xstatic3333) - so any suggestions on unique things that might be happening that weekend? Last time we were there is was St. Anthony's Feast, which was very cool! Otherwise, we don't have anything on the books right now. We've been TTC for nine months, and are hesitant to book anything international right now - which is KILLING me because we have just enough miles for two round trip tickets to Europe just sitting there!!
I'd be happy to help with Boston too!  I live outside the city.

We're hitting the big AUS destinations: Sydney, Melbourne, Ayers Rock, Great Barrier Reef and Alice Springs.  It will be 2 weeks and that is the longest I want to be away for this trip.

My aunt and I went to NZ 10+ years ago.  It was awesome.  I think AUS will be nice but I'm guessing it might not top NZ.  We did 2 weeks and saw the major cities and sights.  Back then we saw a pre-earthquake Christchurch and it was a neat, beautiful city.  So sad about the damage that was done and the tragedy.
  • We're taking a 4 night trip to NOLA in May!  I'm so excited!  We've never been, but have always wanted to go.  I'm up for any recommendations people have.  I basically just want to eat and drink :D

We're considering another 4 night trip in the summer driving through upstate NY.  I want to see my grandfather who lives up there and I'd like to do some wineries.
  • We've got a western med cruise scheduled for September.  Beyond that, I'm debating a trip to Miami to see my last remaining grandparent, but not sure if I want to go.  Kinda irritated that she can make trips to Ohio to see my uncle, cousin, and their kids, but hasn't once come up here to see us or my kid which is also her great grandson.  I also know my dad will go and just camp out at the house all week versus going out and doing stuff.

Short+Sassy is the NOLA expert, obviously.  You will love it though.  NOLA is easily in my top 3 favorite US cities.

This is touristy, but definitely do beignets for breakfast one morning.  And make sure to try some crawfish and drink a hurricane.  I personally don't like crawfish, and the way you're supposed to eat them skeezes me out, but you gotta try them at least once.  Some people love them.  Muffalettas are delicious for lunch, and obviously po' boys.

I really like Audubon park.  And this is going to sound odd, but the cemeteries are beautiful.  Some people are buried above ground there since the city is below sea level.

But mostly, I love NOLA for the shopping.  OMG the shopping is amazing.
