NMMR: Craft Projects Today

It was a dreary winter  day here and I had a friend over to do some craft projects just for the fun of it.  I bought a new Cricut and I wanted an excuse to play with it!

We made oversize Scrabble tiles, her kids made some custom tiles for their room and I just finished etching a glass I bought at the Dollar Store.

I have a mistake on the etching where there was a bubble in the stencil that I didn't catch but otherwise everything turned out pretty good!

My friend did their last name in black paint with the stained wood showing through on the letters and then their individual names branch off of these with stained wood and black paint letters.   I used my cricut to cut stencils in contact paper and vinyl for the tiles.

Tiles the kids made (2nd grade and 6th grade).

  • That's so cool! I love scrabble and would probably consider doing this for a baby's name over a crib.

It was a little more time consuming than I expected but it wasn't hard!  DH had the saw and sander.  I spent about $50 in supplies (including $15 in sandpaper and masks and $15 in different color stains) but we made about 25 tiles.  We still have wood tiles and lots of stain left.

I would love to start an Etsy shop, but I don't know if it would be worth it or not.

  • That's awesome! I'd love to do more crafting but I never know where to start.

That's a good idea. I've yet to catch the Pinterest bug (it made me feel too overwhelmed while wedding planning) but I do use it to keep track of recipes.

I have a ton of Pinterest boards, including ones for crochet projects (I don't know how to crochet yet) and quilting (I barely know how to sew a pillow case).  It is fun to browse and see what you can do if you have the time and knowledge.

I even have a board for our master suite remodel to keep track of fixtures I like, our tile selections and ideas for new bedding and closet organization.  My phone and browser has the "pin it now" feature so if I stumble on something online I can pin it to one of my boards without going to pinterest.

  • Those look great. I would love to do these for our home, I just can't justify the cost of the Cricut just yet.   ;)

  • The scrabble tiles are really cool!  I think it's the perfect kind of thing for Etsy.

Amazon recently started "Amazon Homemade" (I think that is what it is called) as a direct competitor for Etsy.  Because, you know they can't keep their fingers out of EVERY corner of the Internet, lol.  But it might be a good time to get in during the early days.

I absolutely love those Scrabble tiles!!!  Super cute.

Etsy is pretty saturated and so many items aren't even handmade anymore (mass produced junk sold cheaply).  I've read so many articles about how hard it is to get any traffic to your shop so I haven't looked into it seriously.

Amazon might work...  I'll have to look into it.

Dh does some design work (I'm not creative but I can execute ideas for crafts) and my friend who painted the tiles in the picture above also does crochet projects (adorable baby hats, blankets, etc.).  We joked this weekend that the three of us could do a joint venture when we have time.

I enjoy making the stuff but obviously it can get expensive and there are only so many places in my house I can display craft projects.  Selling some would be the perfect solution!

Ha, I didn't know Amazon was into it!

You could do them for different holidays, too.  Like L-O-V-E in red and white.  I would totally buy something like that for the mantle for Valentine's day.  :)

ha!  My DH would kill me.  We agreed to watch our spending a little more closely the next couple months - we just paid the balance for our spring trip and got new garage doors!  But I will definitely keep in mind for the future - I could see it for different holidays!
