New York: Broadway Shows--What do you recommend?

As I mentioned before, we are taking an East Coast Trip. While we are in New York City, we would like to see a Broadway show.

We are considering one of the following (in rank order):
  • Book of Mormon
  • Jersey Boys
  • Lion King
Have any of you seen these shows? Would you recommend them? If not, what show would you recommend to see on Broadway?

I have only seen Book of Mormon. I really enjoyed it but it is pretty raunchy so if you are offended easily I would skip it. One of the songs actually translates to F@*k you, God. In the context of the show, it makes sense and is funny but I know People who would have totally walked out at that point
  • If you can get tickets to Hamilton, see that, but they are nearly impossible to get. Wicked is really great too.

The Lion King is fantastic and so is Book of Mormon. BUT if you are in the slightest way, easily offended, don't see the Book of Mormon.  We were laughing our a$$es off, but there were people walking out of the show in disgust when we went to see it.

I've never seen Jersey Boys and have no desire to see it, so I can't speak for that show.

@smerka: Thanks for the response. We are not easily offended and we aren't religious, so I don't think that will be a concern. We both have a pretty crude sense of humor, so it shouldn't be a concern. Aren't the creators of South Park the same ones who wrote Book of Mormon? I could be wrong.

@emily1004: Thanks for the suggestions. We saw Wicked in London earlier this year, and it was great. We are debating between Lion King and Book of Mormon. Kind of hard to decide which one!

  • Another vote for Book of Mormon! It is truly, truly hilarious. Yes, it is by the creators of South Park, so that's the kind of humor you're dealing with, but the music is great too. I haven't seen the other two, but I've heard more enthusiastic reports from Lion King than Jersey Boys.
  • We loved Lion King!!!!!  We saw the touring show and it was just beautiful!

Book of Mormon is amazing.  We got to see it in London on the West End.

Yes, they take pot shots at everybody, and conservative/religious Christians in particular may be offended by it... but it's flipping hilarious, and there's something kind of sweet about it at the end as weird as that sounds.

It makes you squirm in your seat even more than Southpark does because you're watching it live with a bunch of strangers, and sometimes it's hard to know if the person 2 seats down is offended or not, lol.  But I think that adds to the entire experience.

It won 9 Tony's and earned every single one IMO.

Best show I have ever seen.

Oh bonus - BoM has a moment where you get a bit of Lion King as part of the show.  I won't spoil it, but it's incredibly funny :)
