I got our 6 month renewal notice from Progressive and I was somewhat annoyed that they were increasing our monthly premium by $3 again. It's not a huge amount, but I just did their snapshot discount program and even though I had a no issues, very few hard stops and drove normal hours, we got a 1% savings.

So, I called them up to ask why we didn't see much of a discount. I got the standard, "rates are increasing in your area." So I gave them the standard, "well, I might just have to look for another insurance provider." That sent off red flags to the rep and he urged me to speak to their retention department.

The representative was quite nice and I was polite to him. Within 10 minutes, he magically "found" about $65 in discounts and said if we paid our policy in full in July (we normally auto draft monthly), we would save a total of $116. I was pretty stoked. It's not a ton of money, but hey, I will take the savings!

Just goes to show, don't forget to periodically call your insurance companies and ask about any discounts or promos they are running!

  • We did that a year ago and saved a ton! We learned our lesson to never wait that long again!

I just read your blog on that.  It inspired me to look around.  I know when we switched from Progressive to our current insurance we saved a huge amount of money.

    Every little bit helps.
  • Nice! When we last did that we were told that Arbella was giving a discount if you donated to Dana Farber. Since we donate there anyways we just sent them the slip and a $25 donation saved us about $60 on our annual premium!

The annual pay was HUGE when my husband and I combined auto insurance. I couldn't stand that he paid it every month and would pass up the discount. He's since come around to my side :)
  • H was a customer of Progressive for 8 years.  We insured my car, his truck, our camper, and our utility trailer through them.  They kept doing the "rates are increasing in your area" BS, and so he researched and we ended up switching to Liberty Mutual and saved about $100 for each period (so $200/year).  We also used their snapshot thing and will be getting a 15% discount on top of that.  I know my own portion of the insurance is about $50 less for next payment than before.

So yeah, anyway, Progressive didn't try that hard to keep us around.
