old clothes

The skirt I am wearing today is 18 years old.  It is making me feel very MM (and old).  Got to love the wrap skirt style....I'm about 20lbs heavier now and can still wear it!  And I love that I bought it on a trip so it is a souvenir reminding me of that first time in Paris :)  I've probably only worn it about 3-4 times over the last 5-6 years but I guess it is worth keeping around.

Does anyone else still wear some way old clothes?

Re: old clothes

  • Nothing presentable, but H and I both still wear tshirts from high school and H still has his workout sweats from the police academy. There's nothing old in my closet that I could get away with wearing to work, but plenty of stuff we wear around the house. I love that your old skirt is a souvenir!
  • The dress I'm wearing to work today is probably about 10 years old at this point. I am with you that the wrap style is very forgiving of weight gain!

For the winter I have a pair of knee-high black leather Nine West boots that were my mom's - she bought them in 1994 and they are still going strong and look brand new! I had them resoled ONCE and polished like crazy but they are so well made and such high quality leather that I'll probably be giving them to my daughter if I ever have one.

I have some flip flops that I just saw in a picture that's from 10 years ago.  I probably wear them 2-3 times per week in the summer.  I've never resoled them or anything.  Didn't realize they were that old.

I still wear T-shirts from high school.

Since college I've only purchased 4 pairs of gym shorts, one of which has been sacrificed to painting/home improvement projects.  I wear them most weeks at the house.  They are fine.

Probably TMI, but I have some bras that are more than 10 years old, and I still wear them all the time.  I wash them on delicate and air-dry them.  They still look pretty much the same as they did 10 years ago.

  • I still have some clothes from high school, most of which are t-shirts and house-wear. But there is one dress, a wrap-style dress, that I remember wearing to my senior awards banquet (9 years ago this year). It still looks brand new and I do wear it from time to time. And somehow it looks great even through the weight gain lol.
  • I have an old coat from when I was in junior high that I now use when I'm working outside.  So yeah, that makes it about 25 yrs old or so....:(

  • Yes, I have some old clothes as well...some of them are my sisters that she gave me years ago! As long as they don't look ratty or have holes all over then I will keep wearing them! I got no shame!
  • I still wear a lot of my old clothes. My dress pants are still the original ones I bought when I started at the office 8 years ago.

I lost a ton of weight about 9-10 years ago and kept a lot of the staple items from that size. So post pregnancy, I grabbed that tub from the attic and was able to get away with wearing a lot of that stuff instead of buying new. They went right back into the tub once I was back to pre-pregnancy weight and I'll keep them for whenever I need them again.

FFC: I also have a large tote full of bras in just about any size imaginable.  Between weighing 60 pounds more than I do now, then 10 pounds less than I do now. As well as pregnancy and nursing, I think there's every size I could ever be in that darn thing.
Although it has been really nice now that I'm back down to weighing less than I did pre-pregnancy, I just went up to the attic and grabbed the tub and magically had 5 new bras that fit. :-)

I swear I'm not a hoarder. Quite the opposite actually.

  • I have a lot of old clothes that are in the "I love this so much, if I could just lose some weight and get back into it" category.  It's been over 20 years since I was in HS and college and I bet some of the stuff dates back to then.  I know I have t-shirts from HS/College, plus other tees that are sentimental because they remind me of something.  I'm actually planning to turn a lot of those into a quilt.

I might have you all beat!  When I was in college (early 90s), my mom gave me a super cute mini skirt that she wore in the late 60s/early 70s.  Totally retro, but cute retro.  I love it and used to get tons of compliments on it.  But now...let's just say it is in the previous category I mentioned (sigh).  That skirt is now almost 50 years old, lol.

I also have a Marine Corps. jacket my dad wore in Vietnam.  Same era as the skirt!  However, it doesn't look like a military jacket or have any insignias on it, other than it is olive green.  It's a great jacket for when it's cold and/or raining.  Plus, I love that it was my dad's.

  • Nope none of my HS clothes would fit me - heck even the tops I wore in my mid 20s wouldn't fit me.  Not that I'm much bigger than I was back then but weight has distributed in different places since having a kid and I much prefer a different style of clothing than I did back then - no low riding jeans or tight tops. lol……plus I'm aways purging stuff every couple years and clothes is a place I purge.  If I haven't worn in in 2 years it gets donated.

I had some older bras but just like you, took great care of them and they lasted!  Until I had kids.  Just can't fit everything in them anymore...lol

  • I think my oldest clothing items are also nice bras from Victoria's Secret that I bought during college (about 10 years ago).  I think it's just the part of me that fluctuates in size the least.

that's going to change with pregnancy - I use to wear a 34A - had so many of bras that size.  Had to get rid of them all because I'm now a 34B.  They never went totally all the way back down.

Oh yeah, I'm ready! Actually can't wait to go shopping but it feels a little too early still.
