Pictures as promised

OK, sorry for the delay y'all, but here's some pics of our new puppy, Maybelle, and our newly completed patio.  I realized I don't actually have any final photos of the yard, but these will have to do.  Not shown in the pics are the fencing we did around the dog area to keep it separate from the patio if we want (it has a gate to the patio), and the hoards of rocks we did around the patio edges and on the tree "hill".  The concrete "bridge" will eventually lead to some sod, and we will be adding some more plants, but we had to delay that because we ran out of money!  We will also be seeding the remainder of the property (the back 1/4 or so is mostly leach field for the septic) next spring. The patio is 920 sq ft, and we had a good 20 people sitting around that firepit at our party.

This was not a MM project at all as most of it was hired out (H helped with some of the manual labor stuff), but it sure turned out nice, and we resolved a lot of the grading/drainage issues we were having because they didn't do a great job of compacting the soil after building the house.  We opted for the paver patio instead of the less expensive concrete or stamped concrete because the soil here is very expansive, and concrete will just crack.  This area also gets full sun for most of the day so we didn't want the maintenance of a deck.  Since we plan to be here a long time, we wanted something that will last and be easy to repair if needed.  With the pavers, we can just pop one out if it breaks and replace it.

@julieanne912 : That looks amazing! If you don't mind, what was the general cost? DH and I want to have a similar patio/fire pit area created soon, but haven't done any initial research.

Thanks!  They really did a nice job.  I'm not sure of the exact cost as H was the one working that out with the landscaper and things were getting added/subtracted as they went, but I think we ended up in the 43-45k range for all of it, originally we were looking at around 42k.  The stone/paver work was in the 25k range by itself.  This included those dog steps and that half wall, and those were a lot of extra work because they had to custom cut each wall piece to fit between the dog door and the slider.   I think it would have been around 20 without doing the dog stuff.

Pavers are pricey because they lay each one by hand, it took a week and a half to put in because it's basically one guy doing the actual laying, with a helper or two to do the prep.  A similar size stamped/stained concrete would have been half the price.

The firepit set up was in the 3000-3500 range I think.  We had to run a gas line from the opposite side of the house, on the front of the house, all the way out there and the components for a natural gas firepit are obviously more than if you just did a wood burning one.  We also continued the gas line out further for a future outbuilding so that added into the cost too (you can see where that is, the pile of rocks in the background is covering up the stub).

    SITB!

Ha, thanks!  It's a bit over an acre.  I laugh because I used to be a city girl, my condo in Chicago was 580 sq ft (so yeah, less than my patio).  I'm in love with my dogs too :)  We have a third older basset hound too, but he doesn't get in pictures too often cause he sleeps a lot.
  • @julieanne912: If the dog steps (which are super cool) and the fire pit, weren't included, that wouldn't be too bad. Our back yard isn't nearly as large (only 4,000 sq ft), so our patio itself would only be about 500 sq ft. The pavers look awesome. DH wants to do that as well instead of stamped concrete.

  • Yeah if it's not so big then the price isn't terrible, and pavers are definitely the best choice for the CO soil.
  • Very nice!  cute dogs too :)
  • That patio is beautiful!

  • It looks great and such cute doggies!  Pavers are supposed to be better for the environment because of absorbing water and decreasing runoff.
  • That looks great.  The dogs are adorable too.  Great patio/backyard!

Thanks for the pics!  Your backyard looks amazing!  Those pavers are beautiful and that fire pit with all the seating is perfect for entertaining.

Cute pups!  I know the boxer is an "older puppy", but she is already a big girl! (edited to fix gender).

  • Looks amazing! I love the pavers you chose and your pups are so so precious! I had a basset hound for my first dog and she was seriously the best.
  • Thanks all!  Like I said, not MM at all.

And yup, our girl got spayed on Friday, she weighed in at 53 lbs, she's a big girl!  The previous owners had seen her parents and I guess her dad was big too.  It's been an adventure keeping her quiet all weekend.
  • The patio looks gorgeous! I want something like that at our house. So do the cute puppies

  • Love the pictures.......trying not to choke over the prices.  I'm sure they're fair for the work involved, but I just couldn't let go of that much all in one shot.
